Religious Mind Revisited, Part 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>In the year of King Uzziah\u2019s death<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Isaiah+6:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a> <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\">\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a>) sent the prophet Isaiah to <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+9:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">harden<\/a> the descendants of Israel living in the southern kingdom of Judah (Isaiah 6:9-12 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cGo and tell these people: \u2018Listen continually, but don\u2019t understand!\u00a0 Look continually, but don\u2019t perceive!\u2019\u00a0 Make the hearts of these people calloused; make their ears deaf and their eyes blind!\u00a0 Otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, their hearts might understand and they might repent and be healed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I replied, \u201cHow long, sovereign master?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cUntil cities are in ruins and unpopulated, and houses are uninhabited, and the land is ruined and devastated, and the Lord has sent the people off to a distant place, and the very heart of the land is completely abandoned.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The NET translation of the final verse of this chapter extending the period of this hardening through the destruction of the Old Testament religion in 70 A.D. is almost <a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/isaiah\/6-13.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unique<\/a>: <em>Even if only a tenth of the people remain in the land, it will again be destroyed, like one of the large sacred trees or an Asherah pole, when a sacred pillar on a high place is thrown down.\u00a0 That sacred pillar symbolizes the special chosen family<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Those who returned from Babylon still didn\u2019t understand the message of the Old Testament Scriptures that they <em>must all be born from above<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 They continued in their own works believing, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aapinellas.org\/other\/aa_sayings.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it works if you work it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>You have been given the opportunity to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven<\/em>, Jesus told his disciples, <em>but they have not. \u00a0For whoever has will be given more, and will have an abundance. \u00a0But whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. \u00a0For this reason I speak to them in parables: Although they see they do not see, and although they hear they do not hear nor do they understand<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus called the religious institutions created by people hardened by <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> <em>the power of darkness<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Paul\u2019s old human Saul knew this <em>power of darkness <\/em>firsthand (Acts 26:4, 5, 9-11 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now all the Jews <em>(\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03b9, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> know the way I lived from my youth, spending my life from the beginning among my own people and in Jerusalem. \u00a0They know, because they have known me from time past, if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest party of our religion, I lived as a Pharisee\u2026Of course, I myself was convinced that it was necessary to do many things hostile to the name of Jesus the Nazarene. \u00a0And that is what I did in Jerusalem: Not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons by the authority I received from the chief priests, but I also cast my vote against them when they were sentenced to death. \u00a0I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to force them to blaspheme. \u00a0Because I was so furiously enraged at them, I went to persecute them even in foreign cities.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019ll consider the story of Jesus\u2019 arrest as a measure of how calloused their hearts, how deaf their ears and how blind their eyes had become: <em>Judas obtained a squad of soldiers and some officers of the chief priests and Pharisees<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> <em>a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and experts in the law and elders<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Then Jesus, because he knew everything that was going to happen to him, came and asked them, \u201cWho are you looking for?\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus hearkened attentively to the Holy Spirit in ways that I can scarcely imagine, but He <em>knew everything that was going to happen to him<\/em> because of <em>the scriptures that say it must happen this way<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+16:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Father in heaven<\/a> <\/em>revealed to Peter that Jesus is <em>the Christ <\/em>(e.g., <em>Messiah<\/em>), <em>the Son of the living God<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But Peter was so calloused, deaf and blind he did not believe <em>the scriptures that say it must happen this way<\/em> even when Jesus told him (Matthew 16:21, 22 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. \u00a0So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him: \u201cGod forbid, Lord! \u00a0This must not happen to you!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Who are you looking for?<\/em> Jesus asked the <em>crowd armed with swords and clubs<\/em> (John 18:5, 6 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They replied, \u201cJesus the Nazarene.\u201d \u00a0He told them, \u201cI am he.\u201d (Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, was standing there with them.)\u00a0 So when Jesus said to them, \u201cI am he,\u201d they retreated and fell to the ground.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don\u2019t know if this was a miraculous manifestation of Jesus\u2019 presence or simply that He threw the arresting officers off-balance by standing there rather than running.\u00a0 He had run <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+10:39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">before<\/a>.\u00a0 Or perhaps they expected Him or his disciples to <a href=\"https:\/\/infidels.org\/library\/modern\/james_still\/jesus_trial.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resist<\/a> (John 18:7-9 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then Jesus asked them again, \u201cWho are you looking for?\u201d \u00a0And they said, \u201cJesus the Nazarene.\u201d\u00a0 Jesus replied, \u201cI told you that I am he. \u00a0If you are looking for me, let these men go.\u201d\u00a0 He said this to fulfill the word he had spoken, \u201cI have not lost a single one of those whom you gave me.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Now this is the will of the one who sent me<\/em>, Jesus said to those who had <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+6:24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pursued<\/a> Him across the lake after eating of the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+6:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">loaves and fishes<\/a> He had blessed and multiplied, <em>that I should not lose one person of every one he has given me, but raise them all up at the last day<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>When I was with them<\/em>, He had <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prayed<\/a> to his Father, <em>I kept them safe and watched over them in your name that you have given me. \u00a0Not one of them was lost except the one destined for destruction <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+27:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew 27:3-10<\/a>)<em>, so that the scripture could be fulfilled<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>When those who were around him saw what was about to happen<\/em>, the accounts of Jesus\u2019 arrest continued, <em>they said, \u201cLord, should we use our swords?\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><em>\u00a0 <\/em>They had two (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Luke+22:35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke 22:35-38<\/a>).\u00a0 The <em>crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and experts in the law and elders took hold of Jesus and arrested him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and struck the high priest\u2019s slave, cutting off his right <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote12sym\">ear<\/a>.\u00a0 (Now the slave\u2019s name was Malchus.)<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>But Jesus said, \u201cEnough of this!\u201d \u00a0And he touched the man\u2019s ear and healed him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Jesus said to Peter, \u201cPut <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/05\/pauls-ot-quotes-romans-1018-21\/#sdfootnote10sym\">your<\/a> sword back into its sheath!\u00a0 Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>For all who take hold of the sword will die by the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote8sym\">sword<\/a>.\u00a0 Or do you think that I cannot call on my Father, and that he would send me <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote9sym\">more than<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote10sym\">twelve<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote11sym\">legions<\/a> of angels right now?\u00a0 How then would the scriptures that say it must happen this way be fulfilled?\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders who had come out to get him, \u201cHave you come out with swords and clubs like you would against an outlaw?\u00a0 Day after day when I was with you in the temple courts, you did not arrest me.\u00a0 But this is your hour, and that of the power of darkness!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>But this has happened so that the scriptures would be fulfilled.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Then all the disciples left him and fled.\u00a0 A young man was following him, wearing only a linen cloth.\u00a0 They tried to arrest him, but he ran off naked, leaving his linen cloth behind<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Then the squad of soldiers with their commanding officer and the officers of the Jewish leaders arrested Jesus and tied him up.\u00a0 They brought him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.\u00a0 (Now it was Caiaphas who had advised the Jewish leaders that it was to their advantage that one man die for the people.)\u00a0 Simon Peter and another disciple followed them as they brought Jesus to Annas<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Now the ones who had arrested Jesus led him to Caiaphas, the high priest, in whose house the experts in the law and the elders had gathered.\u00a0 But Peter was following him from a distance, all the way to the high priest\u2019s courtyard<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>(Now the other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, and he went with Jesus into the high priest\u2019s courtyard.)\u00a0 But Simon Peter was left standing outside by the door.\u00a0 So the other disciple who was acquainted with the high priest came out and spoke to the slave girl who watched the door, and brought Peter inside<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>When they had made a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_cowardice\"><\/a>I\u2019ve listened to sermons where Peter\u2019s denial of Jesus was portrayed as cowardice.\u00a0 A Gospel harmony such as this highlights how Peter and all the disciples would have fought to the death at Jesus\u2019 command.\u00a0 Both Matthew and Mark record that they fled only when Jesus made it clear that He intended to be arrested, tried and executed (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+26:56\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew 26:56<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Mark+14:49\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark 14:49b, 50<\/a>) <em>so that the scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled<\/em>. \u00a0Jesus\u2019 disciples weren\u2019t cowards; they had calloused hearts, deaf ears and blind eyes for the Scriptures.\u00a0 But even as the rest fled, Peter followed Jesus at a distance (along with another, <a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/commentaries\/john\/18-15.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">possibly<\/a> John) when he was the one most guilty of a violent criminal act against the high priest.<\/p>\n<p>The unbeliever assumes that the words recorded in the Gospel narratives do not recount what actually happened during Jesus\u2019 arrest but are the <em>post hoc <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcommons.unomaha.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1708&amp;context=jrf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">literary inventions<\/a> of religious minds.\u00a0 If Jesus had actually said and done these things during his arrest, they reason, the response and outcome would have been different.\u00a0 At very least the arresting officers would have returned empty-handed saying, <em>\u201cNo one ever spoke like this man!\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_ftn26\"><sup>[26]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The believer can use that hypothetical person who would have, or should have, responded differently to Jesus\u2019 teaching and actions as a baseline to derive a relative measurement of <em>the power of darkness<\/em>, the effects of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> hardening (John 7:47-52 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then the Pharisees answered, \u201cYou haven\u2019t been deceived too, have you? \u00a0None of the rulers or the Pharisees have believed in him, have they? \u00a0But this rabble who do not know the law are accursed!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before and who was one of the rulers, said, \u201cOur law doesn\u2019t condemn a man unless it first hears from him and learns what he is <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+3:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doing<\/a> <em>(\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b5\u1fd6, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>, does it?\u201d \u00a0They replied, \u201cYou aren\u2019t from Galilee too, are you? \u00a0Investigate carefully and you will see that no prophet comes from Galilee <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+4:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew 4:12-16<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Isaiah+9:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah 9<\/a>)<\/em>!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the religious milieu where Saul <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+1:13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thrived<\/a> and out of which the apostle Paul was <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Acts+9:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a>. \u00a0This nearly eight hundred years of calloused hearts, deaf ears and blind eyes, <em>hardening<\/em> in a word, provides the historical and cultural contexts for his <em>religious mind<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The table I constructed to harmonize the Gospel narratives follows.\u00a0 Some of the temporal arrangements are admittedly arguable.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"4\" width=\"638\">\n<p priests and Pharisees.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"160\">Then [a <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+26:47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">large crowd<\/a> armed arrested Jesus led him to Caiaphas, the high priest, in whose house the experts in the law and the elders had gathered.\u00a0 But Peter was following him from a distance, all the way to the high
