Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all1<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>together2<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>in one place. \u00a0Suddenly a sound like a violent wind blowing came from heaven and filled (\u1f10\u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03c1\u03c9\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>the entire house where they were sitting. \u00a0And tongues spreading out like a fire appeared to them and came to rest on3<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>each one of them. \u00a0All4<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>of them were filled (\u1f10\u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.<\/p>\n

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven residing in5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>Jerusalem. \u00a0When this sound occurred, a crowd (\u03c0\u03bb\u1fc6\u03b8\u03bf\u03c2<\/a><\/em>)<\/em> gathered and was in confusion, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. \u00a0Completely6<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>baffled, they said,7<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u201cAren\u2019t8<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>all9<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>these who are speaking Galileans? \u00a0And how is it that each one of us hears them in our own native language? \u00a0Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and the province of Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs \u2013 we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great deeds God has done!\u201d \u00a0All were astounded and greatly confused, saying to one another, \u201cWhat10<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>does this mean?\u201d11<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u00a0But others jeered12<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>at the speakers, saying, \u201cThey are drunk on new wine!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
