id=\"_punish\"><\/a>There doesn\u2019t seem to be anything about the Hebrew words themselves that would compel anyone to translate \u05e4\u05e7\u05d3 (<em>p\u00e2qad<\/em>) <em>I punish<\/em> or \u05e2\u05d5\u05df (<em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/em>) <em>for the sin<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In fact, forms of <em>p\u00e2qad <\/em>were only translated <em>punish <\/em>or <em>punishment <\/em>three other times in the NET prior to Deuteronomy 5:9.\u00a0 Two occur after Israel worshipped the golden calf.\u00a0 Moses said (Exodus 32:30-35 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou have committed a very serious sin, but now I will go up to the Lord \u2013 perhaps I can make atonement on behalf of your sin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Moses returned to the Lord and said, \u201cAlas, this people has committed a very serious sin, and they have made for themselves gods of gold <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/07\/jephthahs-religious-mind\/#_Table27\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0But now, if you will forgive <em>(<\/em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_n\u00e2\u015b\u00e2\u02bc\">\u05ea\u05e9\u05c1\u05d0<\/a>)<\/em> their sin\u2026, but if not, wipe me out from your book that you have written\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/07\/jephthahs-religious-mind\/#_Table29\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0The Lord said to Moses, \u201cWhoever has sinned against me \u2013 that person I will wipe out of my book. \u00a0So now go, lead the people to the place I have spoken to you about. \u00a0See, my angel will go before you. \u00a0But on the day that I punish <em>(<\/em>p\u00e2qad<em>, \u05e4\u05e7\u05d3\u05d9; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/shemot-exodus-chapter-32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanakh<\/a>: <\/em>I visit<em>)<\/em>, I will indeed punish <em>(<\/em>p\u00e2qad<em>, \u05d5\u05e4\u05e7\u05d3\u05ea\u05d9; Tanakh: <\/em>I will visit<em>)<\/em> them for their sin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the Lord sent a plague <em>(<\/em>n\u00e2gaph<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_n\u00e2gaph\">\u05d5\u05d9\u05d2\u05e3<\/a>)<\/em> on the people because they had made the calf \u2013 the one Aaron made.<span style=\"font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Nimbus Sans L', sans-serif; font-style: normal;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don\u2019t have any quarrel with describing this <em>plague<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> as punishment, but it occurs in a particular context.\u00a0 Though Moses offered\u2014<em>wipe me out from your book that you have written<\/em>\u2014<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>said, <em>Whoever has sinned against me \u2013 that person I will wipe out of my book<\/em>.\u00a0 Later in his address recorded in Deuteronomy Moses said:\u00a0 <em>Fathers must not be put to death for what their children do, nor children for what their fathers do; each must be put to death for his own sin<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_notion\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/thetorah.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rabbi Dr. Zev Farber<\/a> in his article \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thetorah.com\/punishing-children-for-the-sins-of-their-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Punishing Children for the Sins of their Parents<\/a>,\u201d on <a href=\"http:\/\/thetorah.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TheTorah<\/a> online wrote about \u201cthe surprising claim\u201d from Rabbi Yossi bar Chanina in the Babylonian Talmud \u201cthat in four cases the prophets overturned a decree Moses makes in the Torah.\u201d\u00a0 Apparently Rabbi Yossi bar Chanina held that not only Deuteronomy 5:9 but Exodus 20:5 \u201cmakes a clear and strong claim that in at least one case\u2014worshipping other gods or idols\u2014God punishes the descendants of the sinner until the fourth generation.\u201d \u00a0Rabbi Farber took issue with one of the \u201cfour cases\u201d:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The prophet Ezekiel, who was exiled to Babylon in 597, offers a torrent of arguments and rhetoric against the concept of punishing children for the sins of the parents. He does not frame it as an argument against the Torah&#8230;but rather he frames it as a response to a popular notion (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Ezekiel+18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ezek 18<\/a>).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rabbi Yossi bar Chanina apparently did not accept that \u201cGod punishes the descendants of the sinner until the fourth generation\u201d was an erroneous popular notion and so he pit Ezekiel against Moses and even <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>Himself.\u00a0 This tenacious aspect of the religious mind to justify itself should be familiar to us.\u00a0 How many generations of English speaking followers of Jesus have believed that <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f04\u03bd\u03c9\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\">\u1f04\u03bd\u03c9\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> meant <em>again<\/em>, Nicodemus\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/14\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-2\/\">misunderstanding<\/a> of Jesus\u2019 words?\u00a0 <em>How can a man be born when he is old? \u00a0He cannot enter his mother\u2019s womb and be born a second time, can he?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>Jesus<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<em>answered<\/em> (John 3:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/14\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-2\/#_Table2\">5<\/a>-8 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. \u00a0What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. \u00a0Do not be amazed that I said to you, \u2018You must all be born from above <em>(\u1f04\u03bd\u03c9\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd)<\/em>.\u2019 \u00a0The wind blows wherever it will, and you hear the sound it makes, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. \u00a0So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_experiment\"><\/a>I want to simplify the world to consider\u00a0<em>p\u00e2qad <\/em>in the context of Adam and two of his sons Cain and Abel.\u00a0 First, for background, consider Paul\u2019s understanding of their situation (Romans 5:12-14 NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/27\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-3\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So then, just as sin entered the world through one man <em>[e.g., Adam]<\/em> and death through sin, and so death spread to all people because all sinned \u2013 for before the law was given, sin was in the world, but there is no accounting for sin when there is no law. \u00a0Yet death reigned from Adam until <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/27\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-3\/#sdfootnote1sym\">Moses<\/a> even over those who did not sin in the same way that Adam (who is a type of the coming one) transgressed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>And the Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>was pleased with Abel and his offering<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But when Cain killed Abel it is apparently possible to argue by the Hebrew words of Deuteronomy 5:9 that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>punished Abel for Adam\u2019s sin.\u00a0 It\u2019s not an argument I want to make before the judgment seat of Christ.\u00a0 <em>Then the Lord<\/em> (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>said to Cain, \u201cWhere is your brother Abel?\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Cain lacked David\u2019s knowledge of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> (Psalm 139:1-12 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>O Lord, you examine me and know. \u00a0You know when I sit down and when I get up; even from far away you understand my motives. \u00a0You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest; you are aware of everything I do. \u00a0Certainly my tongue does not frame a word without you, O Lord <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em>, being thoroughly aware of it. \u00a0You squeeze me in from behind and in front; you place your hand on me. \u00a0Your knowledge is beyond my comprehension; it is so far beyond me, I am unable to fathom it.<\/p>\n<p>Where can I go to escape your spirit?\u00a0 Where can I flee to escape your presence? \u00a0If I were to ascend to heaven, you would be there.\u00a0 If I were to sprawl out in Sheol, there you would be. \u00a0If I were to fly away on the wings of the dawn, and settle down on the other side of the sea, even there your hand would guide me, your right hand would grab hold of me. \u00a0If I were to say, \u201cCertainly the darkness will cover me, and the light will turn to night all around me,\u201d even the darkness is not too dark for you to see, and the night is as bright as day; darkness and light are the same to you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_omniscience\"><\/a>Cain mistook <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>question\u2014<em>Where is your brother Abel?<\/em>\u2014for ignorance of what he had done rather than as an opportunity to confess, and repent of, his rash act.\u00a0 We can only imagine how differently this scene might have played out if Cain had expressed his own shock and horror at what he had done in anger, anger directed primarily at <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+4:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rejection<\/a> of his offering.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t take that to mean that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>was ignorant that Cain murdered Abel: <em>The voice of your brother\u2019s blood is crying out to me from the ground!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Nor do I take it to mean that David was disputing with Moses or imagining novel qualities of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>.\u00a0 I assume that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>is ever this knowledgeable and Cain was simply ignorant of it.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_omniscient\"><\/a>Cain wasn\u2019t stupid.\u00a0 Consider his clever evasion to <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/em> question,\u00a0<em>Where is your brother Abel<\/em>: <em>I don\u2019t know!\u00a0 Am I my brother\u2019s guardian?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Apparently, he reasoned that his father had tripped himself up by being too forthright with <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>: <em>I heard you moving about in the orchard<\/em>, Adam had answered <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>question, <em>and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As Cain understood it, the knowledge Adam let slip\u2014<em>I was naked<\/em>\u2014enabled <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>to infer what his father had done: <em>Who told you that you were naked? y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>asked Adam. \u00a0<em>Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0But again, I don\u2019t assume that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>had to infer what He already knew Adam had done simply because Cain didn\u2019t know Him.<\/p>\n<p>In a similar way I assume that the word of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>(\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) that came to <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Ezekiel+18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ezekiel<\/a> is the same word of the same <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>revealed to Moses and recorded in Deuteronomy 5:9.\u00a0 The erroneous popular notion\u2014<em>Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear <\/em>(<em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_n\u00e2\u015b\u00e2\u02bc\">\u05e0\u05e9\u05c1\u05d0<\/a>) <em>the iniquity <\/em>(<em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n\">\u05d1\u05e2\u05d5\u05df<\/a>) <em>of the father?<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014that the son should or must die for the father\u2019s sin (Ezekiel 18:20 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/yichezkel-ezekiel-chapter-18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanakh<\/a>) was the misunderstanding of religious minds no matter how many famous rabbis espoused it.\u00a0 <a id=\"_conclusion\"><\/a>And so I take the translation of \u05e4\u05e7\u05d3 (<em>p\u00e2qad<\/em>) as <em>I punish<\/em> in Deuteronomy 5:9 as a perpetuation of an erroneous popular notion of religious minds that was clearly corrected in Ezekiel 18.<\/p>\n<p>I am not yet <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/1+John+4:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">perfected in love<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 The first thing that comes to mind when things don\u2019t go my way is that God is <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/05\/03\/torture-part-5\/\">punishing<\/a> me for something.\u00a0 Faith in <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> comes from the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fruit of his Spirit<\/a>, along with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control.\u00a0 <a id=\"_sour\"><\/a>If I think of verses like Deuteronomy 5:9 from the perspective of sons, grandsons and great grandsons, I will come to the same erroneous conclusion, what Rabbi Farber called Sour Grapes Theology:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The sour grapes theology paints the punishment of descendants as a harsh but necessary way of God dispensing justice. Full punishment of a sinner may include the punishment of his family.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_transmit\"><\/a>I think it\u2019s more productive to view Deuteronomy 5:9 from the perspective of iniquitous fathers, particularly iniquitous fathers who don\u2019t want the horror of their iniquity visited upon their children.\u00a0 <em>For <\/em>[our earthly fathers] <em>disciplined us for a little while as seemed good to them, but<\/em> [God] <em>does so for our benefit, that we may share his holiness<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 My children were not my biological offspring so I won\u2019t even comment on passing on my iniquity via <em>nature<\/em>.\u00a0 But the iniquity I passed on to them via <em>nurture <\/em>was not merely a matter of my inept blundering.<\/p>\n<p>As I think of it now I recall how often I passed on my perverse views of life, the way things \u201creally\u201d work.\u00a0 And I did so with as much or more conviction than anything I taught them about Christ and his righteousness.\u00a0 Add to that my own <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#_personification\">on-again-off-again<\/a> righteousness\u2014sometimes led by the Holy Spirit, sometimes not so much\u2014and I have a truly horrifying picture of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> my children! \u00a0And this, when I wanted what was best for them.<\/p>\n<p>I find myself crying aloud with Cain\u2019s words (if not his meaning): My iniquity (<em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n\">\u05e2\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9<\/a>) is too great to endure (<em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_n\u00e2\u015b\u00e2\u02bc\">\u05de\u05e0\u05e9\u05c1\u05d0<\/a>)!\u00a0 What hope do I have but that which is to be found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/05\/28\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-14\/\">long name<\/a> of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>?\u00a0 <em>The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, and abounding in loyal love and faithfulness, keeping loyal love for thousands,<\/em> [bearing] (<em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05e0\u05e9\u05c1\u05d0) <em>iniquity <\/em>(<em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/em>, \u05e2\u05d5\u05df) <em>and transgression and sin<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a prophecy that reads so much like history unbelievers doubt its authenticity, <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>spoke of disobedient (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/vayikra-leviticus-chapter-26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leviticus 26:13-17<\/a>) survivors (Leviticus 26:39, 40 Tanakh):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies&#8217; lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them. \u00a0And they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, in their treachery which they committed against Me, and also that they have walked contrary unto Me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Confession of one\u2019s own iniquity is obvious.\u00a0 Confession of one\u2019s fathers\u2019 iniquity is necessary because we are far too likely to mistake our fathers\u2019 iniquity for the way things are done, especially if those fathers were religious leaders of some note.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_theshack\"><\/a>In the movie <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Shack_(2017_film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Shack<\/a> in a dream within a vision during a life-threatening coma Mack (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sam_Worthington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sam Worthington<\/a>) spends a weekend in a cabin at a lake with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 His wife Nan (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radha_Mitchell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Radha Mitchell<\/a>) calls God Papa, a bit too familiar for Mack\u2019s taste at the beginning of the film.<\/p>\n<p>Papa (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Octavia_Spencer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Octavia Spencer<\/a>) appears to Mack as the neighbor woman who, looking at young Mack\u2019s bruised face, said, \u201cDaddies aren\u2019t supposed to do that to their kids.\u00a0 It ain\u2019t love.\u00a0 You understand?\u201d\u00a0 Papa explains to adult Mack, \u201cAfter what you been through, I didn\u2019t think you could handle a father right now.\u201d\u00a0 But once Mack has God in his hands, so to speak, he has a lifetime of blame to unleash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re the almighty God, right?\u201d he accuses Papa.\u00a0 \u201cYou know everything.\u00a0 You\u2019re everywhere, all at once.\u00a0 And you have limitless power.\u00a0 Yet, somehow you let my little girl die.\u00a0 When she needed you most, you abandoned her.\u201d\u00a0 Mack\u2019s 7-year-old daughter Missy (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm7401885\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Am\u00e9lie Eve<\/a>) was abducted by a serial killer.\u00a0 Nothing of her was ever found but her bloodstained dress.\u00a0 Still, Mack\u2019s first salvo is mostly a ruse that doesn\u2019t quite get to the heart of his issue with God.<\/p>\n<p>That first night he reads himself to sleep with the Old Testament and dreams of Missy\u2019s abduction, a dream within a dream within a vision in a coma. \u00a0Missy calls out to him for rescue.\u00a0 The next morning at breakfast Mack moves one step closer to the real issue.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Mack: Everybody knows you punish the people who disappoint you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Papa: Hmm.\u00a0 Nope.\u00a0 I don\u2019t need to punish people.\u00a0 Sin is its own punishment.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As difficult as it is for you to accept, I\u2019m in the middle of everything you perceive to be a mess, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+8:28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">workin\u2019 for your good<\/a>.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Later, after a stroll across the lake with Jesus (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aviv_Alush\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aviv Alush<\/a>), Mack meets Wisdom (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alice_Braga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alice Braga<\/a>) in a cave beneath a waterfall.\u00a0 She helps him take his first steps toward obeying Jesus\u2019 command: <em>Do not judge so that you will not be judged<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Sitting with Wisdom, Mack approaches the heart of the matter.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Mack: You know, what I don\u2019t understand is how God can love Missy and put her through so much horror.\u00a0 She was innocent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Wisdom: I know.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mack: Did he use her to punish me?\u00a0 \u2018Cause that\u2019s not fair.\u00a0 And she didn\u2019t deserve it.\u00a0 My wife and my children didn\u2019t deserve it.\u00a0 Now, I might.\u00a0 \u2018Cause you know I\u2019m\u2026<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mack can never bring himself to confess that he murdered his father.\u00a0 Later that day Mack acknowledges being overly hard on God.\u00a0 Papa responds: \u201cI can work incredible good out of unspeakable tragedies.\u00a0 But that doesn\u2019t mean I orchestrate the tragedies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That evening Mack is taken to meet the abusive father he poisoned.\u00a0 Before he can say anything more than \u201cDad\u201d his father says, \u201cMack, I\u2019m so sorry for everything.\u00a0 I was blind and I couldn\u2019t see you.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t see anyone.\u201d\u00a0 Still, Mack can\u2019t or won\u2019t confess his murder, he only makes excuses.\u00a0 \u201cSon, I forgive you,\u201d his father continues.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019ve become the father I could never be.\u00a0 And I\u2019m so proud of you.\u00a0 Can you ever forgive me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the movie Papa protested that she didn\u2019t \u201corchestrate the tragedies.\u201d\u00a0 Still, woven into the fabric of The Shack is a serial killer who came to a campground to abduct a little girl.\u00a0 His victim of opportunity was a murderer\u2019s daughter.\u00a0 Papa in Mack\u2019s dream in a vision in a coma in a movie may want to leave it to chance or fate or karma, but in Scripture <em>visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children <\/em>is as much a part of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>self-proclaimed name as <em>forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0That\u2019s as important in reality as it proved to be in The Shack.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning Papa appears to Mack as a man (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Graham_Greene_(actor)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graham Greene<\/a>).\u00a0 \u201cFor what we have to do today you\u2019re gonna need a father,\u201d Papa explains.\u00a0 He wants Mack to forgive the man who murdered his daughter.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Mack: So, you just let him get away with it?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Papa: Nobody gets away with anything\u2026I\u2019m not asking you to excuse what he did.\u00a0
