from it,\u2019 cursed is the ground thanks to you; in painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Lord (<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) God (<em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd) had commanded Adam: <em>\u201cYou may freely eat fruit from every tree of the orchard, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will surely die.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Eve <em>saw that the tree produced fruit that was good for food, was attractive to the eye, and was desirable for making one wise<\/em>, so <em>she took some of its fruit and ate it<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 When she brought some to Adam she brought not only her recommendation but empirical evidence that she had both <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+3:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">touched<\/a> it and eaten it and had not died.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_preference\"><\/a>Adam preferred the voice of his wife to the voice of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>.\u00a0 When Jacob <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_preference\">preferred<\/a> the beautiful Rachel over Leah <em>the Lord saw that Leah was unloved<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u015b\u00e2n\u00ea\u02bc\">\u015b\u00e2n\u00ea\u02bc<\/a><\/em>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In other words Adam <em>hated <\/em>the voice of God relative to that of his wife, the voice of God was <em>unloved<\/em>.\u00a0 <a id=\"_visitation\"><\/a>For the sake of argument I\u2019ll describe Adam\u2019s iniquity as <em>defiance<\/em>: <em>Adam was not deceived<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> Paul assured Timothy.<\/p>\n<p>Adam\u2019s defiance visited upon Cain became a <em>murderous rage<\/em>: <em>Cain became very angry <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/#_Table43\">Table<\/a>]&#8230;<em>Cain said to his brother Abel, \u201cLet\u2019s go out to the field.\u201d \u00a0While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Cain\u2019s murderous rage combined with the memory of the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+4:15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mercy<\/a> <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> showed him became a <em>defiant self-righteousness<\/em> in his descendant Lamech, perhaps even <em>incipient tribal law <\/em>(Genesis 4:23, 24 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lamech said to his wives, \u201cAdah and Zillah!\u00a0 Listen <em>(<\/em>sh\u00e2ma\u02bd<em>, \u05e9\u05de\u05e2\u05df; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/4\/23\/t_bibles_4023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad, another form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em> to me!\u00a0 You wives of Lamech, hear my words! \u00a0I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for hurting me. \u00a0If Cain is to be avenged seven times as much, then Lamech seventy-seven times!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The upshot of this <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+5:13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">relatively unhindered<\/a> visiting of fathers\u2019 iniquity upon the sons was: <em>The earth was ruined in the sight of God; the earth was filled with violence<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>So God said to Noah, \u201cI have decided that all living creatures must die, for the earth is filled with violence because of them.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I began this portion of my study of fear to understand how the translators of the NET \u201carrived at <em>I punish<\/em> as a translation of the Hebrew word <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_punish\">p\u00e2qad<\/a> <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_p\u00e2qad\">\u05e4\u05e7\u05d3<\/a>)\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Deuteronomy+5:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deuteronomy 5:9<\/a>.\u00a0 If punishment could arrest this relatively unhindered visiting of fathers\u2019 iniquity upon the sons before it culminated in a death sentence for <em>all living creatures <\/em>it would be a welcome relief.\u00a0 This brings me to the third occurrence of \u05d5\u05d0\u05e4\u05e7\u05d3 (<em>p\u00e2qad<\/em>) translated <em>punish <\/em>or <em>punishment <\/em>(<em>and I have brought the punishment<\/em>) in the NET (Leviticus 18:25 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Therefore the land has become unclean and I have brought the punishment for its iniquity upon it, so that the land has vomited out its inhabitants.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This was not a reference to the violence of the antediluvian world but to the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Leviticus+18:24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">worship\/sexual practices<\/a> of the inhabitants of Canaan before Israel entered the promised land.\u00a0 But first I need to consider whether the visiting of the fathers\u2019 iniquity upon the sons was quite as unhindered as I have imagined it.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_materialism\"><\/a>I was born and raised in the latter half of the twentieth century near the northern edge of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bible_Belt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bible belt<\/a> in the United States of America.\u00a0 I am a hardcore materialist with some Jesus jelly smeared on top.\u00a0 I acknowledge this to <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Leviticus+26:40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">confess<\/a> the iniquity of my fathers, not to blame them or excuse myself, but to begin to claim my freedom from my own acceptance of that iniquity as my truth.<\/p>\n<p><em>The voice of your brother\u2019s blood is crying out to me from the ground <\/em>(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u0103d\u00e2m\u00e2h\">\u02bc\u0103d\u00e2m\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>)<em>!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>told Cain.\u00a0 I hear this as a poetic reference to <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>omniscience (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Psalms+139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psalm 139:1-12<\/a>).\u00a0 These days I\u2019m not unwilling to take it literally, that Abel\u2019s blood had a <em>voice<\/em> that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>could hear crying out from the ground, but it\u2019s not natural to me.\u00a0 I am the dark side of, <em>Train a child in the way that he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Still, opening myself to its possibility gives me a different perspective.<\/p>\n<p><em>So now, you are banished<\/em> (<em>\u02bc\u00e2rar<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u00e2rar\">\u05d0\u05e8\u05d5\u05e8<\/a>) <em>from the ground <\/em>(<em>\u02bc\u0103d\u00e2m\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05de\u05d4: NET footnote <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+4:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">28<\/a>): <em>Heb<\/em> \u201ccursed are you from the ground\u201d), <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>continued, <em>which has opened its mouth to receive your brother\u2019s blood from your hand <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/#_Table51\">Table<\/a>]<em>. \u00a0When you try to cultivate the ground <\/em>(<em>\u02bc\u0103d\u00e2m\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05de\u05d4) <em>it will no longer yield its best for you. \u00a0You will be a homeless wanderer on the earth <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/#_Table53\">Table<\/a>].<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 To Adam He had already said, <em>cursed <\/em>(<em>\u02bc\u00e2rar<\/em>, \u05d0\u05e8\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4) <em>is the ground <\/em>(<em>\u02bc\u0103d\u00e2m\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05de\u05d4) <em>thanks to you; in painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. \u00a0It will produce thorns and thistles for you, but you will eat the grain of the field. \u00a0By the sweat of your brow you will eat food until you return to the ground <\/em>(<em>\u02bc\u0103d\u00e2m\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05de\u05d4)<em>, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you will return<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I can begin to accept these as revelation of the very nature of the ground created by a loving, gracious and holy God, how the earth itself responds to its sinful inhabitants, rather than as post hoc <em>punishments <\/em>invented in the moment.\u00a0 And I can begin to see the nature of the earth, the ground we live on, as a deterrent to the unhindered visiting of the fathers\u2019 iniquity upon the sons.<\/p>\n<p>Cain couldn\u2019t supply himself with food by his own cultivation of the ground; the ground would <em>no longer yield its best for <\/em>him.\u00a0 Cain built a <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+4:17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">city<\/a>, a place where people could live in community and trade with one another for things they all needed.\u00a0 Did he honor those still righteous enough to cultivate the ground that would not yield its best to him?\u00a0 Did he learn from them?<\/p>\n<p>The text doesn\u2019t say.\u00a0 It says, <em>The earth <\/em>(<em>\u02bcerets<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bcerets\">\u05d4\u05d0\u05e8\u05e5<\/a>) <em>was ruined in the sight of God; the earth <\/em>(<em>\u02bcerets<\/em>, \u05d4\u05d0\u05e8\u05e5) <em>was filled with violence<\/em>.\u00a0 If I accept that the blood of victims has a voice that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>can hear crying out from the ground, crying out to Him to act, and multiply that by the increase of population over the many generations I can at least imagine the cacophony in his ears and begin to appreciate his choices (Genesis 6:6, 7 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Lord <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> regretted that he had made humankind on the earth <em>(<\/em>\u02bcerets<em>, \u05d1\u05d0\u05e8\u05e5)<\/em>, and he was highly offended. \u00a0So the Lord <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> said, \u201cI will wipe humankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth <em>(<\/em>\u02bc\u0103d\u00e2m\u00e2h<em>, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05de\u05d4)<\/em> \u2013 everything from humankind to animals, including creatures that move on the ground and birds of the air, for I regret that I have made them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_religion\"><\/a>The religious mind must sit quietly here to meditate that at this moment in history <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>preferred to destroy all life (air and ground) but that which could be saved in a boat and to start over again rather than to establish a law or a religion (aside from the rudiments of animal sacrifice handed down from Adam, Cain and Abel).\u00a0 One might say that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> <em>hated <\/em>law and religion, law and religion were <em>unloved <\/em>relative to starting over again with a remnant of the former world.\u00a0 But after the flood (Genesis 8:20-22 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Noah built an altar to the Lord <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05dc\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em>.\u00a0 He then took some of every kind of clean animal and clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. \u00a0And the Lord <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> smelled the soothing aroma and <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em> said to himself, \u201cI will never again curse the ground <em>(<\/em>\u02bc\u0103d\u00e2m\u00e2h<em>, \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05de\u05d4)<\/em> because of humankind, even though the inclination of their minds <em>(<\/em>l\u00eab<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_l\u00eab\">\u05dc\u05d1<\/a>)<\/em> is evil from childhood on. \u00a0I will never again destroy everything that lives, as I have just done. \u00a0While the earth continues to exist, planting time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night will not cease.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_law\"><\/a>God (<em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd) spoke one law to address violence, <em>\u201cWhoever sheds human blood, by other humans must his blood be shed; for in God\u2019s image God<\/em> (<em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd) <em>has made humankind\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a> and one <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+2:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">revised<\/a> dietary law: <em>Everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea are under your authority. \u00a0You may eat any moving thing that lives. \u00a0As I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0I assume that the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+2:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">trees<\/a> of life and of the knowledge of good and evil did not survive the flood and had become a nonissue (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+3:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis 3:22<\/a>).\u00a0 But in Leviticus <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>was establishing both a law and a religion in clear contrast to those originated by men.\u00a0 Now that will have to wait for another essay.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_curse\"><\/a>In my first draft of this essay I had hoped to avoid Noah\u2019s curse: <em>Cursed <\/em>(<em>\u02bc\u00e2rar<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u00e2rar\">\u05d0\u05e8\u05d5\u05e8<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/9\/25\/t_bibles_9025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <em>be Canaan!<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0But I couldn\u2019t get away with it.\u00a0 And I have to admit it is more germane than I want it to be.\u00a0 If Noah&#8217;s story (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+9:20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis 9:20-27<\/a>) were about almost anyone else we would take it simply as James\u2019 source text (James 3:7-12 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For every kind of animal, bird, reptile, and sea creature is subdued and has been subdued by <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+9:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">humankind<\/a>. \u00a0But no human being can subdue the tongue; it is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. \u00a0With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse <em>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03ce\u03bc\u03b5\u03b8\u03b1, a form of <a people made in <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+9:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">God\u2019s image<\/a>. \u00a0From the same mouth come blessing and cursing <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c1\u03b1\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c1\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0These things should not be so, my brothers and sisters. \u00a0A spring does not pour out fresh water and bitter water from the same opening, does it? \u00a0Can a fig tree produce olives, my brothers and sisters, or a vine produce figs? \u00a0Neither can a salt water spring produce fresh water.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But it was Noah, the heir of the world, who spoke this curse and this blessing so we are taught: \u201cGod&#8217;s blessing is going to rest directly on Shem, indirectly on Japheth, and His cursing is going to rest upon Ham&#8217;s son Canaan.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u201cSo Ham was cursed and Shem and Japheth were blessed in cooperative unity.\u00a0 The problem which must arise from the cursing of Canaan is this: Why did God curse Canaan for the sin of Ham? \u00a0Beyond this, why did God curse the Canaanites, a nation, for the sin of one man?\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The text is fairly clear that Noah not God spoke both the curse and the blessing.\u00a0 To this point Moses had been very explicit when <em>\u02bc\u0115l\u00f4h\u0131\u0302ym <\/em>or <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>spoke.\u00a0 Why do we want to believe that Noah spoke for Him here?<\/p>\n<p><em>Noah was a godly man; he was blameless<\/em> (<em>t\u00e2m\u0131\u0302ym<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_t\u00e2m\u0131\u0302ym\">\u05ea\u05de\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/6\/9\/t_bibles_6009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2\">\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <em>among his contemporaries.\u00a0 He walked with God<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Perhaps we want <em>t\u00e2m\u0131\u0302ym <\/em>to be an absolute term.\u00a0 But this was not Paul writing, <em>According to the righteousness stipulated in the law<\/em> [as understood by first century Pharisees] <em>I was blameless<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u1f04\u03bc\u03b5\u03bc\u03c0\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f04\u03bc\u03b5\u03bc\u03c0\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Noah was <em>blameless <\/em>(KJV: <em>perfect<\/em>) <em>among his contemporaries<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a> (<em>d\u00f4r<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_d\u00f4r\">\u05d1\u05d3\u05e8\u05ea\u05d9\u05d5<\/a>; Septuagint: <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03b5\u03ac\">\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03b5\u1fb7<\/a>), those condemned to death for their violence: <em>Every inclination of the thoughts of their minds was only evil all the time<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 About all one can say for sure about Noah is that he wasn\u2019t a <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+6:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">murderer<\/a> and perhaps not every <em>inclination of the thoughts of<\/em> [his mind] <em>was only evil all the time<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>God said to Noah, <em>Make for yourself an ark of cypress wood.\u00a0 Make rooms in the ark, and cover it with pitch inside and out<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>And Noah did all that God commanded him \u2013 he did indeed<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Through his faithfulness Noah was declared a <em>herald of righteousness<\/em>: <em>and if<\/em> [God] <em>did not spare the ancient world, but did protect Noah, a herald of righteousness, along with seven others, when God brought a flood on an ungodly world<\/em>\u2026<em>then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from their trials, and to reserve the unrighteous for punishment at the day of judgment<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>By faith Noah, when he was warned about things not yet seen, with reverent regard constructed an ark for the deliverance of his family. \u00a0Through faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>But Noah found favor<\/em> (<em>ch\u00ean<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_ch\u00ean\">\u05d7\u05df<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/6\/8\/t_bibles_6008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>) <em>in the sight of the Lord<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn26\"><sup>[26]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As followers of Jesus it is more prudent to believe that Noah\u2019s faithfulness was on account of <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>grace rather than due to some inherent quality of Noah\u2019s: <em>Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn27\"><sup>[27]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<strong><em>There is no one righteous<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>not even one<\/strong><\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn28\"><sup>[28]<\/sup><\/a> [i.e., in and of himself] <strong><em>there is no one who shows kindness<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>not even one<\/strong><\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn29\"><sup>[29]<\/sup><\/a> Paul quoted the Psalm of David (Psalm 14:2, 3 Tanakh):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.\u00a0 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Mark+10:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">none that doeth good<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+6:43\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no, not one<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 assessment of Noah and of the entire Old Testament is very helpful here: <em>Do not be amazed that I said to you, \u2018You must all be born from above.\u2019<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn30\"><sup>[30]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Noah didn\u2019t miraculously escape the corruption of the flesh of Adam.\u00a0 Noah didn\u2019t speak for God unless the text had said that Noah spoke the word of God.<\/p>\n<p>Noah\u2019s \u201cwords came to pass, so we believe he was inspired by God.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn31\"><sup>[31]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I know of no place in Scripture where it is written, \u201cthis took place to fulfill Noah\u2019s prophecy.\u201d\u00a0 Generations of Bible expositors would surely have quoted it if they had found it, so the contention that Noah\u2019s curse and blessing \u201ccame to pass\u201d is in the eye of the beholder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe act of Ham could not go unpunished. \u00a0In the curse of Noah upon Canaan, he was not punishing him personally for something his father Ham had done. \u00a0The words of Noah refer not to Canaan himself, but to the nation that would come from him\u2026Though we are not told the exact sin of Ham, we do know that it was reprehensible enough for God to curse the line of his son Canaan. \u00a0The judgment was not directed to Canaan personally but rather to his descendants.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn32\"><sup>[32]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As prophecies go, then\u2014and the Scriptures do not record that Canaan himself was ever enslaved <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+9:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to his brothers<\/a><\/em>\u2014one <em>need not fear<\/em> Noah as a prophet (Deuteronomy 18:21, 22 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNow if you say to yourselves, \u2018How can we tell that a message is not from the Lord?\u2019 \u2013 whenever a prophet speaks in my name and the prediction is not fulfilled, then I have not spoken it; the prophet has presumed to speak it, so you need not fear him.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cNoah\u2019s words did come to pass in the future, as we read that many of Canaan\u2019s descendants were either killed or put under tribute by Israel (descendants of Shem) during the times of Joshua and the Judges, and later by King Solomon.\u201d\u00a0 God\u2019s words will come to pass but the simple fact that a man\u2019s words come to pass doesn\u2019t make them God\u2019s words (Deuteronomy 13:1-4 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Suppose a prophet or one who foretells by dreams should appear among you and show you a sign or wonder, and the sign or wonder should come to pass concerning what he said to you, namely, \u201cLet us follow other gods\u201d \u2013 gods whom you have not previously known \u2013 \u201cand let us serve them.\u201d \u00a0You must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer, for the Lord your God will be testing you to see if you love him with all your mind and being. \u00a0You must follow the Lord your God and revere only him; and you must observe his commandments, obey him, serve him, and remain loyal to him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m not accusing Noah of being a false prophet.\u00a0 I\u2019m not accusing Noah of being any kind of prophet at all.\u00a0 If I\u2019m accusing Noah of anything it is that he spoke angrily, self-righteously, with a hangover.\u00a0 But what I must believe about God to believe that He cursed a nation of people for something a man did many generations before those people were even born is a very different god than the One I am knowing through the Scriptures.<\/p>\n<p>I concede that one who believes this is God because \u201cmany of Canaan\u2019s descendants were either killed or put under tribute by Israel (descendants of Shem) during the times of Joshua and the Judges, and later by King Solomon\u201d may also believe that He will<em> punish the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons for the sin of the fathers who reject <\/em>(<em>\u015b\u00e2n\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u015b\u00e2n\u00ea\u02bc\">\u05dc\u05e9\u05c1\u05e0\u05d0\u05d9<\/a>)<em> me<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn33\"><sup>[33]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Still, I hope that one may be willing to concede that Noah\u2019s curse was not the love that <em>does no wrong to a neighbor<\/em>, not the love that <em>is the fulfillment of the law<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn34\"><sup>[34]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While I don&#8217;t believe that Noah&#8217;s curse, or his blessing, were the immutable Word of God I do think his curse is a terrifying example of God visiting Noah&#8217;s iniquity upon Canaan, terrifying precisely because the effect of Noah&#8217;s iniquity<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_ftn35\"><sup>[35]<\/sup><\/a> has seemed so sure and certain that so many have assumed it was divine prophecy.\u00a0 We&#8217;re not told how Canaan reacted to Noah&#8217;s curse.\u00a0 I know how I would <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/01\/03\/torture-part-2\/#_curse\">react<\/a> to Noah&#8217;s &#8220;godliness,&#8221; &#8220;blamelessness,&#8221; and his &#8220;walk&#8221; with God unless I were willing to forgive him for his drunken rant.\u00a0 And I know that Canaan&#8217;s descendants practiced a <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Leviticus+18:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">law and religion<\/a> inimical to\u00a0<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll return to Leviticus 18 in another essay.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><a Here, where it is qualified by \u201chis\u201d (i.e., Noah\u2019s), it refers to Noah\u2019s contemporaries, comprised of the preceding generation (his father\u2019s generation), those of Noah\u2019s generation, and the next generation (those the same age as his children). In other words, \u201chis generations\u201d means the generations contemporary with him.
