Part 88"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This is the reason I was often hindered from coming to you<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> Paul continued his letter to believers in Rome.\u00a0 The hindrance here was Paul\u2019s own \u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03cd\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\">\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>), translated <em>I desire<\/em> (NET) and <em>have I strived<\/em> (KJV), his own fondness for honor: <em>And in this way I desire to preach where Christ has not been named, so as not to build on another person\u2019s foundation, but as it is written: <\/em>\u201c<strong><em>Those who were not told about him will see<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>and those who have not heard will understand<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But in two other letters Paul used forms of \u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 without a hint of pride (1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now on the topic of brotherly love <em>(\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03af\u03b1\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03af\u03b1\">\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> you have no need for anyone to write you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another.\u00a0 And indeed you are practicing it toward all the brothers and sisters in all of Macedonia. \u00a0But we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, to aspire <em>(\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9)<\/em> to lead a quiet life, to attend to your own business, and to work with your hands, as we commanded you.\u00a0 In this way you will live a decent life before outsiders and not be in need.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Granted, Paul\u2019s own aspiration was to <em>preach where Christ has not been named, so as not to build on another person\u2019s foundation, <\/em>while his aspiration for Macedonian believers was that they <em>lead a quiet life, to attend to<\/em> [their] <em>own business, and to work with<\/em> [their] <em>hands, as we commanded<\/em> [them].\u00a0 But that implies a sense of order and rank, not necessarily a prideful aspiration on Paul\u2019s part.\u00a0 To the Corinthian believers he wrote (2 Corinthians 5:1-10 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For we know that if our earthly house, the tent we live in, is dismantled, we have a building from God, a house not built by human hands, that is eternal in the heavens. \u00a0For in this earthly house we groan, because we desire <em>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed, after we have put on our heavenly house, we will not be found naked. \u00a0For we groan while we are in this tent, since we are weighed down, because we do not want to be unclothed, but clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. \u00a0Now the one who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave us the Spirit as a down payment. \u00a0Therefore we are always full of courage, and we know that as long as we are alive here on earth we are absent from the Lord \u2013 for we live by faith, not by sight. \u00a0Thus we are full of courage and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. \u00a0So then whether we are alive or away, we make it our ambition <em>(\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03cd\u03bc\u03b5\u03b8\u03b1, another form of \u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9)<\/em> to please him. \u00a0For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be paid back according to what he has done while in the body, whether good or evil.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Surely Paul\u2019s ambition to <em>preach where Christ has not been named, so as not to build on another person\u2019s foundation, <\/em>was part of his <em>ambition to please<\/em> God.\u00a0 Still, I wonder how different church history might have been if Paul had arrived first in Rome.\u00a0 He had <em>desired <\/em>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03af\u03b1\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03af\u03b1\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <em>to come to<\/em> them <em>for many years<\/em>:\u00a0 <em>But now there is nothing more to keep me in these regions, and I have for many years desired to come to you when I go to Spain<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>For I hope to visit you when I pass through and that you will help me on my journey there, after I have enjoyed your company for a while<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He acknowledged the same at the beginning of his letter to them (Romans 1:8-13a NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>First of all, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed throughout the whole world. \u00a0For God, whom I serve in my spirit by preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness that I continually remember you and I always ask in my prayers, if perhaps now at last I may succeed in visiting <em>(\u1f10\u03bb\u03b8\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f14\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> you according to the will of God. \u00a0For I long to see you, so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, that is, that we may be mutually comforted by one another\u2019s faith, both yours and mine. \u00a0I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I often intended to come <em>(\u1f10\u03bb\u03b8\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd, a form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9)<\/em> to you (and was prevented until now)\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Greek word translated <em>was prevented<\/em> was \u1f10\u03ba\u03c9\u03bb\u03cd\u03b8\u03b7\u03bd (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u03ba\u03c9\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9\">\u03ba\u03c9\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 It seems to be a stronger hindrance (see the <a href=\"#_table\">table<\/a> below) than \u1f10\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03c4\u03cc\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u1f10\u03b3\u03ba\u03cc\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\">\u1f10\u03b3\u03ba\u03cc\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9<\/a>) in <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+15:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Romans 15:22<\/a>, though Paul strengthened \u1f10\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03c4\u03cc\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd with \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u1f70 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c2\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>).\u00a0 So while he listed his own desire for honor at the end of his letter as the reason he was hindered from visiting Rome, there is a hint here that visit was deliberately delayed as something not yet <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+1:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1ff7 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bb\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (\u201cin\u201d or \u201cby the will of God;\u201d NET: <em>according to<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>I suppose I imagine that if Paul had preceded Peter in Rome churches might have become more facilitators than <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/James+4:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arbiters<\/a> of the new covenant.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking especially here of <em>for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But historically the western church became the de facto government after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constantine_the_Great\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Constantine<\/a> moved his capital east.\u00a0 Even Paul proposed governmental functions for the church to deal with those who were not led by the Spirit (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Timothy+1:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Timothy 1:5-11<\/a>) in Corinth (1 Corinthians 6:1-8 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When any of you has a legal dispute with another, does he dare go to court before the unrighteous <em>(\u1f00\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03c9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f04\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f04\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> rather than before the saints <em>(\u1f01\u03b3\u03af\u03c9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f05\u03b3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f05\u03b3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>? \u00a0Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world?\u00a0 And if the world is to be judged by you, are you not competent to settle trivial suits? \u00a0Do you not know that we will judge angels? \u00a0Why not ordinary matters! \u00a0So if you have ordinary lawsuits, do you appoint as judges those who have no standing in the church? \u00a0I say this to your shame! \u00a0Is there no one among you wise enough to settle disputes between fellow Christians <em>(\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03bf\u1fe6, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2\">\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>? \u00a0Instead, does a Christian <em>(\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u1f78\u03c2, another form of \u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em> sue a Christian <em>(\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03bf\u1fe6, a form of \u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em>, and do this before unbelievers <em>(\u1f00\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f04\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f04\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>? \u00a0The fact that you have lawsuits among yourselves demonstrates that you have already been defeated <em>(\u1f25\u03c4\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u1f25\u03c4\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1\">\u1f25\u03c4\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0Why not rather be wronged? \u00a0Why not rather be cheated? \u00a0But you yourselves wrong and cheat, and you do this to your brothers and sisters <em>(\u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03bf\u03cd\u03c2, another form of \u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2)<\/em>!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To speculate whether western churches would be different if Paul had preceded Peter to Rome is ultimately foolishness.\u00a0 We who have been <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+12:32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drawn<\/a> to Christ by the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+2:4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kindness<\/a> of God are the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f10\u03ba\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\">\u1f10\u03ba\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>.\u00a0 The character of our churches here and now is determined predominantly by our faith.\u00a0 Are <em>we <\/em>facilitators of the new covenant or arbiters, judges with evil motives (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/James+2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James 2:1-4 NET<\/a>)?\u00a0 When Jesus said <em>Do not judge<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> He knew to whom He spoke, intimately, both as Creator and a partaker of our humanity.<\/p>\n<p>We judge everything.\u00a0 We judge the weight of an object before we pick it up.\u00a0 We judge the distance and velocity of the things we see around us.\u00a0 We judge everyone: beautiful, ugly, rich, poor, friendly, aggressive, lying, truthful, wise, foolish.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think Jesus\u2019 point was that we stop doing the thing that makes it possible for us to live and move in this world.\u00a0 His point was\u2014that after we make those instinctive judgments about other people\u2014we <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+Corinthians+13:4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">love<\/a> them as those for whom Christ <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+John+2:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">died<\/a> with his own <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">love<\/a> that flows through us from his Spirit, believing with his own <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">faithfulness<\/a> that flows through us from His Spirit that <em>we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of believers<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I did a word study of \u1f10\u03bb\u03b8\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd (a form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9), translated <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+15:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from coming<\/a> <\/em>and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+15:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to come<\/a><\/em>, not because I thought there was anything mysterious about Paul\u2019s usage of the word in Romans 15:22 and 23, but because I know I\u2019ll want a good grounding in the usage of forms of \u1f14\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 when I come around again to <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+23:34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew 23:34-36<\/a>.\u00a0 Doing so exposed me to an interesting study in John\u2019s Gospel narrative that I think pertinent here as it relates to judging others.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus spoke to the \u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03b9 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), translated <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+5:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jewish leaders<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019ll leave it in Greek here because I don\u2019t think being <em>Jewish <\/em>had anything to do with it beyond the historical fact that they were hardened (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/yeshayahu-isaiah-chapter-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah 6:9-12<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+13:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew 13:10-17<\/a>) to the point of being enthralled with what I have called the <em>religious mind<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>You study the scriptures thoroughly<\/em>, Jesus said to those with religious minds, <em>because you think in them you possess eternal life, and it is these same scriptures that <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/02\/06\/romans-part-55\/#_yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\">testify about me<\/a>, but you are not willing<\/em> (\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9\">\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) <em>to come to me so that you may have life<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0He continued addressing those with religious minds: <em>No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. \u00a0It is written in the prophets,<\/em> \u2018<strong><em>And they will all be taught by God<\/em><\/strong>.<em>\u2019 \u00a0Everyone who hears and learns from the Father comes to me<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Later Jesus explained his teaching to his disciples (John 6:63-65 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature <em>(\u03c3\u1f70\u03c1\u03be, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be\">\u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be<\/a>)<\/em> is of no help! \u00a0The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. \u00a0But there are some of you who do not believe\u2026Because of this I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has allowed <em>(\u03b4\u03b5\u03b4\u03bf\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9\">\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>; literally, <\/em>given<em>)<\/em> him to come\u201d <em>(KJV:<\/em> except it were given unto him of my Father<em>).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Then Jesus said<\/em> (John 7:33-36 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI will be with you for only a little while longer, and then I am going to the one who sent me. \u00a0You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then the <em>\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03b9<\/em> said to one another, \u201cWhere is he going to go that we cannot find him? \u00a0He is not going to go to the Jewish people dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he? \u00a0What did he mean by saying, \u2018You will look for me but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come\u2019?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Then Jesus said to them again<\/em> (John 8:21-24 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI am going away, and you will look for me but will die in your sin. \u00a0Where I am going you cannot come.\u201d \u00a0So the <em>\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03b9<\/em> began to say, \u201cPerhaps he is going to kill himself, because he says, \u2018Where I am going you cannot come.\u2019\u201d \u00a0Jesus replied, \u201cYou people are from below; I am from above. \u00a0You people are from this world; I am not from this world. \u00a0Thus I told you that you will die in your sins. \u00a0For unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>When Judas had gone out, Jesus said<\/em> [to his remaining disciples] (John 13:31-38 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNow the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. \u00a0If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him right away. \u00a0Children, I am still with you for a little while. \u00a0You will look for me, and just as I said to the \u00a0Everyone will know by this that you are my disciples \u2013 if you have love for one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simon Peter said to him, \u201cLord, where are you going?\u201d Jesus replied, \u201cWhere I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.\u201d \u00a0Peter said to him, \u201cLord, why can\u2019t I follow you now? \u00a0I will lay down <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/05\/10\/sowing-to-the-flesh-part-2\/\">my life<\/a> for you!\u201d \u00a0Jesus answered, \u201cWill you lay down your life for me? \u00a0I tell you the solemn truth, the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apart from the Holy Spirit we are no different than the worst of sinners or the hardest of those with religious minds.\u00a0 <em>For who concedes you any superiority?<\/em> Paul wrote believers in Corinth.\u00a0 <em>What do you have that you did not receive?\u00a0 And if you received it, why do you boast as though you did not?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>You were running well<\/em>, Paul wrote believers in Galatia, <em>who prevented you from obeying the truth?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I was drawn here because \u1f10\u03bd\u03ad\u03ba\u03bf\u03c8\u03b5\u03bd, translated <em>prevented<\/em>, is a form of \u1f10\u03b3\u03ba\u03cc\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9 like \u1f10\u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03c4\u03cc\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd, translated <em>I was<\/em>\u2026<em>hindered <\/em>in Romans 15:22.\u00a0 It\u2019s not wrong to translate \u03bc\u1f74 \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>; <em>to convince<\/em>, <em>persuade<\/em>) <em>from obeying<\/em>.\u00a0 Several of the occurrences of forms of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9 are linked directly to the action that conviction or persuasion produced.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>chief priests and the elders persuaded<\/em> (\u1f14\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9) <em>the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus killed<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 When Pilate asked, <em>\u201cThen what should I do with Jesus who is called the Christ?\u201d \u00a0They all said, \u201cCrucify him!\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><em> \u00a0<\/em>In Lystra <em>Jews <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/13\/the-jerusalem-council\/#sdfootnote9sym\">came<\/a> from Antioch and Iconium, and after winning the crowds over<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, another form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9), <em>they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Paul went to the Jews in the synagogue <\/em>[in Thessalonica]<em>, as he customarily did, and on three Sabbath days he addressed them from the scriptures, explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and to rise from the dead, saying, \u201cThis Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.\u201d \u00a0Some of them were persuaded<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9) <em>and joined Paul and Silas, along with a large group of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Demetrius, a silversmith in Ephesus, complained that <em>Paul has persuaded<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2, another form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9) <em>and turned away a large crowd, not only in Ephesus but in practically all of the province of Asia, by saying that gods made by hands are not gods at all<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 A <em>centurion was more convinced <\/em>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf, another form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9)<em> by the captain and the ship\u2019s owner than by what Paul said<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So he ignored Paul\u2019s warning that <em>the voyage is going to end in disaster<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a> and <em>they weighed anchor and sailed close along the coast of Crete<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a> directly into a storm that ran them aground <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Acts+27:33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two weeks<\/a> later.<\/p>\n<p>So while it is not wrong to focus on the <em>obedience <\/em>aspect of forms of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9, it is a bit of misdirection in Galatians 5:7 since <em>obedience <\/em>was not really at issue.\u00a0 Believers in Galatia were all too willing to obey the commands of anyone who came along in the name of Christ.\u00a0 Apparently some had come preaching circumcision.\u00a0 <em>Listen!\u00a0 I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you at all!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He said this not to the disobedient but the overly obedient.\u00a0 For the act of circumcision as a body modification was meaningless to Paul vis-\u00e0-vis the Gospel of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 7:17-19 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nevertheless, as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each person, so must he live. \u00a0I give this sort of direction in all the churches. \u00a0Was anyone called after he had been circumcised? \u00a0He should not try to undo his circumcision. \u00a0Was anyone called who is uncircumcised? \u00a0He should not get circumcised. \u00a0Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. \u00a0Instead, keeping God\u2019s commandments is what counts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul\u2019s concern was the <em>persuasion <\/em>(\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u1f74, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03ae\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03ae<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Galatians 5:8<\/a>) that led to the <em>obedience <\/em>of circumcision.\u00a0 His concern was that the desire for circumcision indicated that the Galatian believers were not <em>persuaded <\/em>of the truth of <em>the grace of Christ<\/em> and were, in fact, <em>following a different gospel<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The act of circumcision among Gentile believers signified a different persuasion to Paul, a different faith that the Holy Spirit they had received was incompetent and required the aid of the \u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f76 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be\">\u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be<\/a>), translated <em>human effort<\/em> (Galatians 3:2b-5 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Did you receive the Spirit by doing the works of the law or by believing what you heard? \u00a0Are you so foolish?\u00a0 Although you began with the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by human effort <em>(\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f76, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be; literally, <\/em>flesh<em>)<\/em>? \u00a0Have you suffered so many things for nothing? \u2013 if indeed it was for nothing. \u00a0Does God then give you the Spirit and work miracles among you by your doing the works of the law or by your believing what you heard?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>You who are trying to be declared righteous by the law have been alienated from <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/24\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-2\/#sdfootnote8sym\">Christ<\/a><\/em>, Paul wrote obedient believers persuaded by an incorrect persuasion, <em>you have fallen away from grace! \u00a0For through the Spirit, by faith, we wait expectantly for the hope of righteousness. \u00a0For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision carries any weight \u2013 the only thing that matters is faith working through love<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/09\/07\/romans-part-88\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 None of this was written to disobedient people unwilling to obey
