Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Paul wrote to the believers in Rome before he had been there to see them (Romans 1:13-17 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I often intended to come to you (and was prevented until now), so that I may have some fruit even among you, just as I already have among the rest of the Gentiles. \u00a0I am a debtor both to the Greeks and to the barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. \u00a0Thus I am eager also to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome.\u00a0 For I am not ashamed of the gospel,<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>for it is God\u2019s power <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/du.html#dunamis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>for salvation to Greek. \u00a0For the righteousness <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>) <\/em>of God is revealed <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apoka.html#apokaluptetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f7b\u03c0\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em>, just as it is written, \u201c<strong><em>The righteous <\/em><\/strong><em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em><strong><em> by faith <\/em><\/strong><em>(\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em> <strong><em>will live<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul listed two reasons why he was not ashamed of the Gospel.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" between the Septuagint and the Greek text used to translate the NET is the single word \u03bc\u03bf\u1fe6.\u00a0 In other words the Septuagint was even clearer in the sense that it read <em>my faith<\/em> (or <em>faithfulness<\/em>), as spoken by God: \u201cThe righteous by my faithfulness will live.\u201d\u00a0 The contemporary Hebrew translation of Habakkuk 2:4 in the NET reads: <em>the person of integrity will live because of his faithfulness<\/em>.\u00a0 Not surprisingly that sounds like one who by his own effort keeps the law.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_undo\"><\/a>As I begin to contrast Romans and 1 Corinthians I\u2019m not suggesting that Paul was ashamed of the Gospel in Corinth.\u00a0 On the contrary he clearly stated one of the reasons he was not ashamed of the Gospel when he wrote to the Corinthians: <em>the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power<\/em> (\u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b9\u03c2) <em>of God<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I must contrast these two letters to overcome my own bias that Romans is the Gospel in theory and 1 Corinthians is the Gospel in practice; or, even worse, that Romans is the sales pitch and 1 Corinthians is what happens if one is foolish enough to take the sales pitch seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Even as I began to hear, even as I began to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/02\/jedidiah-part-2\/\">want to hear<\/a>, Romans as crazy, hopeful things\u2014alarming-could-they-possibly-be-true-I\u2019ve-never-heard-anything-like-these-things-in-my-life things\u2014after I finished reading Romans I turned to 1 Corinthians.\u00a0 Whatever I thought I learned in Romans was largely undone there.\u00a0 However hopeful I became reading Romans, 1 Corinthians sobered me up and encouraged me to maintain my faith in my efforts to keep the law, even after <em>the law<\/em> became <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/02\/jedidiah-part-2\/\">my paraphrase<\/a> of Paul\u2019s definition of God\u2019s love.\u00a0 The discovery that Paul\u2019s letter to the Romans was probably written after 1 Corinthians was a watershed moment for me.<\/p>\n<p>So, while Paul stated one of the reasons he was not ashamed of the Gospel in 1 Corinthians, I want to examine it in its context (1 Corinthians 1:18-25 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For the message <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>about the cross is foolishness <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mw.html#mwria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <\/em>to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/du.html#dunamis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> of God. \u00a0For it is rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <\/em><strong><em>of the wise <\/em><\/strong><em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>), <strong>and I will thwart the cleverness <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sunes.html#sunesin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sunes.html#sunesis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <strong><em>of the intelligent <\/em><\/strong><em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sunet.html#sunetwn\" law? \u00a0Where is the debater <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/suz.html#suzhthths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03b6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u1f74\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>of this age?\u00a0 Has God not made the wisdom <em>(\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> of the<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>world foolish <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/emw.html#emwranen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bc\u1f7d\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mw.html#mwrainw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u1fb3<\/a>)<\/em> of God the world by its wisdom <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuontas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> by the foolishness <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mw.html#mwrias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> of preaching <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kh.html#khrugmatos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b7\u03c1\u1f7b\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and Greeks ask for wisdom <em>(\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03af\u03b1)<\/em>, but we preach <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kh.html#khrussomen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b7\u03c1\u1f7b\u03c3\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kh.html#khrussw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b7\u03c1\u03cd\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>about a crucified Christ, a stumbling block <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sk.html#skandalon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03ba\u03ac\u03bd\u03b4\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) <\/em>to Jews and foolishness <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mw.html#mwrian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> to Gentiles.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u00a0But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/du.html#dunamin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03b9\u03c2)<\/em> of God and the wisdom <em>(\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> of God. \u00a0For the foolishness <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mw.html#mwron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mw.html#mwros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>of God is wiser <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofwteron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f7d\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofwteros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03ce\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>stronger than human strength.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_shaken\"><\/a>There is a defensiveness here that seems entirely unnecessary, particularly calling the proclamation of the Gospel <em>the foolishness of preaching<\/em>.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sunes.html#sunesin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>\u00a0(a form of \u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2), the <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sunet.html#sunetwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>\u00a0(a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2), the <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/suz.html#suzhthths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03b6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u1f74\u03c2<\/a>\u00a0(a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03b6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2) lead my thoughts back to Athens, and persuade me that his address before the Areopagus meant more to Paul than Luke\u2019s flippant comment<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> about the Athenians would suggest.\u00a0 At a minimum 1 Corinthians was written two years after that event, yet the tension of that confrontation in Paul\u2019s writing is as fresh as if it just happened.\u00a0 None of this is to say that I think anything above is untrue, just that that truth is presented defensively.<\/p>\n<p>Saul was no slouch intellectually.\u00a0 Add the mind of Christ to that and Paul was formidable beyond reckoning as a \u03c3\u03c5\u03b6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u1f74\u03c2\u00a0(<em>debater<\/em>).\u00a0 There was never any reason for him to feel defensive around those with a philosophical bent to their minds, unless his own confidence was shaken somehow.\u00a0 It leads me to suspect that though Paul continued faithfully, though he went through the motions, at this particular moment he didn\u2019t have a fully satisfying handle on things.\u00a0 Consider by way of comparison the confidence that emanates from the similar opening of Romans.<\/p>\n<p><em>I am a debtor<\/em> (<a
