I want to consider \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> as used by Paul in Romans and 1 Corinthians.\u00a0 The wrath of God<\/em>\u2026revealed from heaven against all ungodliness<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c3\u1f73\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) and unrighteousness of people<\/em>1<\/sup><\/a> was revealed in three stages:<\/p>\n

1) God gave them over (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f73\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) in the desires of their hearts to impurity.<\/p>\n

2) God gave them over (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f73\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) to dishonorable passions.<\/p>\n

3) God gave them over (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f73\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) to a depraved mind.<\/p>\n

This usage of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9 is virtually identical to that of Paul encouraging the Corinthians to turn over the man who had his father\u2019s wife to Satan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
When you gather together in the name of our Lord Jesus<\/a>, and I am with you in spirit, along with the power of our Lord Jesus<\/a>, turn this man over (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Therefore God gave them over (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f73\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) in the desires of their hearts to impurity\u2026<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve already indicated<\/a> that Paul\u2019s reaction to this man seems disproportionate when compared with his reaction to the sin he addressed in his letter to the Galatians.\u00a0 But if I accept Paul\u2019s second explanation in 2 Corinthians as the more appropriate<\/a>, then Paul was not reacting to this man\u2019s sin as much as he was responding to the Corinthians\u2019 reactions to it (2 Corinthians 2:9-11; 7:11, 12 NET):<\/p>\n

For this reason also I wrote you: to test (\u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03b9\u03bc\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u03ba\u03b9\u03bc\u03ae<\/a>) <\/em>you to see if you are obedient (\u1f51\u03c0\u1f75\u03ba\u03bf\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03ae\u03ba\u03bf\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>in everything. \u00a0If you forgive<\/a> (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>anyone for anything, I also forgive him \u2013 for indeed what<\/a> I have forgiven (\u03ba\u03b5\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9)<\/em> (if I have forgiven [\u03ba\u03b5\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9]<\/em> anything) I did so for you in the presence of Christ [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, so that we may not be exploited by Satan (for we are not ignorant of his schemes)\u2026
\nFor see what this very thing, this sadness<\/a> [e.g., caused by Paul\u2019s original letter, cf. 2 Corinthians 7:8 (NET)<\/a>]<\/em> as God intended, has produced (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b3\u1f71\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>in you: what eagerness, what defense of yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what deep concern, what<\/a> punishment!\u00a0 In<\/a> everything you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. \u00a0So then, even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of<\/a> the one who did wrong (\u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u1f75\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>), <\/em>or on account of<\/a> the one who was wronged (\u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b7\u03b8\u1f73\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em>, but<\/a> to reveal to you your eagerness on our behalf before God [Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And Paul questioned their reaction right from the beginning: And you are proud!\u00a0 Shouldn\u2019t you have been deeply sorrowful instead and removed<\/a> the one who did<\/a> this from among you?<\/em>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <\/em>In my opinion, yes, they should have been sorrowful, but whether they should have removed him from their midst or not is open to question by Paul\u2019s own subsequent writings.<\/p>\n

And knowing that Paul passed on<\/a><\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b5\u03b4\u1f77\u03b4\u03bf\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) the decrees that had been decided on by the apostles and elders<\/a> in Jerusalem<\/a> for the Gentile believers to obey<\/em>3<\/sup><\/a> as he traveled on his second missionary journey, I have an even better idea why he called the man\u2019s sin \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>.\u00a0 If I examine the list of James\u2019 abbreviated version of the law\u2014abstain from meat that has been sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what has been strangled<\/a> and from<\/em>\u00a0\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>\u00a0(a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1)4<\/sup><\/a>\u2014it was the only thing left to Paul that even came close to describing the man\u2019s sin.<\/p>\n

<\/a>All of this is based on my assumption that the man Paul encouraged the Corinthians to forgive in 2 Corinthians 2:5-8 was the same man he told them to turn over to Satan in 1 Corinthians 5:4, 5.\u00a0 It is not the only assumption I could make.\u00a0 I might take Paul\u2019s phrase, the destruction of the flesh<\/em>, literally and assume that the man died, or that he simply left, or that he moved on to the Baptist church down the street.5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I know that Paul wrote a letter to the Corinthians before 1 Corinthians, I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral<\/em>\u00a0(\u03c0\u1f79\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03cc\u03c1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) people<\/em>.6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The unspecified man in 2 Corinthians could be some other sinner Paul had the church shun in any number of unknown letters he wrote between 1 and 2 Corinthians.<\/p>\n

For me it all comes down to my account (\u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Assuming the man is one and the same is an honest mistake (if that\u2019s what it proves to be) that I can live with.\u00a0 But if I stand before the Lord with all kinds of imaginary excuses\u2014the first man died, left the church, moved on to the Baptist church down the street, and the second man was introduced in an imaginary letter I don\u2019t have access to\u2014all He has to say is, \u201cWhat does it say, Dan?\u201d and I have no \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd\u00a0to offer Him.\u00a0 I can honestly say that I thought Paul was talking about the same man in both letters.\u00a0 The Lord already knows better than anyone how bright I\u2019m not.\u00a0 I would like, by his grace, to keep the willful ignorance to a minimum from here on out.<\/p>\n

After people were given over (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f73\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) in the desires of their hearts to impurity, to dishonorable passions, and to a depraved mind by God, the rest of the occurrences of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9 in Romans form a mini-Gospel lesson.\u00a0 [Jesus] was given over<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b5\u03b4\u1f79\u03b8\u03b7, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) because of our transgressions and was raised for the sake of our justification<\/em> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u1f77\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03af\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>).8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The word is used in a\u00a0similar way in 1 Corinthians, If<\/em>9<\/sup><\/a> I give away everything I own, and if I give over<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u1ff6, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) my body in order to boast<\/em>,10<\/sup><\/a> but do not have love, I receive no benefit<\/em>.11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The next step of the mini-Gospel lesson is, But thanks be to God that though you were slaves to sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching you were entrusted to<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b5\u03b4\u1f79\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9), and having been freed from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness<\/em>.12<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0There is a similar reference to a message that was passed on and a similar theme in 1 Corinthians: For I passed on<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f73\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b1, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) to you as of first importance what I also received \u2013 that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures<\/em>\u202613<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Another usage in 1 Corinthians corroborated this idea of a message that was passed on<\/em> and introduced the related word \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03b4\u03bf\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> which is that message.\u00a0 I praise you<\/em>14<\/sup><\/a> because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u1f79\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03b4\u03bf\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2) just as I passed them on<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f73\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b1, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) to you<\/em>.15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And another usage of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9 is both the idea of a message passed on<\/em> and Jesus given over<\/em> or given up<\/em>.\u00a0 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f73\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b1, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night in which he was betrayed<\/em>16<\/sup><\/a> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b5\u03b4\u1f77\u03b4\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) took bread<\/em>\u202617<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

In Romans the mini-Gospel lesson continued: Indeed, he who did not spare his own Son, but<\/a> gave him up <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f73\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) for us all \u2013 how will he not also, along with him, freely give us all things?<\/em>18<\/sup><\/a> And I suppose the final occurrence in 1 Corinthians adds the finishing touch to this lesson: Then comes the end, when <\/em>[Jesus] hands over<\/a><\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u1ff7, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9) the kingdom to God the Father, when he has brought to an end all rule and all authority and power<\/em>.19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
