name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> <em>departed from Athens and went to Corinth<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Luke didn\u2019t write much about Paul\u2019s 18 months<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> in Corinth, I assume because Paul wrote so much in 1 and 2 Corinthians (and one other letter<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> Luke may have known about).\u00a0 But I have to admit I would have appreciated a bit more of Luke\u2019s objective eye to balance Paul\u2019s more introspective look.\u00a0 The most important thing Luke recorded however was the Lord Jesus\u2019 encouragement to comfort Paul\u2019s fear (Acts 18:9, 10 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Lord said to Paul by a vision in the night, \u201cDo not be afraid <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/fo.html#fobou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/fo.html#fobew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>), <\/em>but speak <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/la.html#lalei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bb\u1f71\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/la.html#lalew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>and do not be silent <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/si.html#siwphshs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03b9\u03c9\u03c0\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/si.html#siwpaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03b9\u03c9\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>), <\/em>because I am with <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#meta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac<\/a>) <\/em>you, and no one will assault <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epiq.html#epiqhsetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epit.html#epitiqhmi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>you to harm <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kak.html#kakwsai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kak.html#kakow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>you, because I have<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>many people in this city.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Before attempting to discover why Paul was afraid to speak\u00a0in Corinth, I want to review Jesus\u2019 instructions to <em>his twelve disciples<\/em> when He <em>gave them authority over unclean spirits so they could cast them out and heal every kind of disease and sickness<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I am sending you out like sheep surrounded by wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. \u00a0Beware of people, because they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues. \u00a0And you will be brought before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them and the Gentiles. \u00a0Whenever they hand you over for trial, do not worry about how to speak <em>(\u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u1f75\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/em><em>, another form of \u00a0\u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> or what to say, for what you should say<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> (\u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u1f75\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5, another form \u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> will be given to you at that time. \u00a0For it is not you speaking <em>(\u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/em><em>, another form of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9),<\/em> but the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/holy-spirit\/\">Spirit<\/a> of your Father speaking <em>(\u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd<\/em><em>, another form of \u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> through you.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_drug\"><\/a>Luke recorded a story about the apostles (including Peter, the others were not named) after they were beaten for disobeying the Jewish ruling council by continuing to preach in Jesus\u2019 name:\u00a0 <em>So they left the council rejoicing <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#cairontes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c7\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#cairw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c7\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>) <em>because they had been considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is exactly how Jesus told them to behave: <em>Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> <em>about you falsely on account of me<\/em>. \u00a0<em>Rejoice <\/em>(\u03c7\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03c7\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03c9)<em> and be glad<\/em>\u2026<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul was more than a little familiar with these phenomena, both people handing him over to councils to be flogged, and the Holy Spirit giving him the words to speak when needed.\u00a0 Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into prison in Philippi.\u00a0 <em>About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the rest of the prisoners were listening to them<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The account of the end of Paul\u2019s stay in Pisidian Antioch is as follows (Acts 13:50-52 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But the Jews incited the God-fearing <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/13\/the-jerusalem-council\/#sdfootnote1sym\">women<\/a> of high social standing and the prominent men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/13\/the-jerusalem-council\/#sdfootnote2sym\">Barnabas<\/a>, and threw them out of their region <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/13\/the-jerusalem-council\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0So after they shook the dust off their<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>feet in protest against them, they went to Iconium. \u00a0And<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the disciples were filled <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epl.html#eplhrounto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/plh.html#plhrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>with joy <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#caras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#cara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac<\/a>) <\/em>and with the Holy Spirit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_originate\"><\/a>Apparently the relatively new believers in Pisidian Antioch also shared in this counter-intuitive joy.\u00a0 If I hear <em>Rejoice<\/em>\u00a0<em>and be glad <\/em>as a rule for me to obey when I am being mistreated by others, well, the stated reason\u2014<em>because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a>\u2014is scant help. \u00a0My rejoicing and gladness of heart under those circumstances are either AWOL or so tepid they are rarely convincing, even to me.\u00a0 But if I hear this by faith, as a promise, then I realize that \u03c7\u03b1\u03af\u03c1\u03c9 doesn\u2019t originate with me, but wells up from the \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac (<em>joy<\/em>) that is an aspect of the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fruit of the Holy Spirit<\/a>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If I consider Paul\u2019s fear from a law perspective I see that every time he opened his mouth to speak people ridiculed or beat or stoned him.\u00a0 And, admittedly, part of the Lord\u2019s comfort to Paul in Corinth was the promise that, <em>no one will assault you to harm you<\/em>. But if I think about it from a faith perspective, well, the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/12\/16\/my-reasons-and-my-reason-part-1\/\">apparent masochism<\/a> of the early apostles and disciples makes perfect sense.\u00a0 Not only were their bloodstreams flooded with endorphins and adrenaline when their bodies were stressed, their spirits were filled with the \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u00a0of the Lord.\u00a0 A feedback loop like that could easily become addicting, and even progressive, encouraging them to risk new dangers and greater challenges.<\/p>\n<p>If I think of Paul as fairly far along in this addictive feedback loop, initiated and perpetuated by speaking, I look somewhere other than the feedback loop itself for something that would cause him to be afraid to speak.\u00a0 More mistreatment simply resulted in more endorphins, more adrenaline and more \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac.\u00a0 I need something that would disturb or distort that feedback loop, cause Paul to doubt himself or the Spirit of Christ in him.\u00a0 For better or worse I\u2019ve latched onto the nature of some of the Lord\u2019s people in Corinth as potentially troubling to the former Pharisee and self-proclaimed <em>least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Some of them were <em>sexually immoral <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#pornoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#pornos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<em>, idolaters, adulterers, passive homosexual partners, practicing homosexuals, thieves, the greedy, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/22\/what-is-sexual-immorality\/#sdfootnote3sym\">drunkards<\/a>, the verbally abusive, and swindlers<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a> and some of them apparently had some difficulty shedding those sins.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_prejudice\"><\/a>Having said all that, I do believe that something about the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/17\/paul-in-athens\/\">people of Athens<\/a> negatively impacted Paul even before he arrived in Corinth.\u00a0 <em>I decided<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ekr.html#ekrina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f14\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd\u03b1<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krinw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>to be concerned<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> <em>about nothing among<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a> <em>you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul judged, even prejudged or was prejudiced against, the Corinthians before he spoke to them.\u00a0 By his own admission his focus on <em>nothing\u2026except Jesus Christ, and him crucified<\/em> denied the Corinthians wisdom:\u00a0 <em>Now we do speak wisdom among the mature<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a>\u2026<em>not with words taught us by human wisdom, but with those taught by the Spirit,<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> <em>explaining spiritual things to spiritual people<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>I<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0<em>could not speak to you as spiritual people, but instead as people of the flesh,<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0<em>as infants in Christ<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote27sym\" name=\"sdfootnote27anc\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Obviously, by the time I heard of any of this in 1 Corinthians Paul was already doing everything he could to correct that deficit, writing 1 Corinthians, sending Timothy to <em>remind<\/em> [them]<em> of<\/em> <em>my<\/em> <em>ways in Christ<\/em>, <em>as I teach them everywhere in every church<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote28sym\" name=\"sdfootnote28anc\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And he did this even as he clung to his initial judgment regarding their unworthiness: <em>I fed you milk,<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote29sym\" name=\"sdfootnote29anc\"><sup>29<\/sup><\/a> <em>not solid food, for you were not yet ready.<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote30sym\" name=\"sdfootnote30anc\"><sup>30<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em> In fact, you are still not<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote31sym\" name=\"sdfootnote31anc\"><sup>31<\/sup><\/a> <em>ready<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote32sym\" name=\"sdfootnote32anc\"><sup>32<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But when I compare Romans to 1 Corinthians it seems all too apparent that the wisdom Paul withheld is the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+10:17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cause<\/a> of spiritual maturity, not a reward for achieving it somehow by one\u2019s own efforts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addendum:<\/strong> April 6, 2020<br \/>\nTables
