Deuteronomy, Part 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Get up, make your way across Wadi Arnon<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> Moses\u2019 account of the words <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\">y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a><\/em> (\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) spoke to him <em>after all the military men had been eliminated from the community<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> continued.\u00a0 <em>Look!\u00a0 I have already delivered over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land.\u00a0 Go ahead!\u00a0 Take it!\u00a0 Engage him in war! \u00a0This very day I will begin to fill all the people of the earth with dread and to terrify them when they hear about you. \u00a0They will shiver and shake in anticipation of your approach<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Hebrew word translated <em>and to terrify<\/em> was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yir\u02bc\u00e2h\">yir\u02bc\u00e2h<\/a><\/em> (\u05d5\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05ea\u05da), the word I\u2019d hoped would distinguish <em>the fear of the Lord<\/em> from ordinary <em>fear<\/em>.\u00a0 In English <em>to fill all the people of the earth with dread and to terrify them<\/em>, causes me to wonder if I should simply accept that <em>yir\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em>, similar to the fruit of the Spirit, comes from God, like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metrolyrics.com\/amazing-grace-lyrics-gospel.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">song<\/a> says: \u201c&#8217;twas Grace that taught, my heart to fear.\u00a0 And grace, my fears relieved.\u201d\u00a0 The Hebrew word translated <em>to fill<\/em> was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_n\u00e2than\">n\u00e2than<\/a> <\/em>(\u05ea\u05ea).\u00a0 It was also translated <em>I have already delivered<\/em> (\u05e0\u05ea\u05ea\u05d9) in <em>I have already delivered over to you Sihon the Amorite<\/em>, and <em>is giving<\/em> (\u05e0\u05ea\u05df) in <em>the land the Lord our God is giving us<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Hebrew word translated <em>engage <\/em>in <em>Engage him in war<\/em> was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_g\u00e2r\u00e2h\">g\u00e2r\u00e2h<\/a> <\/em>(\u05d5\u05d4\u05ea\u05d2\u05e8), to\u00a0<em>grate<\/em>, to\u00a0<em>anger<\/em>, <em>to cause strife<\/em>, <em>stir up<\/em>, <em>contend<\/em>, <em>meddle<\/em>.\u00a0 Moses\u2019 tactic was to send messengers with an offer of peace.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Numbers 21:21, 22 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Deuteronomy 2:26-29 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">Then Israel sent messengers to King Sihon of the Amorites, saying, \u201cLet us pass through your land; we will not turn aside into the fields or into the vineyards, nor will we drink water from any well, but we will go along the King\u2019s Highway until we pass your borders.\u201d<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">Then I sent messengers from the Kedemoth Desert to King Sihon of Heshbon with an offer of peace:\u00a0 \u201cLet me pass through your land; I will keep strictly to the roadway.\u00a0 I will not turn aside to the right or the left.\u00a0 Sell me food for cash so that I can eat and sell me water to drink.\u00a0 Just allow me to go through on foot, just as the descendants of Esau who live at Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land the Lord our God is giving us.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>I admit to wondering whether Moses\u2019 tactic betrayed his unfaithfulness toward <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, or duplicity toward King Sihon.\u00a0 Either way it didn\u2019t alter the outcome.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">Numbers 21:23a (NET)<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Deuteronomy 2:30, 31 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">But Sihon did not permit Israel to pass through his border\u2026<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">But King Sihon of Heshbon was unwilling to allow us to pass near him\u2026<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">\u2026because the Lord our God had made him obstinate and stubborn so that he might deliver him over to you this very day.\u00a0 The Lord said to me, \u201cLook! \u00a0I have already begun to give over Sihon and his land to you. \u00a0Start right now to take his land as your possession.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">\u2026he gathered all his forces together and went out against Israel into the wilderness.<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a id=\"_hardened\"><\/a>It didn\u2019t matter <em>because the Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>our God<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym\">\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/a><\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05da) <em>had made him obstinate<\/em>, literally, <em>hardened his spirit<\/em>.\u00a0 The Hebrew word for <em>hardened <\/em>was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_q\u00e2sh\u00e2h\">q\u00e2sh\u00e2h<\/a> <\/em>(\u05d4\u05e7\u05e9\u05d4), translated <a href=\"http:\/\/studybible.info\/LXX_WH\/Deuteronomy%202:30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u1f75\u03c1\u03c5\u03bd\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cd\u03bd\u03c9\">\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cd\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/deu\/2\/30\/t_bibles_155030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 He also had made Sihon <em>stubborn<\/em>, literally, <em>made his heart obstinate<\/em>.\u00a0 The Hebrew word for <em>obstinate <\/em>was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u00e2mats\">\u02bc\u00e2mats<\/a><\/em> (\u05d5\u05d0\u05de\u05e5), <em>to be strong, alert, courageous, brave, stout, bold<\/em>.\u00a0 It was translated \u00a0\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f77\u03c3\u03c7\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03c7\u03cd\u03c9\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03c7\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) in the Septuagint.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Look!\u00a0 I have already begun to give over Sihon and his land to you<\/em>, <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>reiterated.\u00a0 <em>Start right now to take his land as your possession<\/em>.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">Numbers 21:23b, 24a (NET)<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Deuteronomy 2:32-35 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">When he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel.<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">When Sihon and all his troops emerged to encounter us in battle at Jahaz\u2026<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">But the Israelites defeated him in battle\u2026<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">\u2026the Lord our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, along with his sons and everyone else.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">At that time we seized all his cities and put every one of them under divine judgment, including even the women and children; we left no survivors.\u00a0 We kept only the livestock and plunder from the cities for ourselves.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>We call this <em>genocide <\/em>and fault <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>for commanding it (or assume that He did not).\u00a0 I won\u2019t mount an elaborate defense here except to say that this is how <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+4:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">law works<\/a> to <em>purge out wickedness <\/em>(Deuteronomy 21:18-21 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If a person has a stubborn, rebellious son who pays no attention to his father or mother, and they discipline him to no avail, his father and mother must seize him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his city. \u00a0They must declare to the elders of his city, \u201cOur son is stubborn and rebellious and pays no attention to what we say \u2013 he is a glutton and drunkard.\u201d \u00a0Then all the men of his city must stone him to death. \u00a0In this way you will purge out wickedness from among you, and all Israel will hear about it and be afraid <em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc\">y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/a><em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05d5)<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So that was then; this is now (Matthew 5:38-48 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou have heard that it was said, \u2018<strong><em>An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth<\/em><\/strong>.\u2019 \u00a0But I say to you, do not resist the evildoer. \u00a0But whoever <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/11\/jedidiah-part-5\/#sdfootnote8sym\">strikes you on<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/11\/jedidiah-part-5\/#sdfootnote9sym\">the<\/a> right cheek, turn the other to him as well <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/11\/jedidiah-part-5\/#_Table15\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0And if someone wants to sue you and to take your tunic, give him your coat also. \u00a0And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/11\/jedidiah-part-5\/#sdfootnote12sym\">Give<\/a> to the one who asks you, and do not reject the one who wants <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/11\/jedidiah-part-5\/#sdfootnote13sym\">to borrow<\/a> from you <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/11\/jedidiah-part-5\/#_Table16\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have heard that it was said, \u2018<strong><em>Love your neighbor<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 and \u2018hate your enemy.\u2019 \u00a0But I say to you, love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be like your Father in heaven, since he causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. \u00a0For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? \u00a0Even the tax collectors do the same, don\u2019t they? \u00a0And if you only greet your brothers, what more do you do? \u00a0Even the Gentiles do the same, don\u2019t they? \u00a0So then, be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fankly, in our natural selves we care little more for the latter than the former commandment.\u00a0 We <em>are like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to one another, \u201cWe played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; we wailed in mourning, yet you did not weep.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But before we call <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>cruel or Jesus na\u00efve, we who want to follow Him would do well to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-4\/\">deny<\/a> ourselves.\u00a0 When we do we may notice that <em>the Israelites defeated<\/em> [Sihon] <em>in battle<\/em> because <em>the <\/em><em>Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>our God<\/em> (<em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5) <em>delivered him over to<\/em> [them]:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Numbers 21:24b-26a, 31, 32 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Deuteronomy 2:36, 37 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">\u2026and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strongly defended.<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">From Aroer, which is at the edge of Wadi Arnon (it is the city in the wadi), all the way to Gilead there was not a town able to resist us \u2013 the Lord our God gave them all to us.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">So Israel took all these cities; and Israel settled in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages.\u00a0 For Heshbon was the city of King Sihon of the Amorites\u2026<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">So the Israelites lived in the land of the Amorites. \u00a0Moses sent spies to reconnoiter Jaazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">However, you did not approach the land of the Ammonites, the Wadi Jabbok, the cities of the hill country, or any place else forbidden by the Lord our God.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In other words, here Israel obeyed <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, killing only those who were <em>under divine judgment<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_ch\u00e2ram\">ch\u00e2ram<\/a><\/em>, \u05d5\u05e0\u05d7\u05e8\u05dd) and taking only the land that was promised.\u00a0 The law reads: <em>Whoever sacrifices to a god other than the Lord <\/em>(<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05dc\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>alone must be utterly destroyed<\/em> (<em>ch\u00e2ram<\/em>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Nevertheless no devoted<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>offering<\/em>\u00a0(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_ch\u00earem\">ch\u00earem<\/a><\/em>, \u05d7\u05e8\u05dd) <em>that a man may devote<\/em> (<em>ch\u00e2ram<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d7\u05e8\u05dd) <em>to the<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Lord<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>(<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05dc\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>of all that he has,<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>both<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>man and beast, or the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed; every devoted<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>offering is<\/em>\u00a0(<em>ch\u00earem<\/em>, \u05d7\u05e8\u05dd) <em>most holy to the<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Lord <\/em>(<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05dc\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<em>. <strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>No person under the ban<\/em> (<em>ch\u00earem<\/em>, \u05d7\u05e8\u05dd), <em>who may become doomed to destruction<\/em> (<em>ch\u00e2ram<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d7\u05e8\u05dd) <em>among men, shall be redeemed,<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>but<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>shall surely be put to death<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If we stop blaspheming <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>for a moment, thinking He has no right to make such laws, we can begin\u2014using the very laws I quoted above\u2014to grasp what He meant when He spoke through the prophet Ezekiel.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">Ezekiel 20:11 (NASB)<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">Ezekiel 20:25 (NASB)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">I gave them My statutes and informed them of My ordinances, by which, if a man observes them, he will live.<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">I also gave them statutes that were not good and ordinances by which they could not live\u2026<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>We aren\u2019t told how many parents, if any, brought their drunken rebellious sons before the elders of the city that they might be stoned to death.\u00a0 I can surmise that some parents remained silent or lied about them, while others with means bribed elders to redeem them.\u00a0 It\u2019s fairly clear that many a drunken rebellious son rose to become an elder who led the people of Israel into <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a> (Ezekiel 20:28, 30 NASB):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When I had brought them into the land which I swore to give to them, then they saw every high hill and every leafy tree, and they offered there their sacrifices and there they presented the provocation of their offering.\u00a0 There also they made their soothing aroma and there they poured out their drink offerings\u2026Therefore, say to the house of Israel, \u2018Thus says the Lord God, \u201cWill you defile yourselves after the manner of your fathers and play the harlot<em> (<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_z\u00e2n\u00e2h\">z\u00e2n\u00e2h<\/a><em>, \u05d6\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/eze\/20\/30\/t_bibles_822030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"http:\/\/studybible.info\/LXX_WH\/Ezekiel%2020:30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03ba\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f10\u03ba\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9\">\u1f10\u03ba\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> after their detestable things?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul wrote about the law in ways quite similar to <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>words through Ezekiel.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">Romans 7:10b (NET)<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"319\">Galatians 3:21b (NET)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">So I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life brought death!<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">For if a law had been given that was able to give life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>I wrote about this <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/29\/who-am-i-part-4\/#_law\">elsewhere<\/a>. \u00a0Here I want to skip ahead to begin to explore what life was like for Israel under law as the sharp tip of the sword of divine judgment, and to present an example of <em>yir\u02bc\u00e2h <\/em>which resulted in fear and faith in <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>.\u00a0 Outside Jericho just before the rams\u2019 horns sounded and the city\u2019s wall collapsed, Joshua gave the army of Israel the following command (Joshua 6:17-19 NET):<a id=\"_command\"><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The city and all that is in it must be set apart <em>(<\/em>ch\u00earem<em>, \u05d7\u05e8\u05dd)<\/em> for the Lord, except for Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house, because she hid the spies we sent. \u00a0But be careful when you are setting <em>(<\/em>ch\u00e2ram<em>, \u05ea\u05d7\u05e8\u05d9\u05de\u05d5)<\/em> apart the riches <em>(<\/em>ch\u00earem<em>, \u05d4\u05d7\u05e8\u05dd)<\/em> for the Lord. \u00a0If you take any <em>(<\/em>ch\u00earem<em>, \u05d4\u05d7\u05e8\u05dd)<\/em> of it, you will make the Israelite camp subject to annihilation <em>(<\/em>ch\u00earem<em>, \u05dc\u05d7\u05e8\u05dd)<\/em> and cause a disaster. \u00a0All the silver and gold, as well as bronze and iron items, belong to the Lord. \u00a0They must go into the Lord\u2019s treasury.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I looked to see if <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>commanded this.\u00a0 So far all I\u2019ve found was Moses\u2019 command: <em>You must burn the images of their gods, but do not covet the silver and gold that covers them so much that you take it for yourself and thus become ensnared by it; for it is abhorrent to the Lord your God.\u00a0 You must not bring any abhorrent thing into your house and thereby become an object of divine wrath along with it. \u00a0You must absolutely detest and abhor it <\/em>(<em>ch\u00earem<\/em>, \u05d7\u05e8\u05dd), <em>for it is an object of divine wrath<\/em> (<em>ch\u00earem<\/em>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 A few <a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/commentaries\/joshua\/6-19.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">commentators<\/a> considered Jericho a kind of first fruits offering to <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_Rahab\"><\/a>The exception made for <em>Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house<\/em> is interesting.\u00a0 The somewhat crass tit-for-tat cited above\u2014<em>because she hid the spies we sent<\/em>\u2014doesn\u2019t quite tell the whole story (Joshua 2:1-7 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Joshua son of Nun sent two spies out from Shittim secretly and instructed them: \u201cFind out what you can about the land, especially Jericho.\u201d \u00a0They stopped at the house of a prostitute <em>(<\/em>z\u00e2n\u00e2h<em>, \u05d6\u05d5\u05e0\u05d4; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/jos\/2\/1\/t_bibles_189001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"http:\/\/studybible.info\/LXX_WH\/Joshua%202:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03b7\">\u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em> named Rahab and spent the night there. \u00a0The king of Jericho received this report: \u201cNote well! \u00a0Israelite men have come here tonight to spy on the land.\u201d \u00a0So the king of Jericho sent this order to Rahab: \u201cTurn over the men who came to you \u2013 the ones who came to your house \u2013 for they have come to spy on the whole land!\u201d \u00a0But the woman hid the two men and replied, \u201cYes, these men were clients of mine, but I didn\u2019t know where they came from. \u00a0When it was time to shut the city gate for the night, the men left. \u00a0I don\u2019t know where they were heading. \u00a0Chase after them quickly, for you have time to catch them!\u201d \u00a0(Now she had taken them up to the roof and had hidden them in the stalks of flax she had spread out on the roof.) \u00a0Meanwhile the king\u2019s men tried to find them on the road to the Jordan River near the fords. \u00a0The city gate was shut as soon as they set out in pursuit of them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What she did is exactly as Joshua reported.\u00a0 As James asked rhetorically, <em>was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another way?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0But I think her reasons, why she defied her king to do what she did, are far more interesting in this study of <em>yir\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em> (Joshua 2:8-13 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now before the spies went to sleep, Rahab went up to the roof. \u00a0She said to the men, \u201cI know the Lord <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> is handing this land over to you. \u00a0We are absolutely terrified <em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u00eaym\u00e2h\">\u02bc\u00eaym\u00e2h<\/a><em>, \u05d0\u05d9\u05de\u05ea\u05db\u05dd)<\/em> of you, and all who live in the land are cringing <em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_m\u00fbg\">m\u00fbg<\/a><em>, \u05e0\u05de\u05d2\u05d5)<\/em> before you. \u00a0For we heard how the Lord <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you left Egypt and how you annihilated the two Amorite kings, Sihon and Og, on the other side of the Jordan. \u00a0When we heard the news we lost our courage <em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_m\u00e2sas\">m\u00e2sas<\/a><em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05de\u05e1)<\/em> and no one could even breathe for fear of you. \u00a0For the Lord <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> your God <em>(<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05db\u05dd)<\/em> is God <em>(<\/em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd)<\/em> in heaven above and on earth below! \u00a0So now, promise me this with an oath sworn in the Lord\u2019s <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05d1\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> name. \u00a0Because I have shown allegiance <em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_ch\u00eas\u00ead\">ch\u00eas\u00ead<\/a><em>, \u05d7\u05e1\u05d3; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/jos\/2\/12\/t_bibles_189012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, literally, mercy)<\/em> to you, show allegiance <em>(<\/em>ch\u00eas\u00ead<em>, \u05d7\u05e1\u05d3; Septuagint: \u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03bf\u03c2, literally, mercy)<\/em> to my family. \u00a0Give me a solemn pledge \u00a0that you will spare the lives of my father, mother, brothers, sisters, and all who belong to them, and rescue us from death.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Though Rahab didn\u2019t use all of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/23\/fear-deuteronomy-part-2\/#_words\">Moses\u2019 words<\/a>, given her testimony\u2014<em>the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below<\/em>\u2014and her plea for mercy, I feel confident thinking that she <em>feared<\/em>\u00a0(<em>y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05d5)\u00a0<em>the Lord, and <\/em>[she]<em> believed<\/em>\u00a0(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u00e2man\">\u02bc\u00e2man<\/a><\/em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05d0\u05de\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5)\u00a0<em>in the Lord<\/em><em>.<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a><em>\u00a0 <\/em>She was as saved as anyone in Israel: <em>Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, her father\u2019s family, and all who belonged to her. \u00a0She lives in Israel to this very day because she hid the messengers Joshua sent to spy on Jericho<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As the writer of Hebrews declared: <em>By faith Rahab the prostitute escaped the destruction of the disobedient, because she welcomed the spies in peace<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Everyone else: Israel <em>annihilated <\/em>(<em>ch\u00e2ram<\/em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05d7\u05e8\u05d9\u05de\u05d5) <em>with the sword everything that breathed in the city, including men and women, young and old, as well as cattle, sheep, and donkeys<\/em>\u2026<em>they burned the city and all that was in it, except for the silver, gold, and bronze and iron items they put in the treasury of the Lord\u2019s house<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>But the Israelites disobeyed the command about the city\u2019s riches. \u00a0Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, stole some of the riches<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/13\/fear-deuteronomy-part-5\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I\u2019ll continue this in another essay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/21\/fear-deuteronomy-part-6\/\"><em>Fear &#8211;
