Religious Mind Revisited, Part 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My gift is <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/12\/13\/romans-part-49\/\">showing mercy<\/a>.\u00a0 Also, I&#8217;m an outsider in many ways.\u00a0 I was <em>persona non grata<\/em> when I returned to my childhood church, ostensibly because my wife divorced me, but the impossibility of repentance after apostasy (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Hebrews+6:4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hebrews 6:4-6<\/a>) is an ever-present potential refutation of my existence.\u00a0 Rather than feeling marginalized these days I perceive that I am right where I should be at the epidermal interface of the body of Christ and the world.\u00a0 I see more people flowing out of the body than in presently.\u00a0 Admittedly, that limited perspective may be a measure of my own ineffectiveness as a witness rather than a measure of problems in the churches from which people have fled.<\/p>\n<p>Given my bias toward mercy I want to consider what I called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/\">Paul\u2019s religious mind<\/a>\u201d through the lens of Jesus\u2019 teaching: <em>If your brother <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote3sym\">sins<\/a>, go <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote4sym\">and<\/a> show him his fault <\/em>(\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03b3\u03be\u03bf\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c7\u03c9\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) <em>when the two of you are alone<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul had every right to bring <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Leviticus+20:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leviticus 20:11<\/a> to the attention of the man in Corinth who had his <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Corinthians+5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">father\u2019s wife<\/a>.\u00a0 (This <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/11\/18\/sexual-immorality-revisited-part-2\/#_levitical\">study<\/a> has given me the confidence to write that.)\u00a0 The primary purpose of such confrontation was clearly stated: <em>If he listens<\/em> (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f7b\u03c3\u1fc3, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9\">\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>to you, you have regained<\/em> (\u1f10\u03ba\u1f73\u03c1\u03b4\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03b4\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9\">\u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03b4\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>your brother<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was not a <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Joshua+6:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slash<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Joshua+7:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">burn<\/a> purging of <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Deuteronomy+21:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wickedness<\/a>.\u00a0 Paul concurred: <em>Preach the message<\/em>, he wrote Timothy, <em>be ready whether it is convenient or not, reprove <\/em>(\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03b3\u03be\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c7\u03c9), <em>rebuke, exhort with complete patience and instruction<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This straightforward approach, however, was severely hampered since Paul, Silas and Timothy <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/13\/the-jerusalem-council\/#sdfootnote43sym\">passed on<\/a> the decrees that had been decided on by the apostles and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/13\/the-jerusalem-council\/#sdfootnote44sym\">elders<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/13\/the-jerusalem-council\/#sdfootnote45sym\">Jerusalem<\/a> for the Gentile believers to obey<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>For it seemed best to the Holy <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/13\/the-jerusalem-council\/#sdfootnote33sym\">Spirit<\/a> and to us<\/em>, the council had written,<em> not to place any greater burden on you than these necessary rules: that you abstain from meat that has been sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what has been <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/13\/the-jerusalem-council\/#sdfootnote34sym\">strangled<\/a> and from sexual immorality<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>)<em>. \u00a0If you keep yourselves from doing these things, you will do well<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think Paul wrote about the law\u2014<em>through the law comes the knowledge of sin<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014in his letter to the Romans to correct the erroneous impression fostered by the Jerusalem Council that <em>everything is lawful<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Obviously, not everyone agrees.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Justin_Lee_(activist)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Lee<\/a> wrote in the essay titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaychristian.net\/justins_view.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin\u2019s View<\/a>\u201d under the heading \u201cNot Under a New Law\u201d: \u201cPaul makes it perfectly clear that we as Christians are not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/03\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">under the law<\/a> \u2014 Old Testament or New Testament. \u00a0He&#8217;s not trying to remove one law only to put us under another one; he&#8217;s trying to show us that in Christ, we are <em>free <\/em>from the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll assume that the man who had his father\u2019s wife was an elder, rebellious, an idle talker, deceiver or someone <em>with Jewish connections<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> and ignore the fact that Paul did not <em>go and show him his fault <\/em>privately.\u00a0 So I\u2019m skipping\u2014<em>But if he does not listen, take one or two others with you, so that<\/em> <strong><em>at the testimony of two or three witnesses every matter may be established<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014assuming that members of <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Corinthians+1:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chloe\u2019s household<\/a> may have done this already.\u00a0 And I am going straight to, <em>If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Paul instructed Timothy: <em>Those <\/em>[elders] <em>guilty of sin must be rebuked<\/em> (\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03b3\u03c7\u03b5, another form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c7\u03c9) <em>before all, as a warning to the rest<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>For there are many rebellious people<\/em>, he wrote Titus, <em>idle talkers, and deceivers, especially those with Jewish connections<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a> <em>who must be silenced because they mislead whole families by teaching for dishonest gain what ought not to be taught. \u00a0A certain one of them, in fact, one of their own prophets, said, \u201cCretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.\u201d \u00a0Such testimony is true. \u00a0For this reason rebuke <\/em>(\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03b3\u03c7\u03b5, another form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c7\u03c9) <em>them sharply that they may be healthy in the faith<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Greek word translated <em>sharply <\/em>was <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u03cc\u03bc\u03c9\u03c2\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u1f79\u03bc\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>.\u00a0 It was necessary to add \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u1f79\u03bc\u03c9\u03c2 to \u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03b3\u03c7\u03b5 to achieve this effect because ordinarily \u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03b3\u03be\u03bf\u03bd (another form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c7\u03c9) was to be done <em>with complete patience and instruction<\/em>.\u00a0 Paul wrote his second letter to the Corinthians <em>while absent, so that when I arrive I may not have to deal harshly<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u1f79\u03bc\u03c9\u03c2) <em>with you<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>All those I love<\/em>, Jesus said, <em>I rebuke<\/em> (\u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c7\u03c9) <em>and discipline<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a> (e.g., <em>with complete patience and instruction<\/em>). \u00a0<em>And when he comes<\/em>, Jesus promised, <em>he <\/em>[the Advocate] <em>will prove the world wrong <\/em>(\u1f10\u03bb\u1f73\u03b3\u03be\u03b5\u03b9, another form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c7\u03c9) <em>concerning sin and righteousness and judgment<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I would like to function in harmony with the Holy Spirit rather than at cross purposes.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know Justin Lee or any more about him than has been revealed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaychristian.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gay Christian<\/a> website, but this study compels me to consider why I am patient with him.\u00a0 Whether I do it myself or not, should I desire that he be <em>rebuked before all<\/em>? \u00a0He is a leader.\u00a0 He has used his insights into Scripture to gather a group of followers.\u00a0 I\u2019ve already acknowledged that more people leave the body of Christ than join or re-enter in my immediate vicinity.<\/p>\n<p>The only person I know who has ever taken my insights seriously died of a brain tumor when we were thirty-six-years-old.\u00a0 He was my biggest fan and encouraged me to write down what he and I discussed together.\u00a0 I refused at that time.\u00a0 Young and still full of delusions of grandeur I said, \u201cThe last thing the world needs is another Protestant sect.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t recall if I said it or not at the time, but I feel for Martin Luther.\u00a0 Can you imagine being Martin Luther, standing before Jesus? \u00a0He looks you in the face and says, \u201cLutherans? Really?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_streamline\"><\/a>After I wrote this I went to work for nine days.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t think much more about this essay, so I read Luther\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iclnet.org\/pub\/resources\/text\/wittenberg\/luther\/gal\/web\/gal-inx.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians<\/a>\u201d in my down time.\u00a0 Though I\u2019ve heard and read <em>about <\/em>Martin Luther all my life I\u2019d never actually read any of his writings.\u00a0 I still haven\u2019t.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t read his commentary in Latin but an abridged translation by Theodore Graebner who only consented to write it if he were \u201cpermitted to make Luther talk American, &#8216;streamline&#8217; him, so to speak&#8211;because you will never get people, whether in or outside the Lutheran Church, actually to read Luther unless we make him talk as he would talk today to Americans.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So what I\u2019ve read may actually be more useful to my understanding than unadulterated Luther since it was considered by it\u2019s author (translator, abridger) and publisher to be popular marketable Luther, published four years before I was born.<\/p>\n<p>Justin Lee under the heading \u201cProoftext #4: The Abomination (Leviticus 18-20)\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaychristian.net\/justins_view.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>: \u201cI&#8217;ve heard people quote Leviticus to forbid homosexuality and tattoos, but other than that, people generally don&#8217;t turn to Leviticus for moral guidance.\u201d\u00a0 Luther\/Graebner wrote: <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Either we are not justified by Christ, or we are not justified by the Law. The fact is, we are justified by Christ. Hence, we are not justified by the Law. If we observe the Law in order to be justified, or after having been justified by Christ, we think we must further be justified by the Law, we convert Christ into a legislator and a minister of sin.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If we are discussing justification Mr. Lee has unflagging support from Luther\/Graebner:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Now the true Gospel has it that we are justified by faith alone, without the deeds of the Law. The false gospel has it that we are justified by faith, but not without the deeds of the Law. The false apostles preached a conditional gospel\u2026The true Gospel declares that good works are the embellishment of faith, but that faith itself is the gift and work of God in our hearts. Faith is able to justify, because it apprehends Christ, the Redeemer&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Human reason can think only in terms of the Law. It mumbles: &#8220;This I have done, this I have not done.&#8221; But faith looks to Jesus Christ, the Son of God, given into death for the sins of the whole world. To turn one&#8217;s eyes away from Jesus means to turn them to the Law.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>True faith lays hold of Christ and leans on Him alone.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_absolution\"><\/a>Martin Luther\u2019s perhaps unfortunate<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a> saying\u2014<em>faith alone<\/em>\u2014clearly means \u201cfaith in Christ alone.\u201d\u00a0 As <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Snowden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edward Snowden<\/a> did to the clandestine services Martin Luther blew the whistle on the inner workings of the monastery: \u201cIn their writings [the hypocrites] play up the merits of man, as can readily be seen from the following form of absolution used among the monks,\u201d Luther\/Graebner wrote:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;God forgive thee, brother. The merit of the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of the blessed Saint Mary, always a virgin, and of all the saints; the merit of thy order, the strictness of thy religion, the humility of thy profession, the contrition of thy heart, the good works thou hast done and shalt do for the love of our Lord Jesus Christ, be available unto thee for the remission of thy sins, the increase of thy worth and grace, and the reward of everlasting life. Amen.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Faced with this who among us wouldn\u2019t say, \u201cNo, justification is by faith alone\u201d?\u00a0 Yet the intent of even so blatant a denial of Christ was to assuage the inner guilt of unbelieving hearts, something Luther knew intimately:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The person who can rightly divide Law and Gospel has reason to thank God. He is a true theologian. I must confess that in times of temptation I do not always know how to do it. To divide Law and Gospel means to place the Gospel in heaven, and to keep the Law on earth; to call the righteousness of the Gospel heavenly, and the righteousness of the Law earthly; to put as much difference between the righteousness of the Gospel and that of the Law, as there is difference between day and night. If it is a question of faith or conscience, ignore the Law entirely. If it is a question of works, then lift high the lantern of works and the righteousness of the Law. If your conscience is oppressed with a sense of sin, talk to your conscience. Say: &#8220;You are now groveling in the dirt. You are now a laboring ass. Go ahead, and carry your burden. But why don&#8217;t you mount up to heaven? There the Law cannot follow you!&#8221; Leave the ass burdened with laws behind in the valley. But your conscience, let it ascend with Isaac into the mountain.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In civil life obedience to the law is severely required. In civil life Gospel, conscience, grace, remission of sins, Christ Himself, do not count, but only Moses with the lawbooks. If we bear in mind this distinction, neither Gospel nor Law shall trespass upon each other. The moment Law and sin cross into heaven, i.e., your conscience, kick them out. On the other hand, when grace wanders unto the earth, i.e., into the body, tell grace: &#8220;You have no business to be around the dreg and dung of this bodily life. You belong in heaven.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure I could endorse so severe a distinction between \u201cfaith or conscience\u201d and \u201ccivil life,\u201d so strict a separation of church and state as this.\u00a0 But I get the concept that a weak conscience is extremely offended by God\u2019s law.\u00a0 So in that sense I would say a harsh criticism of Mr. Lee is unwarranted if justification is the issue.\u00a0 A homosexual is justified by faith in Christ just as a man prone to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/11\/28\/fear-deuteronomy-part-1\/#_outburst\">outbursts of anger<\/a> is justified by faith in Christ. \u00a0I\u2019m keying here on the phrase <em>will not inherit the kingdom of God<\/em>, href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03bc\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03bc\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) and \u1f00\u03c1\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03ba\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaychristian.net\/justins_view.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">argued<\/a> under the heading \u201cProoftext #3: The Sinful \u2018Arsenokoitai\u2019 (1 Cor. 6:9, 1 Tim. 1:10)\u201d: \u201cThe most likely explanation is that Paul is referring to a practice that was fairly common in the Greek culture of his day \u2014 married men who had sex with male youths on the side<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u2026many scholars believe that \u2018malakoi\u2019 and \u2018arsenokoitai\u2019 are meant to be taken together, so that the malakoi are the young men who service the arsenokoitai.\u201d \u00a0In my opinion his arguments should be accepted or refuted on their own merits without questioning Mr. Lee\u2019s justification by faith in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 I don\u2019t intend to argue any of that here.\u00a0 I\u2019ve already stated my belief that, <em>You must not have sexual intercourse with a male as one has sexual intercourse with a woman<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/03\/06\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a> still functions as <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+3:20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">knowledge of sin<\/a>.\u00a0 I believe that the civility of that argument is of far more importance spiritually than its outcome.<\/p>\n<p>As long as people who share my belief impugn the justification of people who believe as Mr. Lee believes, more homosexuals will be called to faith (which is not necessarily a bad thing).\u00a0 Consider what Paul understood about God\u2019s calling (1 Corinthians 1:26-31 NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/31\/jephthah\/#_Table2\">Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Think about the circumstances of your call, brothers and sisters. \u00a0Not many were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were born to a privileged position. \u00a0But God chose what the world thinks foolish to shame the wise, and God chose what the world thinks weak to shame the strong. \u00a0God chose what is low and despised in the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/31\/jephthah\/#sdfootnote11sym\">world<\/a>, what is regarded as nothing, to set aside what is regarded as something, so that no one can boast in <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/31\/jephthah\/#sdfootnote12sym\">his<\/a> presence. \u00a0He is the reason you have a relationship with Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, \u201c<strong><em>Let the one who boasts<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>boast in the Lord<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_pride\"><\/a>What concerns me here is what if we are right?\u00a0 What if, by constantly harassing and forcing them to defend their justification, we do not give homosexual believers the space and liberty to hear from the Holy Spirit?\u00a0 I take Martin Luther as my point of departure.\u00a0 On his website <a href=\"http:\/\/shamelesspopery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shameless Popery<\/a> under the heading \u201c2. Less Catholic, Less Christian,\u201d Joe Heschmeyer <a href=\"http:\/\/shamelesspopery.com\/the-dark-side-of-martin-luther\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When Catholics point out that several of Luther\u2019s early writings sound pretty Catholic, the standard Protestant response (and a quite reasonable one, I might add), is that Luther wasn\u2019t completely reformed yet. Even after he went into schism, he spent another quarter-century slowly divesting himself of his Catholic beliefs.
