Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I bogged down in this <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/\">study<\/a> a couple of years ago.\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember whether I balked at how much work it would be or simply recognized the futility of studying <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bd\u00e2bar\">\u02bd\u00e2bar<\/a> <\/em>alone.\u00a0 I\u2019ll start again comparing and contrasting <em>\u02bd\u00e2bar <\/em>with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_n\u00e2\u015b\u00e2\u02bc\">n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The translators of the Septuagint chose twenty-two different Greek words for fifty-four occurrences of\u00a0<em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h\u00a0<\/em>(only fifty-three were actually translated) from Genesis 4:13 through Exodus 19:4 (see <a href=\"#_table1\">table<\/a> below).\u00a0 They worked very hard to refine and communicate their own understanding in Greek, which only served to obscure\u00a0<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>mind if I fail to recognize the one Hebrew word\u2014<em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>\u2014behind all that refinement.<\/p>\n<p>The most concrete meaning of <em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h <\/em>is <em>to bear<\/em>, to <em>lift <\/em>or <em>carry<\/em>.\u00a0 Both <em>lift <\/em>and <em>carry <\/em>are evident in: <em>And the people took<\/em> (<em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1\u05d0; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/exo\/12\/34\/t_bibles_62034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f00\u03bd\u03ad\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>their dough before it was leavened, their kneading-troughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/11\/22\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-3\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But neither <em>took <\/em>nor \u1f00\u03bd\u03ad\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u03bd fully convey the idea of lifting and carrying if I don\u2019t already know <em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>What was important to the translators was that the people<em> took <\/em>their dough with them<em> before <\/em>it was leavened.\u00a0 Intended as a corrective, perhaps, even that added emphasis didn\u2019t prevent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2016\/12\/04\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-4\/#_unleavened\">religious minds<\/a> from imbuing unleavened bread with <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+13:33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spiritual significance<\/a> beyond the haste of Israel\u2019s exodus from Egypt (1 Corinthians 5:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#_Table8\">7<\/a>, 8 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote26sym\">Clean out<\/a> the old yeast so that you may be a new batch of dough \u2013 you are, in fact, without yeast.\u00a0 For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote27sym\">sacrificed<\/a>. \u00a0So then, let us celebrate the festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of vice and evil, but with the bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The concrete meaning of <em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h <\/em>prevailed in the phrase <em>lift up<\/em> one\u2019s eyes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+13%3A10&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis 13:10<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+13%3A14&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">14<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+18%3A2&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">18:2<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+22%3A4&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">22:4<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+22%3A13&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">13<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+24%3A63&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">24:63<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+24%3A64&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">64<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+31%3A10&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">31:10<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+31%3A12&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">12<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+33%3A1&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">33:1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+33%3A5&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+37%3A25&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">37:25<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+43%3A29&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">43:29<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+14%3A10&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exodus 14:10<\/a>).\u00a0 It was a bit more abstract in <em>lift up<\/em> one\u2019s voice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+21%3A16&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis 21:16<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+27%3A38&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">27:38<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+29%3A11&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">29:11<\/a>) or <em>lift up<\/em> one\u2019s feet (<a href=\"http:\/\/ccat.sas.upenn.edu\/nets\/edition\/01-gen-nets.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis 29:1<\/a>).\u00a0 While <em>I lifted up My hand<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/11\/22\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-3\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> was translated concretely in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/shemot-exodus-chapter-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanakh<\/a>, it was translated <em>I swore<\/em> in the NET and <em>I did swear<\/em> in the KJV.\u00a0 I want to keep these variations in mind as I consider six occurrences translated <em>forgive <\/em>or <em>forgiven<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The relatively contemporary translators of the Tanakh, the KJV and the NET all agreed that Cain was not spiritually aware enough to lament his <em>iniquity<\/em>: <em>My punishment is greater than I can bear<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/11\/22\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-3\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> (NET: <em>too great to endure<\/em>), he said in these translations.\u00a0 The more ancient translators of the Septuagint translated <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n\">\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ait.html#aitia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b1\u1f30\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a> and <em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>\u00a0\u1f00\u03c6\u03b5\u03b8\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03af (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9\">\u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>)\u00a0which a relatively contemporary translator rendered <em>My guilt is too great for me to be <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+9:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forgiven<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/11\/22\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-3\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> in English.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_lawfully\"><\/a>Of the five occurrences of <em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n <\/em>in Genesis 4:13 through Exodus 20:5 (see <a href=\"#_table2\">table<\/a> below) one was translated \u03b1\u1f30\u03c4\u03af\u03b1, one \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1\u03bd (a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1\">\u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), one \u1f00\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03af\u03b1\u03b9\u03c2 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f00\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03af\u03b1\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)\u00a0and two with forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>.\u00a0 The most concrete meaning of forms of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1 is found in its verb form <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>, \u201cto miss the mark.\u201d\u00a0 In the occurrence translated \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\u03b9 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/15\/16\/t_bibles_15016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis 15:16<\/a>) before Exodus 20, what mark was missed before the law was given?\u00a0 <em>I would not have known sin<\/em> (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1), Paul wrote believers in Rome, <em>except through the law<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/11\/22\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-3\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>But <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/16\/romans-part-26\/#_personification\">sin<\/a> <\/em>(\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1), <em>seizing the opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of wrong desires<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/11\/22\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-3\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve questioned the idea of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1 <em>seizing the opportunity through the commandment <\/em> in the context of Cain&#8217;s murder of his brother Abel.\u00a0 But if the NET translation of Genesis 4:7b (see comparison below) is more correct than that of the <a id=\"_Abel\"><\/a>Septuagint (namely, that Cain would rule again over Abel if Cain offered the correct sacrifice), then\u00a0<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>words,\u00a0<em>you must subdue<\/em> sin (<em>cha\u1e6d\u1e6d\u00e2\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_cha\u1e6d\u1e6d\u00e2\u02bc\u00e2h\">\u05d7\u05d8\u05d0\u05ea<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/4\/7\/t_bibles_4007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f25\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>), would serve as the commandment \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1 seized, <em>for before the law was given, sin <\/em>(\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1) <em>was in the world, but there is no accounting for sin <\/em>(\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1) <em>when there is no law<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/11\/22\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-3\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: translators of the Septuagint seemed to acknowledge a problem with \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1 prior to the law with the word \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1\u03bd: <em>G-d hath found out the iniquity<\/em> (<em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/em>, \u05e2\u05d5\u05df; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/44\/16\/t_bibles_44016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1\u03bd; NETS: <em>injustice; <\/em>NET: <em>the sin<\/em>) <em>of thy servants<\/em>&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/11\/22\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-3\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The <em>iniquity <\/em>that concerned Joseph\u2019s brothers wasn&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Exodus+20:15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stealing<\/a>\u00a0his <em>silver goblet<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/bereishit-genesis-chapter-44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">44:2<\/a>).\u00a0 They knew Benjamin hadn\u2019t taken it but suspected (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+43:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis 43:18-23<\/a>) that it had been placed there by the Egyptian\u2019s (e.g., Joseph\u2019s) servant to entrap them.\u00a0 They had reasoned that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> was behind their difficulties with the Egyptian and that their <em>iniquity <\/em>was their <em>injustice <\/em>toward their younger brother Joseph (Genesis 42:21-23 Tanakh):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And they said one to another: &#8216;We are verily guilty <em>(<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2sh\u00eam<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bc\u00e2sh\u00eam\">\u05d0\u05e9\u05de\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/42\/21\/t_bibles_42021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f10\u03bd\">\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u1fb3)<\/em> concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear <em>(<\/em>sh\u00e2ma\u02bd<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_sh\u00e2ma\u02bd\">\u05e9\u05de\u05e2\u05e0\u05d5<\/a>)<\/em>; therefore is this distress come upon us.&#8217;\u00a0 And Reuben answered them, saying: &#8216;Spoke I not unto you, saying: Do not sin <em>(<\/em>ch\u00e2\u1e6d\u00e2\u02bc<em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+37:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">father\u2019s favorite<\/a>.\u00a0 And I realize here that I am regarding <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancient-hebrew.org\/emagazine\/056.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iniquity<\/a> <\/em>(<em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/em>) more like Jesus&#8217; and Paul&#8217;s description of the <em>flesh <\/em>than like a <em>sin<\/em>, a missing of a mark.\u00a0 <em>What is born of the flesh<\/em> (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+3:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forbearance<\/a> on <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>part, and to stress that it is only part, a very necessary part, of the forgiveness I hope for from Him.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph\u2019s brothers sought the same forbearance from Joseph after Jacob\u2019s death: <em>\u201cWhat if Joseph bears a grudge and wants to repay us in full for all the harm we did to him?\u201d<\/em><a
