I bogged down in this study<\/a> a couple of years ago.\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember whether I balked at how much work it would be or simply recognized the futility of studying \u02bd\u00e2bar<\/a> <\/em>alone.\u00a0 I\u2019ll start again comparing and contrasting \u02bd\u00e2bar <\/em>with n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

The translators of the Septuagint chose twenty-two different Greek words for fifty-four occurrences of\u00a0n\u00e2s\u00e2h\u00a0<\/em>(only fifty-three were actually translated) from Genesis 4:13 through Exodus 19:4 (see table<\/a> below).\u00a0 They worked very hard to refine and communicate their own understanding in Greek, which only served to obscure\u00a0ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h’s\u00a0<\/em>mind if I fail to recognize the one Hebrew word\u2014n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>\u2014behind all that refinement.<\/p>\n

The most concrete meaning of n\u00e2s\u00e2h <\/em>is to bear<\/em>, to lift <\/em>or carry<\/em>.\u00a0 Both lift <\/em>and carry <\/em>are evident in: And the people took<\/em> (n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1\u05d0; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f00\u03bd\u03ad\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) their dough before it was leavened, their kneading-troughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders<\/em>.[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But neither took <\/em>nor \u1f00\u03bd\u03ad\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u03bd fully convey the idea of lifting and carrying if I don\u2019t already know n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What was important to the translators was that the people took <\/em>their dough with them before <\/em>it was leavened.\u00a0 Intended as a corrective, perhaps, even that added emphasis didn\u2019t prevent\u00a0religious minds<\/a> from imbuing unleavened bread with spiritual significance<\/a> beyond the haste of Israel\u2019s exodus from Egypt (1 Corinthians 5:7<\/a>, 8 NET):<\/p>\n

Clean out<\/a> the old yeast so that you may be a new batch of dough \u2013 you are, in fact, without yeast.\u00a0 For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed<\/a>. \u00a0So then, let us celebrate the festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of vice and evil, but with the bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The concrete meaning of n\u00e2s\u00e2h <\/em>prevailed in the phrase lift up<\/em> one\u2019s eyes (Genesis 13:10<\/a>, 14<\/a>; 18:2<\/a>; 22:4<\/a>, 13<\/a>; 24:63<\/a>, 64<\/a>; 31:10<\/a>, 12<\/a>; 33:1<\/a>, 5<\/a>; 37:25<\/a>; 43:29<\/a>; Exodus 14:10<\/a>).\u00a0 It was a bit more abstract in lift up<\/em> one\u2019s voice (Genesis 21:16<\/a>; 27:38<\/a>; 29:11<\/a>) or lift up<\/em> one\u2019s feet (Genesis 29:1<\/a>).\u00a0 While I lifted up My hand<\/em>[2]<\/sup><\/a> was translated concretely in the Tanakh<\/a>, it was translated I swore<\/em> in the NET and I did swear<\/em> in the KJV.\u00a0 I want to keep these variations in mind as I consider six occurrences translated forgive <\/em>or forgiven<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The relatively contemporary translators of the Tanakh, the KJV and the NET all agreed that Cain was not spiritually aware enough to lament his iniquity<\/em>: My punishment is greater than I can bear<\/em>[3]<\/sup><\/a> (NET: too great to endure<\/em>), he said in these translations.\u00a0 The more ancient translators of the Septuagint translated \u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/a><\/em> \u03b1\u1f30\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a> and n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>\u00a0\u1f00\u03c6\u03b5\u03b8\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03af (a form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>)\u00a0which a relatively contemporary translator rendered My guilt is too great for me to be forgiven<\/a><\/em>[4]<\/sup><\/a> in English.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Of the five occurrences of \u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n <\/em>in Genesis 4:13 through Exodus 20:5 (see table<\/a> below) one was translated \u03b1\u1f30\u03c4\u03af\u03b1, one \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1\u03bd (a form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), one \u1f00\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03af\u03b1\u03b9\u03c2 (a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)\u00a0and two with forms of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>.\u00a0 The most concrete meaning of forms of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1 is found in its verb form \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>, \u201cto miss the mark.\u201d\u00a0 In the occurrence translated \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\u03b9 (Genesis 15:16<\/a>) before Exodus 20, what mark was missed before the law was given?\u00a0 I would not have known sin<\/em> (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1), Paul wrote believers in Rome, except through the law<\/em>.[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But sin<\/a> <\/em>(\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1), seizing the opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of wrong desires<\/em>.[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I’ve questioned the idea of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1 seizing the opportunity through the commandment <\/em> in the context of Cain’s murder of his brother Abel.\u00a0 But if the NET translation of Genesis 4:7b (see comparison below) is more correct than that of the <\/a>Septuagint (namely, that Cain would rule again over Abel if Cain offered the correct sacrifice), then\u00a0ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h’s\u00a0<\/em>words,\u00a0you must subdue<\/em> sin (cha\u1e6d\u1e6d\u00e2\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d7\u05d8\u05d0\u05ea<\/a>; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f25\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2, a form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>), would serve as the commandment \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1 seized, for before the law was given, sin <\/em>(\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1) was in the world, but there is no accounting for sin <\/em>(\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1) when there is no law<\/em>.[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The translators of the Septuagint seemed to acknowledge a problem with \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1 prior to the law with the word \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1\u03bd: G-d hath found out the iniquity<\/em> (\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/em>, \u05e2\u05d5\u05df; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1\u03bd; NETS: injustice; <\/em>NET: the sin<\/em>) of thy servants<\/em>…[8]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The iniquity <\/em>that concerned Joseph\u2019s brothers wasn’t stealing<\/a>\u00a0his silver goblet<\/em> (44:2<\/a>).\u00a0 They knew Benjamin hadn\u2019t taken it but suspected (Genesis 43:18-23<\/a>) that it had been placed there by the Egyptian\u2019s (e.g., Joseph\u2019s) servant to entrap them.\u00a0 They had reasoned that ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> was behind their difficulties with the Egyptian and that their iniquity <\/em>was their injustice <\/em>toward their younger brother Joseph (Genesis 42:21-23 Tanakh):<\/p>\n

And they said one to another: ‘We are verily guilty (<\/em>\u02bc\u00e2sh\u00eam, \u05d0\u05e9\u05de\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u1fb3)<\/em> concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear (<\/em>sh\u00e2ma\u02bd, \u05e9\u05de\u05e2\u05e0\u05d5<\/a>)<\/em>; therefore is this distress come upon us.’\u00a0 And Reuben answered them, saying: ‘Spoke I not unto you, saying: Do not sin (<\/em>ch\u00e2\u1e6d\u00e2\u02bc, \u05ea\u05d7\u05d8\u05d0\u05d5<\/a>; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5, a form of \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> against the child; and ye would not hear (<\/em>sh\u00e2ma\u02bd, \u05e9\u05de\u05e2\u05ea\u05dd)<\/em>? therefore also, behold, his blood is required.’\u00a0 And they knew not that Joseph understood (<\/em>sh\u00e2ma\u02bd, \u05e9\u05de\u05e2) <\/em>them; for the interpreter was between them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They had not disobeyed a law: Thou shalt not sell thy brother into slavery.\u00a0 But they had not dealt justly with their little brother, whether a tattletale<\/a>, a braggart (Genesis 37:5-11<\/a>) or a father\u2019s favorite<\/a>.\u00a0 And I realize here that I am regarding iniquity<\/a> <\/em>(\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/em>) more like Jesus’ and Paul’s description of the flesh <\/em>than like a sin<\/em>, a missing of a mark.\u00a0 What is born of the flesh<\/em> (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be<\/a>) is flesh<\/em> (\u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be), Jesus said, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit<\/em>.[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For when we were in the flesh<\/em> (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03af, another form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be), Paul wrote believers in Rome, the sinful desires, aroused by the law, were active in the members of our body to bear fruit for death<\/em>.[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul continued (Romans 8:5-8 NET):<\/p>\n

For those who live according to the flesh (\u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03ba\u03b1, another form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be)<\/em> have their outlook shaped by the things of the flesh (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be)<\/em>, but those who live according to the Spirit have their outlook shaped by the things of the Spirit. \u00a0For the outlook of the flesh (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be)<\/em> is death, but the outlook of the Spirit is life and peace, because the outlook of the flesh (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be)<\/em> is hostile to God, for it does not submit to the law of God, nor is it able to do so. \u00a0Those who are in the flesh (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03af, another form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be)<\/em> cannot please (\u1f00\u03c1\u03ad\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> \u03bf\u1f50 \u03b4\u03cd\u03bd\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great<\/em>, ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>told Abraham, and their sin<\/em> (cha\u1e6d\u1e6d\u00e2\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d5\u05d7\u05d8\u05d0\u05ea\u05dd; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\u03b9, another form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1) so blatant that I must go down and see if they are as wicked as the outcry suggests. \u00a0If not, I want to know<\/em>.[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Will you sweep away the godly along with the wicked?<\/em> Abraham asked. \u00a0What if there are fifty godly people in the city?\u00a0 Will you really wipe it out and not spare<\/em> (n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05ea\u05e9\u05c1\u05d0) the place for the sake of the fifty godly people who are in it?<\/em>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

In the Tanakh n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em> was translated forgive <\/em>rather than spare<\/em>.\u00a0 In the Septuagint it was translated \u1f00\u03bd\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2 (a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) which was translated go free<\/a> <\/em>in the NETS.\u00a0 Abraham asked ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>to bear the sin <\/em>(cha\u1e6d\u1e6d\u00e2\u02bc\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d5\u05d7\u05d8\u05d0\u05ea\u05dd) of the majority of the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah for the sake of fifty hypothetical godly <\/em>(tsadd\u0131\u0302yq<\/em>, \u05e6\u05d3\u05d9\u05e7\u05dd<\/a>; Septuagint<\/a>: \u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03b9, a form of \u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>; Tanakh, KJV, NETS: righteous<\/em>) people who may or may not reside there, then forty-five, forty, thirty, twenty and ten.\u00a0 And ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>\u00a0agreed<\/a> to Abraham\u2019s proposition: If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will forgive <\/em>(n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d5\u05e0\u05e9\u05c1\u05d0\u05ea\u05d9; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f00\u03c6\u03ae\u03c3\u03c9, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9; NETS: I will<\/em> forgive<\/em>; KJV, NET: I will spare<\/em>) all the place for their sake<\/em>.[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t mean to imply that forgive <\/em>was a bad translation of n\u00e2s\u00e2h <\/em>here.\u00a0 I do intend to highlight the nature of this forgiveness <\/em>as primarily forbearance<\/a> on ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/em>part, and to stress that it is only part, a very necessary part, of the forgiveness I hope for from Him.<\/p>\n

Joseph\u2019s brothers sought the same forbearance from Joseph after Jacob\u2019s death: \u201cWhat if Joseph bears a grudge and wants to repay us in full for all the harm we did to him?\u201d<\/em>[14]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0So they sent word to Joseph, saying<\/em> (Genesis 50:16, 17a NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father gave these instructions before he died: \u2018Tell Joseph this: Please forgive (<\/em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h, \u05e9\u05c1\u05d0; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c2, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9; Tanakh, KJV, NETS: <\/em>forgive)<\/em> the sin of your brothers and the wrong they did when they treated you so badly.\u2019 \u00a0Now please forgive (<\/em>n\u00e2s\u00e2h, \u05e9\u05c1\u05d0; Septuagint<\/a>: \u03b4\u03ad\u03be\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03b4\u03ad\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>; Tanakh, KJV: <\/em>forgive; NETS: <\/em>accept)<\/em> the sin of the servants of the God of your father.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Though they asked for forbearance I think one could argue that they received so much more (Genesis 50:19-21 NET):<\/p>\n

But Joseph answered them, \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid. \u00a0Am I in the place of God? \u00a0As for you, you meant to harm me, but God intended it for a good purpose, so he could preserve the lives of many people, as you can see this day. \u00a0So now, don\u2019t be afraid. \u00a0I will provide for you and your little children.\u201d \u00a0Then he consoled them and spoke kindly to them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Pharoah asked for a similar forbearance: Then Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, \u201cI have sinned against the Lord your God and against you! \u00a0So now, forgive<\/em> (n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05e9\u05c1\u05d0; Septuagint<\/a>: \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b4\u03ad\u03be\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b4\u03ad\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>; Tanakh, KJV: forgive<\/em>; NETS: bear<\/em>) my sin this time only, and pray to the Lord your God that he would only take this death away from me.\u201d<\/em>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Moses extended his staff over the land of Egypt, and then the Lord brought an east wind on the land all that day and all night. \u00a0The morning came, and the east wind had brought up<\/em> (n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05e0\u05e9\u05c1\u05d0) the locusts!<\/em>[16]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The death <\/em>(m\u00e2veth<\/em>, \u05d4\u05de\u05d5\u05ea<\/a>) Pharaoh asked Moses to pray that ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>would take<\/em>\u2026away <\/em>was those locusts:\u00a0Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord, and the Lord turned a very strong west wind, and it picked up<\/em> (n\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d5\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1\u05d0) the locusts and blew them into the Red Sea. \u00a0Not one locust remained in all the territory of Egypt<\/em>.[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

No matter what I think of Cain\u2019s spiritual competence<\/a>, The Lord <\/em>(ye<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a>) would speak to Moses face to face, the way a person speaks to a friend<\/em>.[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Moses wrote the words we read in Genesis.\u00a0 With the first occurrences of both \u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n <\/em>and n\u00e2s\u00e2h <\/em>a son of Adam spoke words that may legitimately be translated, \u201cmy iniquity is greater than I can bear.\u201d[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 That sounds like something I can work with as I continue this study.<\/p>\n

I found no occurrence of \u02bd\u00e2bar<\/em> in this section (Genesis 1:1 – Exodus 20:5) that was, or should have been, translated forgive <\/em>(see table<\/a> below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
