Forgiveness, Part 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have some sympathy for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/\">Jephthah<\/a>.\u00a0 I could be Jephthah.\u00a0 I have that same drive to be right, or righteous, that at times owes as much or more to my ego than my faith in the righteousness that comes from God.\u00a0 I have that same philosophical, or legalistic, bent of mind.\u00a0 David wouldn\u2019t have killed his daughter, no matter what foolish oath he made.\u00a0 I could see that.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t always know how to be that.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, I wouldn\u2019t kill my daughter, not today.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t socialized in the time of the Judges of ancient Israel.\u00a0 If I started building an altar in my backyard and making preparations to sacrifice her, the neighbors would call the police.\u00a0 And my daughter wasn\u2019t socialized in the time of the Judges either.\u00a0 She wouldn\u2019t go willingly to death because I shot off my mouth once too often to God.\u00a0 You see, we were both socialized in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries in the United States of America.\u00a0 All human sacrifice has been banned here except for the sacrifice of unborn children, and that not to God but to a twisted human ideal of \u201cThe Good Life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I began to see, or maybe feel, something of a similarity between Jephthah\u2019s daughter who died and David\u2019s son who died.\u00a0 And I gave one of my imaginary accounts.\u00a0 I think they are imaginary.\u00a0 I certainly wouldn\u2019t say they are the word of God.\u00a0 It went something like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhat would you have me do, Dan?\u00a0 Should I have struck Jephthah with lightning?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNo! \u00a0He was doing the best he could, given who he was and what he understood.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThen why won\u2019t you consider him righteous?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe should have confessed that he\u2019d spoken foolishly out of turn and thrown himself on your mercy, like David would have done, not murder his daughter!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cJephthah lived a long time before David was born.\u00a0 Do you blame him for not knowing David?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNo!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou blame me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWell\u2026yes, you should have explained all this better before Jephthah faced this situation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTeach me, Dan, what law should I have written that would define the difference between David\u2019s contrite faith and Jephthah\u2019s egoism?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWell, uh, I mean, okay, obviously I don\u2019t know how to do that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTell me, Dan, what better way could I have gotten you, of all people, to begin to distinguish between your desire to be right and your desire for my righteousness than to recount the stories of David\u2019s and Jephthah\u2019s lives and let you wrestle with their significance?\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And so I am struck silent.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/17\/who-am-i-part-2\/#_Jesus\">Lord Jesus<\/a> is clearly not to blame for the death of Jephthah\u2019s daughter.\u00a0 I am\u2014hopefully not completely alone.\u00a0 But I am to blame in the sense that had I lived Jephthah\u2019s life in Jephthah\u2019s time and circumstances I, of all people, would have likely made the same mistakes.\u00a0 And I am also to blame in the sense that I can imagine little else than the death of Jephthah\u2019s daughter that might have gotten my attention enough to wrestle with these passages and learn that about myself.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to the Hebrews in the New Testament Jephthah is included along with David in the roll call of faith. \u00a0<em>Now faith is being sure <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upos.html#upostasis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f79\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<em> of what we hope for, being convinced <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ele.html#elegcos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03b3\u03c7\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<em> of what we do not see. \u00a0For by it the people of old received God\u2019s commendation<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 After describing the faith of Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua and Rahab the prostitute, the author continued, <em>And what more shall I say? \u00a0For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/31\/jephthah\/#sdfootnote4sym\">Barak<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/31\/jephthah\/#sdfootnote5sym\">Samson<\/a>, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Obviously Jephthah wasn\u2019t commended for sacrificing his daughter any more than Rahab was commended for prostitution.\u00a0 But both were remembered for their faith.\u00a0 It was a relative, not an absolute, faith, relative to the time and circumstances, the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/27\/davids-forgiveness-part-2\/\">socially constructed realities<\/a> they lived in.\u00a0 And their faith was credited as righteousness.\u00a0 <em>But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ase.html#asebh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u1fc6<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ase.html#asebhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u03ae\u03c2<\/a>) <em>righteous<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiounta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>)<em>, his faith is credited <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logizetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logizomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <em>as righteousness <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>)<em>.\u00a0 So even David<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <em>himself speaks regarding the blessedness of the man to whom God credits <\/em>(\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) <em>righteousness <\/em>(\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7) <em>apart from works:<\/em> \u201c<strong><em>Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/forgiveness\/\">forgiven<\/a>, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the one against whom<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> <em>the Lord will never count<\/em><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logishtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) <strong><em>sin <\/em><\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<em>.<\/em>\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The death of David\u2019s first son with Bathsheba has functioned for me in a similar way.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t have questioned my evaluation of the <em>events<\/em> that followed David\u2019s sin and the Lord\u2019s forgiveness as <em>punishments<\/em> if I hadn\u2019t questioned the justice of punishing David\u2019s son for David\u2019s sin.\u00a0 And I have to wonder if anything less would have broken through the perverted thinking of my <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/02\/romans-part-6\/\"><em>depraved mind<\/em><\/a> (Romans 1:28-32 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what should not be done. \u00a0They are filled with every kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/02\/romans-part-6\/#sdfootnote16sym\">unrighteousness<\/a>, wickedness, covetousness, malice.\u00a0 They are rife with envy, murder, strife, deceit, hostility.\u00a0 They are gossips <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/02\/romans-part-6\/#_Table21\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, contrivers of all sorts of evil, disobedient to parents, senseless, covenant-breakers, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/02\/romans-part-6\/#sdfootnote17sym\">heartless<\/a>, ruthless <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/02\/romans-part-6\/#_Table22\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Although they fully know God\u2019s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but also approve of those who practice them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If asked to judge the Lord Jesus for the deaths of these children, I, for one, will be compelled to declare them justifiable homicides.\u00a0 Against hope I believe in hope that God is not only the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, of David and Solomon, but of David\u2019s son and Jephthah\u2019s daughter.\u00a0 Paul wrote about this kind of faith and hope against a lifetime of evidence to the contrary.\u00a0 What makes it possible is faith in <em>the God who makes the dead alive and summons the things that do not yet exist as though they already do<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>Against hope Abraham believed in hope<\/em>\u2026<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Without being weak in faith, he considered<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>his own body as dead<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>(because he was about one hundred years old) and the deadness of Sarah\u2019s womb. \u00a0He did not waver in unbelief about the promise of God but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God. \u00a0He was fully convinced that what God promised he was also able to do.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The result for Abraham was <em>that he became<\/em> <strong><em>the<\/em> <em>father of many nations<\/em><\/strong> <em>according to the pronouncement,<\/em> \u201c<strong><em>so will your descendants be<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Imitating his faith I look forward to a timeless eternity when I can search out David\u2019s son and Jephthah\u2019s daughter, chat with them and thank them for the impact of their lives and deaths on my life, not to mention my death.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#sdfootnote11sym\"
