This very day<\/em>, ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a> <\/em>(\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a>) said to Moses, I will begin to fill all the people of the earth with dread and to terrify<\/em> them when they hear about you.\u00a0 They will shiver and shake in anticipation of your approach<\/em>.[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This very day<\/em> was past as Moses recounted Israel\u2019s history, the not-so-distant past, after all the military men had been eliminated<\/a> from the community<\/em>.[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Hebrew word translated and to terrify <\/em>was yir\u02bc\u00e2h<\/a> <\/em>(\u05d5\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05ea\u05da), the word I had hoped would distinguish the fear of the Lord<\/em> from ordinary fear<\/em>.\u00a0 It was off to a good start.<\/p>\n

When Abimelech confronted Abraham for misleading him whether Sarah was his wife, Abraham said, \u201cBecause I thought, \u2018Surely no one fears<\/em> (yir\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05ea) God <\/em>(\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/a><\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd) in this place.\u2019\u201d<\/em>[3]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Abraham assumed that those who did not fear God<\/em> would kill him to take his beautiful wife and those who fear God<\/em> would not.\u00a0 But he had completely misjudged Abimelech, who feared God<\/em> very much (Genesis 20:2-7 NET):<\/p>\n

Abraham said about his wife Sarah, \u201cShe is my sister.\u201d \u00a0So Abimelech, king of Gerar, sent for Sarah and took her. \u00a0But God (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> appeared to Abimelech in a dream at night and said to him, \u201cYou are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken, for she is someone else\u2019s wife [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u201d \u00a0Now Abimelech had not gone near her. \u00a0He said, \u201cLord (<\/em>\u02bc\u0103d\u00f4n\u00e2y<\/a>, \u05d0\u05d3\u05e0\u05d9)<\/em>, would you really slaughter an innocent nation? \u00a0Did Abraham not say to me, \u2018She is my sister\u2019? \u00a0And she herself said, \u2018He is my brother.\u2019 \u00a0I have done this with a clear conscience and with innocent hands!\u201d<\/p>\n

Then in the dream God (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d4\u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> replied to him, \u201cYes, I know that you have done this with a clear conscience. \u00a0That is why I have kept you from sinning against me and why I did not allow you to touch her. \u00a0But now give back the man\u2019s wife. \u00a0Indeed he is a prophet and he will pray for you; thus you will live. \u00a0But if you don\u2019t give her back, know that you will surely die along with all who belong to you.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next morning when Abimelech told his servants about the dream they were terrified<\/em> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/a><\/em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05d5 + me<\/sup>\u02bc\u00f4d<\/a><\/em>).[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Abimelech\u2019s yir\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em> was no mere emotion but resulted in concrete acts (Genesis 20:14-18 NET):<\/p>\n

So Abimelech gave sheep, cattle, and male and female servants to Abraham. \u00a0He also gave his wife Sarah back to him [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Then Abimelech said, \u201cLook, my land is before you; live wherever you please [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

To Sarah he said, \u201cLook, I have given a thousand pieces of silver to your \u2018brother.\u2019 \u00a0This is compensation for you so that you will stand vindicated before all who are with you [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, as well as his wife and female slaves so that they were able to have children. \u00a0For the Lord (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> had caused infertility to strike every woman in the household of Abimelech because he took Sarah, Abraham\u2019s wife.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If this were the only mention of yir\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em>\u00a0I would say that fearing God<\/em> is the answer, no need for Jesus to die. \u00a0So long as people fear God<\/em> and He intercedes with a threatening dream and ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> inflicts limited reversible bodily harm the kingdom of God can last forever as a police state.\u00a0 But I\u2019m probably extrapolating too far. \u00a0Realistically, this fear and threatening dream and reversible bodily harm prevented one adultery.\u00a0 That is a long way from universal righteousness.<\/p>\n

God <\/em>(\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd) spoke all these words: \u201cI, the Lord<\/em> (ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4), am your God<\/em> (\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05da), who brought you from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery <\/em>[Table<\/a>].[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 After ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> spoke the ten commandments, Moses said to the people, \u201cDo not fear<\/em> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05ea\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05d5), for God has come to test you, that the fear<\/em> (yir\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05ea\u05d5) of him may be before you so that you do not sin.\u201d<\/em>[6]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The commandments begin (Exodus 20:3-6 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cYou shall have no other gods (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> before me [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water below [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the Lord (<\/em>ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em>, your God (<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05da)<\/em>, am a jealous God (<\/em>\u02bc\u00eal<\/a>, \u05d0\u05dc)<\/em>, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, and showing covenant faithfulness to a thousand generations of those who love (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2hab<\/a>, \u05dc\u05d0\u05d4\u05d1\u05d9)<\/em> me and keep my commandments [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The first occurrence of \u02bc\u00e2hab<\/em> in the Bible was Abraham\u2019s love <\/em>(\u05d0\u05d4\u05d1\u05ea; Genesis 22:2<\/a>) for Sarah\u2019s son Isaac.\u00a0 Isaac loved <\/em>(\u05d5\u05d9\u05d0\u05d4\u05d1\u05d4; Genesis 24:67<\/a>) Rebekah and (\u05d5\u05d9\u05d0\u05d4\u05d1; Genesis 25:28<\/a>) Esau his son while Rebekah loved <\/em>(\u05d0\u05d4\u05d1\u05ea) his brother Jacob.\u00a0 Isaac also had a love <\/em>(\u05d0\u05d4\u05d1\u05ea\u05d9; Genesis 27:4<\/a> \u2013 \u05d0\u05d4\u05d1; Genesis 27:9<\/a> \u2013 \u05d0\u05d4\u05d1; Genesis 27:14<\/a>) for tasty food.\u00a0 Jacob had fallen in love<\/em> (\u05d5\u05d9\u05d0\u05d4\u05d1; Genesis 29:18<\/a>) with Rachel.\u00a0 Working for her father for seven years to acquire her seemed like only a few days to him because his love<\/em> (\u05d1\u05d0\u05d4\u05d1\u05ea\u05d5; Genesis 29:20<\/a>) for her was so great<\/em>.\u00a0 Jacob loved <\/em>(\u05d5\u05d9\u05d0\u05d4\u05d1; Genesis 29:30<\/a>) Rachel more than Leah<\/em>. \u00a0After she gave birth to Reuben, Leah thought surely <\/em>Jacob will love<\/em> (\u05d9\u05d0\u05d4\u05d1\u05e0\u05d9; Genesis 29:32<\/a>) me now<\/em>, but he loved <\/em>(\u05d0\u05d4\u05d1; Genesis 37:3<\/a>) Joseph<\/em>, Rachel\u2019s firstborn, more than all his sons<\/em>.\u00a0 When Joseph\u2019s brothers saw that their father loved<\/em> (\u02bc\u00e2hab<\/em>, \u05d0\u05d4\u05d1) him more than any of them, they hated Joseph and were not able to speak to him kindly<\/em>.[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 They got rid of Joseph but acknowledged to him years later (though they didn\u2019t recognize him yet) their father\u2019s love for his younger brother Benjamin (Genesis 44:20 NET):<\/p>\n

We have an aged father, and there is a young boy who was born when our father was old.\u00a0 The boy\u2019s brother is dead.\u00a0 He is the only one of his mother\u2019s sons left, and his father loves (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2hab, \u05d0\u05d4\u05d1\u05d5)<\/em> him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Introduced here in the ten commandments just as the forty-day limit<\/a> of the yir\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em> of God to restrain sin was about to be made evident, the partiality of Jacob\u2019s \u02bc\u00e2hab<\/em>, his love for a favorite wife and favorite sons, would have been a step in the right direction if his descendants had loved ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> as their favorite God and kept his commandments.\u00a0 If you love me<\/em>, Jesus told his disciples, you will obey my commandments<\/em>.[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I spent too much of my life trying to obey his commandments to prove that I loved Him.\u00a0 But here I want to contrast this statement to his former statement in the ten commandments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Under law<\/a> love me<\/em> and keep my commandments<\/em> are joined by the conjunction and<\/em> (Greek: \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a>), two different things on my to-do list. \u00a0Under grace<\/a> you will obey my commandments<\/em> is a promise predicated on if you love me<\/em>.\u00a0 The difference is the meaning of love<\/em>, not the difference of the meaning of \u02bc\u00e2hab<\/em> in Hebrew and \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a> in Greek.\u00a0 Both \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd and \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c4\u03b5 above are forms of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9.[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0But \u02bc\u00e2hab<\/em> (translated \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd) was used to describe the partial love[11]<\/sup><\/a> of human beings before it occurred in the ten commandments, while \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c4\u03b5 was used to describe God\u2019s love, the fruit of his Spirit[12]<\/sup><\/a> which is patient, kind, not envious, does not brag, is not puffed up or rude, not self-serving, easily angered or resentful, not glad about injustice, but rejoices in the truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things and never ends.[13]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I didn\u2019t appreciate this difference either the first time I read John\u2019s Gospel narrative.<\/p>\n

<\/a>The word keep <\/em>above is a translation of the Hebrew word sh\u00e2mar<\/a> <\/em>(\u05d5\u05dc\u05e9\u05de\u05e8\u05d9).\u00a0 It was translated \u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd (a form of \u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>) in Greek in the Septuagint.\u00a0 And \u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd was translated do<\/em>\u2026obey <\/em>in the NET: For those who are circumcised do not obey<\/em> (\u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9) the law themselves, but they want you to be circumcised so that they can boast about your flesh<\/em>.[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is not a particularly common translation<\/a>, more often\u00a0translated\u00a0keep <\/em>in English.\u00a0 The NET translators chose obey <\/em>for forms of \u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9 any time it made any sense at all.<\/p>\n

Jesus, for instance, didn\u2019t pray that He had obeyed (\u1f10\u03c6\u03cd\u03bb\u03b1\u03be\u03b1, another form of \u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9) his disciples, but that He had watched over them<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 A strong man, fully armed <\/em>does not keep his possessions safe when he obeys (\u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u1fc3, another form of \u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9) his own palace, but when he guards<\/a> <\/em>it.\u00a0 Apart from the obvious exceptions, however, I have no particular objection to translating \u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9 obey<\/em>.\u00a0 <\/a>Translating forms of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> obey <\/em>is a bit more problematic: If you love me, you will obey<\/em> (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5, a form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) my commandments<\/em>.[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Again there are obvious counter examples: Jesus did not obey (\u1f10\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03bf\u03c5\u03bd, another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) his disciples, He kept them safe<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 Mary did not obey (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ae\u03c3\u1fc3, another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) three quarters of a pound of expensive aromatic oil from pure nard<\/em>,[16]<\/sup><\/a> She has kept it for the day of my burial<\/em>,[17]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus said. \u00a0But there are a few other examples that were not translated obey<\/em> for no apparent reason except to protect (or, obey) the sensibilities of late 20th century pre-tribulation rapture-believing Protestants, to keep them in the fold, so to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Both you have obeyed<\/em> and you have kept<\/em> are translations of the same Greek word \u1f10\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2 (another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9).\u00a0 I\u2019ll ignore for the moment that both of these statements were addressed to the singular<\/a> angel of the church in Philadelphia<\/em>[18]<\/sup><\/a> and deal with them as I had commonly assumed. \u00a0(I’m also assuming that the NET translators wanted to translate \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9 obey <\/em>as often as possible.) \u00a0The clause you have obeyed my word <\/em>is possible if I take Jesus\u2019 word <\/em>to be his answer to the question\u2014What must we do to accomplish the deeds God requires?<\/em>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014This is the deed God requires \u2013 to believe in the one whom he sent<\/em>.[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Even when I believed that faith originated from me rather than an aspect of the fruit of his Spirit, I was more or less comfortable thinking of my faith as my obedience.<\/p>\n

There is little more frightening<\/a> to one who does not know the power and presence of the Holy Spirit than an admonition <\/em>(\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>; translated word<\/a> <\/em>above) to endure steadfastly<\/em>.\u00a0 \u201cYou have obeyed my word to endure steadfastly\u201d (in my own strength and faithfulness) would have seemed a little too steep a price to escape the great tribulation.\u00a0 Because you have kept my admonition to endure steadfastly <\/em>is not that different, really, but it would have felt a little less works oriented to me when I did not yet know the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n

I may have balked at hearing Jesus say, if you want to enter into life<\/em>, obey<\/a> (\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd, another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) the commandments<\/em>.\u00a0 Or if John had written, by this we know that we have come to know God: if we <\/em>obey<\/a> (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) his commandments<\/em>. \u00a0And, whatever we ask we receive from him, because we<\/em> obey<\/a> (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) his commandments and do the things that are pleasing to him<\/em>.\u00a0 Or, the person who<\/em> obeys<\/a> (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1ff6\u03bd, another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) his commandments resides in God, and God in him<\/em>.\u00a0 For this is the love of God: that we<\/em> obey<\/a> (\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) his commandments<\/em>.\u00a0 Of course, the NET translators did translate \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2 (another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9) so as to define saints <\/em>as those who obey<\/a> God\u2019s commandments and hold to their faith in Jesus<\/em>.[21]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>On the Christian & Missionary Alliance webpage entitled \u201cSanctification\u201d [This link is no longer active. See Addendum<\/a>] I read an amazing confession that \u201cmost Christians do not understand or experience\u2026the fullness of the Holy Spirit in their lives.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to hit this too hard since I imagine[22]<\/sup><\/a> that other Christian religions experience a similar phenomenon whether they confess it or not.\u00a0 In one sense I\u2019m gratified that my problem is shared by over half of Christians.\u00a0 Two causes were cited: 1) we \u201chave been badly taught,\u201d or 2) we \u201chave chosen to disregard the clear teaching of the New Testament<\/em> regarding sanctification.\u201d \u00a0That diagnosis, however, lights a clear path to a prescription<\/a>: better teaching on the passages of Scripture that explain that we \u201ccan\u2019t make ourselves holy any more than we can make ourselves saved\u201d and that \u201cChrist is our Sanctifier in the same way that He is our Savior.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a>While I\u2019m not opposed generally to translating \u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9 or \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9 obey<\/em>, to also translate \u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a> obey <\/em>causes me to wonder.\u00a0 <\/a>One of the reasons I enjoy the NET translation is that it feels like the translators and I grew up in the same socially constructed reality<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the same religious milieu.\u00a0 What was the impetus to translate all three words obey<\/em>?\u00a0 Were they pushed by that same impatient just do it<\/a> <\/em>attitude I encountered<\/a> when I tried to discuss my early hesitant and tentative ideas about what the New Testament, Paul in particular, taught about righteousness? \u00a0Paul and the Holy Spirit were careful to distinguish Old Testament guarding and keeping from New Testament hearing with faith<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I heard a pastor recently (a Baptist not C&MA) say, \u201cThe Holy Spirit doesn\u2019t stop me from sinning, just convicts me when I do.\u201d \u00a0I gave him the benefit of the doubt at the time that he didn\u2019t mean exactly what he had said.\u00a0 His preaching style is so haphazard and stream-of-consciousness it might have meant anything:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
