noreferrer\">at that time<\/a><\/em>, Moses said to Israel, <em>to reveal to you the message of the Lord <\/em>(<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\">\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a>)<em>, because you were afraid <\/em>(<em>y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc\">\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05ea\u05dd<\/a>) <em>of the fire and would not go up the mountain<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then he recounted the ten commandments.\u00a0 Within them was a fearful description of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>: <em>I punish<\/em> <em>the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons for the sin of the fathers who reject me<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And in a footnote (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Deuteronomy+5:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">11<\/a>) the translators made it perfectly clear what form of punishment they had in mind: \u201cGod sometimes punishes children for the sins of a father (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Numbers+16:27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Num 16:27<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Numbers+16:32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">32<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Joshua+7:24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh 7:24-25<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/2+Samuel+21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Sam 21:1-9<\/a>).\u201d\u00a0 <a id=\"_punish\"><\/a>In other words <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>executes <em>the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons for the sin of the fathers who reject <\/em>Him.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_NET\"><\/a>That\u2019s what I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/02\/19\/torture-part-4\/#_punish\">thought<\/a>.\u00a0 And that\u2019s why I love the NET.\u00a0 Apart from its written record I would look back and think I had been completely insane.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that I had the NET to read when I was young, but that its translators came of age in the same religious milieu as I did.\u00a0 So in the spirit of <em>fearing the Lord<\/em> I want to slow way down to consider how they arrived at <em>I punish<\/em> as a translation of the Hebrew word <em>p\u00e2qad<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_p\u00e2qad\">\u05e4\u05e7\u05d3<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/deu\/5\/9\/t_bibles_158009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>).\u00a0 And this <em>fear <\/em>is not <em>reverence<\/em>, but the <em>fear <\/em>that keeps one from direct intercourse with <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>.\u00a0 Only Moses risked that, <em>because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Exodus+20:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exodus 20:5 (NET)<\/a> <em>p\u00e2qad <\/em>was translated <em>responding<\/em>.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"85\">Form of href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Deuteronomy+5:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for the sin<\/a><\/em>) and <em>\u015b\u00e2n\u00ea\u02bc <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Deuteronomy+5:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who reject me<\/a><\/em>) from the beginning to the giving of the law, and then from there to its restatement in Deuteronomy.\u00a0 I first encountered\u00a0<em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n <\/em>from the mouth of Cain after he <em>attacked his brother Abel and killed him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>So now, you are banished from the ground<\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+4:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/a> <\/em>said to him, <em>which has opened its mouth to receive your brother\u2019s blood from your hand<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Up to that time Cain had <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+4:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cultivated the ground<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 <em>When you try to cultivate the ground<\/em>, <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>continued, <em>it will no longer yield its best for you. \u00a0You will be a homeless wanderer on the earth<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Cain lamented (Genesis 4:13b, 14 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>My punishment <em>(<\/em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<em>, \u05e2\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9)<\/em> is too great to endure! <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/#_Table55\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>\u00a0 Look! \u00a0You are driving me off the land today, and I must hide from your presence. \u00a0I will be a homeless wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me will kill me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here the translators assumed that Cain lamented his <em>punishment <\/em>rather than his <em>sin<\/em>; <em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n <\/em>can mean both.\u00a0 When <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>prophesied to Abram the translators assumed the Amorites were not <em>punished <\/em>in the promised land they inhabited but that the land itself would not be given to Abram\u2019s descendants until the Amorites\u2019 <em>sin <\/em>reached some predetermined limit (Genesis 15:13b-16 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign country. \u00a0They will be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/27\/romans-part-19\/#_Table37\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0But I will execute judgment on the nation that they will serve. \u00a0Afterward they will come out with many possessions <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/27\/romans-part-19\/#_Table39\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0But as for you, you will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/27\/romans-part-19\/#_Table41\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0In the fourth generation your descendants will return here, for the sin <em>(<\/em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<em>, \u05e2\u05d5\u05df)<\/em> of the Amorites has not yet reached its limit <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/27\/romans-part-19\/#_Table43\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But Abram\/Abraham had no son yet by his wife Sarah (Genesis 17:15-21).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then God said to Abraham, \u201cAs for your wife, you must no longer call her Sarai; Sarah will be her name <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/#_Table17\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0I will bless her and will give you a son through her. \u00a0I will bless her and she will become a mother of nations. \u00a0Kings of countries will come from her <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/#_Table19\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Abraham bowed down with his face to the ground and laughed as he said to himself, \u201cCan a son be born to a man who is a hundred years old? \u00a0Can Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/#_Table21\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>?\u201d \u00a0Abraham said to God, \u201cO that Ishmael might live before you <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/#_Table23\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>God said, \u201cNo, Sarah your wife is going to bear you a son, and you will name him Isaac. \u00a0I will confirm my covenant with him as a perpetual covenant for his descendants after him <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/#_Table25\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0As for Ishmael, I have heard you. \u00a0I will indeed bless him, make him fruitful, and give him a multitude of descendants. \u00a0He will become the father of twelve princes; I will make him into a great nation <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/#_Table27\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this set time next year <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/#_Table29\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent during the hottest time of the day. \u00a0Abraham looked up and saw three men standing across from him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>One of them said, \u201cI will surely return to you when the season comes round again, and your wife Sarah will have a son!\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So Sarah laughed to herself, thinking, \u201cAfter I am worn out will I have pleasure, especially when my husband is old too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Lord said to Abraham, \u201cWhy did Sarah laugh and say, \u2018Will I really have a child when I am old?\u2019 \u00a0Is anything impossible for the Lord? \u00a0I will return to you when the season comes round again and Sarah will have a son.\u201d \u00a0Then Sarah lied, saying, \u201cI did not laugh,\u201d because she was afraid <em>(<\/em>y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<em>, \u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05d4)<\/em>. \u00a0But the Lord said, \u201cNo! \u00a0You did laugh.\u201d<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The next occurrence of <em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n <\/em>involved the judgment and condemnation of Sodom.\u00a0 <em>At dawn the angels hurried Lot along, saying, \u201cGet going! \u00a0Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or else you will be destroyed when the city is judged <\/em>(<em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/em>)!\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Competing values had met at Lot\u2019s front door (Genesis 19:4-9a NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Before they could lie down to sleep, all the men \u2013 both young and old, from every part of the city of Sodom \u2013 surrounded the house. \u00a0They shouted to Lot, \u201cWhere are the men who came to you tonight? \u00a0Bring them out to us so we can have sex with them!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lot went outside to them, shutting the door behind him. \u00a0He said, \u201cNo, my brothers! \u00a0Don\u2019t act so wickedly <em>(<\/em>r\u00e2\u02bda\u02bd<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_r\u00e2\u02bda\u02bd\">\u05ea\u05e8\u05e2\u05d5<\/a>)<\/em>! \u00a0Look, I have two daughters who have never had sexual relations with a man. \u00a0Let me bring them out to you, and you can do to them whatever you please. \u00a0Only don\u2019t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut of our way!\u201d they cried, and \u201cThis man came to live here as a foreigner, and now he dares to judge us! \u00a0We\u2019ll do more harm <em>(<\/em>r\u00e2\u02bda\u02bd<em>, \u05e0\u05e8\u05e2)<\/em> to you than to them!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The two angels<\/a><\/em>, <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>messengers, didn\u2019t allow the men of Sodom to fulfill their desire, nor did they allow Lot to defile his daughters to fulfill his family\u2019s ideal of hospitality.\u00a0 They <em>struck the men who were at the door of the house, from the youngest to the oldest, with blindness<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 And that brings me to the first occurrence of <em>p\u00e2qad<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Lord visited<\/em> (<em>p\u00e2qad<\/em>, \u05e4\u05e7\u05d3) <em>Sarah just as he had said he would and did for Sarah what he had promised<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The rabbis who translated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/21\/1\/t_bibles_21001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a> chose \u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03c3\u03ba\u03ad\u03c8\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03ba\u03ad\u03c0\u03c4\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03ba\u03ad\u03c0\u03c4\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) here. \u00a0I find \u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03c3\u03ba\u03ad\u03c8\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf at the beginning of the fulfillment of another promise as well.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/13\/the-jerusalem-council\/\">The Jerusalem Council<\/a> <em>listened to Barnabas and Paul while they explained all the miraculous signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a> James replied (Acts 15:13b-18 NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/16\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-1\/#_Table12\">Table1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/16\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-1\/#_Table13\">Table2<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBrothers, listen to me. \u00a0Simeon has explained <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Acts+15:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acts 15:7-11<\/a>)<\/em> how God first concerned himself <em>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03c3\u03ba\u03ad\u03c8\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03ba\u03ad\u03c0\u03c4\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9)<\/em> to select from among the Gentiles a people <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/16\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-1\/#sdfootnote16sym\">for<\/a> his name. \u00a0The words of the prophets agree with this, as it is written, \u2018<strong><em>After this I will return, and I will rebuild the fallen tent of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/16\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-1\/#sdfootnote17sym\">David<\/a>; I will rebuild its ruins and restore it, so that the rest of humanity may seek the Lord, namely, all the Gentiles I have called to be my own,<\/em><\/strong>\u2019<strong><em> says the Lord,<\/em><\/strong> who makes <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/16\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-1\/#sdfootnote18sym\">these things<\/a> known from <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/16\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-1\/#sdfootnote19sym\">long ago<\/a>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>James didn\u2019t quote the two women, Leah and Rachel.\u00a0 Rachel was beautiful.\u00a0 Leah was not.\u00a0 When evening came Jacob preferred to bed Rachel over Leah.\u00a0 <em>When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved<\/em> (<em>\u015b\u00e2n\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05e9\u05c1\u05e0\u05d5\u05d0\u05d4), <em>he enabled her to become pregnant while Rachel remained childless<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>She became pregnant again and had another son.\u00a0 She said, \u201cBecause the Lord heard that I was unloved<\/em> (<em>\u015b\u00e2n\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05e9\u05c1\u05e0\u05d5\u05d0\u05d4), <em>he gave me this one too.\u201d<\/em><a <em>\u015b\u00e2n\u00ea\u02bc <\/em>it matters very little whether Leah was a superstitious woman who mistook happenstance for interaction with <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>.\u00a0 As a matter of faith in <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> it is important to remember that Moses was not afraid of the fire, went up the mountain and spoke directly with Him.\u00a0 He said of Moses (Numbers 12:6-8a NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hear now my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> will make myself known to him in a vision; I will speak with him in a dream. \u00a0My servant Moses is not like this; he is faithful in all my house. \u00a0With him I will speak face to face, openly, and not in riddles; and he will see the form of the Lord <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was Moses who wrote that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> <em>saw <\/em>(<em>r\u00e2\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_r\u00e2\u02bc\u00e2h\">\u05d5\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0<\/a>)<em> that Leah was unloved<\/em> and <em>enabled her to become pregnant<\/em>.\u00a0 If I believe, the details pulse with life.\u00a0 Leah concurred with <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> at first: <em>The Lord has looked<\/em> (<em>r\u00e2\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05e8\u05d0\u05d4)<em> with pity on my oppressed condition<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a> she said when she was not having regular sex with Jacob.\u00a0 But after she was and had given birth to two sons, Reuben and Simeon, the idea that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> <em>saw <\/em>her became less comforting: <em>the Lord heard <\/em>(<em>sh\u00e2ma\u02bd<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_sh\u00e2ma\u02bd\">\u05d5\u05e9\u05de\u05e2<\/a>)<em> that I was unloved<\/em>, she amended her statement of faith.<\/p>\n<p><em>So then faith comes by hearing<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a> Paul wrote the Romans. \u00a0The best way to avoid faith in <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>is to avoid the Bible.\u00a0 Don\u2019t read it for yourself or listen to preaching or teaching from it.\u00a0 The second best way to avoid faith in <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>is to read the Bible, study it even, listen to plenty of sermons from it, but keep your mind focused on rules for you to obey.\u00a0 I know.\u00a0 I did it for years.<\/p>\n<p>With my mind focused on my own compliance, or lack of compliance, to rules <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Philippians+3:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">derived from the law<\/a> <\/em>I missed the grace of God, his gift of righteousness, the fruit of his Spirit.\u00a0 <em>Although they see they do not see, and although they hear they do not hear nor do they understand<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus promised those who trusted their religion, rites and rituals rather than <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees<\/em>, He critiqued their labors, <em>hypocrites! \u00a0You cross land and sea to make one convert, and when you get one, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/04\/26\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-13\/\">Elsewhere<\/a> I called my attempt \u201cto keep\u00a0<em>yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>law in my own strength&#8230;an occupational hazard of reading the Old Testament with a willing heart\u2026If\u00a0<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>\u00a0said\u00a0<em>do this<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>don\u2019t do that<\/em>, I said\u00a0<em>okay<\/em>, and woke up somewhere in the story of David to the fact that I was striving again to keep the law in my own strength, without\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.law.com\/Default.aspx?selected=1198\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">malice<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.law.com\/Default.aspx?selected=1198\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forethought<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 Jesus read the Old Testament and concluded, <em>You must all be born from above<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a> because what <em>is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Keeping that in view and remaining open to understanding how He got that out of the Old Testament helps to minimize the \u201coccupational hazard\u201d of studying it. \u00a0Another more manual technique has been to <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+16:24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deny<\/a> my suspicions of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, to take Him at his word, and to become more suspicious of the motives (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Timothy+1:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Timothy 1:5-7<\/a>) and agendas (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+4:17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Galatians 4:17-31<\/a>) of those who would dissuade me from trusting his salvation.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, Rachel had a son, Joseph.\u00a0 <em>When Joseph\u2019s brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated <\/em>(<em>\u015b\u00e2n\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1\u05e0\u05d0\u05d5) <em>Joseph and were not able to speak to him kindly<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated <\/em>(<em>\u015b\u00e2n\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05e9\u05c1\u05e0\u05d0) <em>him even more<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>He said to them<\/em> (Genesis 37:6-8 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cListen to this dream I had: There we were, binding sheaves of grain in the middle of the field. \u00a0Suddenly my sheaf rose up and stood upright and your sheaves surrounded my sheaf and bowed down to it!\u201d \u00a0Then his brothers asked him, \u201cDo you really think you will rule over us or have dominion over us?\u201d \u00a0They hated <em>(<\/em>\u015b\u00e2n\u00ea\u02bc<em>, \u05e9\u05c1\u05e0\u05d0)<\/em> him even more because of his dream and because of what he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Joseph <em>had another dream, and told it to his brothers <\/em>(Genesis 37:9, 10 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLook,\u201d he said. \u00a0\u201cI had another dream. \u00a0The sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.\u201d \u00a0When he told his father and his brothers, his father rebuked him, saying, \u201cWhat is this dream that you had? \u00a0Will I, your mother, and your brothers really come and bow down
