word \u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u1f79\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u00a0(a form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2) is only used this once in the New Testament, but it comes from the word <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sk.html#sklhros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>\u00a0(<em>dry<\/em>, <em>hard<\/em>, <em>tough<\/em>).\u00a0 In &#8220;The Parable of the Talents&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Matthew+25:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew 25:14-30<\/a>) the <em>evil and lazy slave<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> described his master as <em>a<\/em> <em>hard <\/em>(\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2) <em>man, harvesting where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus said, <em>I tell you the solemn truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in yourselves. \u00a0The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> <em>will raise him up on<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> <em>the last day. \u00a0For my flesh is true<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> <em>food, and my blood is <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote7sym\">true<\/a> drink. \u00a0The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood resides in me, and I in him<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 His own disciples responded, <em>This is a difficult<\/em> (\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2) <em>saying!\u00a0 Who can understand it?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Jesus\u2019 explanation is right on target for the study of Paul\u2019s letter to the Romans, <em>The <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/holy-spirit\/\">Spirit<\/a> is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help!\u00a0 The words that I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_ftn10\">have spoken<\/a> to you are spirit and are life<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Paul, recounting his own experience resisting repentance, told King Agrippa what Jesus had said to him on the Damascus road: <em>When we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic,<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><em> \u201cSaul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?\u00a0 You are hurting<\/em> (\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2) <em>yourself by kicking against the goads.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>James wrote about <em>harsh<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sk.html#sklhrwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2) <em>winds<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> and Jude about <em>harsh<\/em> (\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u1ff6\u03bd, a form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2) <em>words<\/em> (Jude 1:14, 15 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now Enoch, the seventh in descent beginning with Adam, even prophesied of them, saying, \u201cLook!\u00a0 The Lord is coming with thousands and thousands of his holy ones, to execute judgment <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krisin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>on all, and to convict <em>(<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ase.html#asebhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u03ae\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>sinners <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartwloi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c9\u03bb\u03bf\u1f76<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartwlos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c9\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>have spoken against him.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_day\"><\/a>This <em>day of wrath<\/em>, <em>when God\u2019s righteous judgment<\/em>\u00a0<em>is revealed<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> is the reason Paul said, <em>So then, do not judge <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krinete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krinw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)<em> anything before the time.\u00a0 Wait until the Lord comes.\u00a0 He will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the motives of hearts.\u00a0 Then each will receive recognition from God<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As far as an <em>unrepentant<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u1f79\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd, a form of \u1f00\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) <em>heart<\/em> is concerned, \u1f00\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2 is probably the negation of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03ad\u03c9, <em>to think differently<\/em>, <em>reconsider<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019ve already written about the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/\">righteous prayer<\/a> that justified (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ded.html#dedikaiwmenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c9\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) the tax collector who prayed it, <em>God, be merciful to me, sinner that I am!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0In the specific context of Paul\u2019s letter to the Romans it is not too difficult for a repentant heart to find itself in the wide net Paul cast in chapter 1:18-32.\u00a0 Anyone can pray, \u201cGod be merciful to me.\u00a0 I have been given over to a depraved mind because I did not see fit to acknowledge you.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Or, \u201cGod be merciful to me.\u00a0 I have been given over to dishonorable passions because I worshiped and served the creation rather than you.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Or, \u201cGod be merciful to me.\u00a0 I have been given over to impurity because I worshiped you as if you were a created thing.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t glorified you or given you thanks.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the context of Romans the real stubbornness (\u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u1f79\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1, a form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2) at this point would be to continue to assert one\u2019s own righteousness before God, to persist in the effort to make oneself righteous (whether that be according to his law or on one\u2019s own terms) rather than accept his mercy and grace.\u00a0 It is to this stubborn and unrepentant heart that Paul warns, <em>you are storing up wrath<\/em>\u00a0<em>for yourselves in the day of wrath<\/em>, <em>when God\u2019s righteous judgment<\/em>\u00a0<em>is revealed<\/em>!\u00a0 <em>He<\/em> <strong><em>will reward each one according to his works <\/em><\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#erga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd):<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>eternal life to those who by perseverance in good works seek glory and honor and immortality, but wrath and anger to those who live in selfish ambition and do not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/03\/28\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-2\/#_ftn21\">obey<\/a> the truth but follow\u00a0unrighteousness <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/03\/28\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-2\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0There will be affliction and distress on everyone who does evil, on the Jew first and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, for the Jew first and also the Greek. \u00a0For there is no partiality with God. \u00a0For all who have sinned apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#kriqhsontai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9)\u00a0<\/em>by the law.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/06\/romans-part-8\/#sdfootnote22sym\"
