{"id":9409,"date":"2018-02-20T18:17:09","date_gmt":"2018-02-20T12:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=9409"},"modified":"2024-01-19T11:27:38","modified_gmt":"2024-01-19T17:27:38","slug":"atonement-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=9409","title":{"rendered":"Atonement, Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I plan to begin a slow pilgrimage through <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_k\u00e2phar\">k\u00e2phar<\/a><\/em>, which will at a minimum include surveying <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_k\u00f4pher\">k\u00f4pher<\/a> <\/em>and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_kipp\u00fbr\">kipp\u00fbr<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 The first occurrences of <em>k\u00e2phar <\/em>and <em>k\u00f4pher<\/em> according to Strong\u2019s Concordance are found in, <em>Make rooms in the ark, and cover<\/em> (<em>k\u00e2phar<\/em>, \u05d5\u05db\u05e4\u05e8\u05ea; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/gen\/6\/14\/t_bibles_6014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f00\u03c3\u03c6\u03b1\u03bb\u03c4\u03ce\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/asf.html#asfaltow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c3\u03c6\u03b1\u03bb\u03c4\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) <em>it with pitch<\/em> (<em>k\u00f4pher<\/em>, \u05d1\u05db\u05e4\u05e8: Septuagint: \u1f00\u03c3\u03c6\u03ac\u03bb\u03c4\u1ff3, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/asf.html#asfaltos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f04\u03c3\u03c6\u03b1\u03bb\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <em>inside and out<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But I\u2019m going to set that aside.<\/p>\n<p>The note (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Genesis+6:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">48<\/a>) in the NET reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Hebrew term \u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05e4\u05b8\u05e8 (<\/em>kafar<em>, \u201cto cover, to smear\u201d [= to caulk]) appears here in the Qal stem with its primary, nonmetaphorical meaning. The Piel form \u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05e4\u05b6\u05bc\u05e8 (<\/em>kipper<em>), which has the metaphorical meaning \u201cto atone, to expiate, to pacify,\u201d is used in Levitical texts (see HALOT 493-94 s.v. \u05db\u05e4\u05e8). Some authorities regard the form in v. 14 as a homonym of the much more common Levitical term (see BDB 498 s.v. \u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05e4\u05b8\u05e8).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think <em>homonym <\/em>was used here as I have used <em>homograph<\/em>:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> \u201ca word of the same written form as another but of different meaning and usually origin, whether pronounced the same way or not, as bear \u2018to carry; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Exodus+30:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">30:12<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Numbers+35:31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Numbers 35:31<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Numbers+35:32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">32<\/a> is a homograph for <em>k\u00e2phar <\/em>(\u05db\u05e4\u05e8) in Exodus 29:33 (NET): <em>They are to eat those things by which atonement<\/em> (<em>k\u00e2phar<\/em>, \u05db\u05e4\u05e8) <em>was made to consecrate and to set them apart, but no one else may eat them, for they are holy<\/em>.\u00a0 I am more than content to assume that the homographs translated, <em>and cover it with pitch<\/em>, have next to nothing to do with <em>atonement<\/em>.\u00a0 John <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/11\/29\/my-deeds-part-2\/\">wrote<\/a> (1 John <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/08\/19\/atonement-part-3\/#_Table1\">1:5-7<\/a> NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now this is the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/08\/19\/atonement-part-3\/#_ftn5\">gospel message<\/a> we have heard from him and announce to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. \u00a0If we say we have fellowship with him and yet keep on walking in the darkness, we are lying and not practicing the truth. \u00a0But if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/08\/19\/atonement-part-3\/#_ftn6\">Jesus<\/a> his Son cleanses us from all sin.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I can appreciate that something like asphalt smeared inside and outside of a wooden vessel that preserved people through a judgment of water bears a vague similarity to atonement that will preserve people through a judgment of fire (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/2+Peter+3:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Peter 3:5-7<\/a>).\u00a0 But <em>and cover it with pitch <\/em>sounds more like Achan burying <em>a nice robe from Babylon, two hundred silver pieces, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><em> in the ground right in the middle of<\/em> [his] <em>tent<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It sounds like David calling Uriah home from the front and saying, <em>\u201cGo down to your home and relax.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 When Uriah\u2019s loyalty to his comrades-in-arms proved <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/2+Samuel+11:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">such<\/a> that he was useless in David\u2019s attempt to cover his sin with pitch, the king sent him back to the front carrying a letter to his commanding officer that read: <em>\u201cStation Uriah in the thick of the battle and then withdraw from him so he will be cut down and killed <\/em>(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_n\u00e2k\u00e2h\">n\u00e2k\u00e2h<\/a><\/em>)<em>.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In both circumstances <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h <\/em>brought these pitch-covered-sins to light (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Joshua+7:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joshua 7:10-26<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/2+Samuel+12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Samuel 12:1-14<\/a>).\u00a0 Thinking atonement was a covering of pitch for sin probably had a lot to do with my conclusion that the Gospel was more a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/23\/who-am-i-part-3\/#_trick\">mind trick<\/a> God played on Himself than something of value for me.<\/p>\n<p>Achan and his family were stoned and burned for theft.\u00a0 David\u2019s sins of adultery and murder<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> were <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/2+Samuel+12:13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forgiven<\/a> <\/em>or <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/01\/15\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-1\/\">passed over<\/a>.\u00a0 I can\u2019t pass by here without at least considering this moral calculus in some way beyond the obvious, that David was a king and Achan\u2019s only claim to fame was the spectacle of his execution.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_Nietzsche\"><\/a><em>All the silver and gold, as well as bronze and iron items, belong to the Lord <\/em>(<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\">\u05dc\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a>), Joshua commanded.\u00a0 <em>They must go into the Lord\u2019s <\/em>(<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>treasury<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 If I hear this with an unbelieving heart it\u2019s easy to see why <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#_unbelief\">Friedrich Nietzsche<\/a> considered Judaism (and not only Judaism) a religion concocted by weak, power-hungry <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Noble_lie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">priests<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The &#8216;law&#8217;, the &#8216;will of God&#8217;, the &#8216;holy book&#8217;, &#8216;inspiration&#8217; &#8211; All these are just words for the conditions under which priests come to power and maintain their power, &#8211; these concepts can be found at the bottom of all priestly organizations, all structures of priestly or philosophical-priestly control. The &#8216;holy lie&#8217; &#8211; this is common to Confucius, the law book of Manu, Mohammed, and the Christian church: and it is not absent from Plato either. &#8216;The truth is there &#8216;: wherever you hear this, it means that the priest is lying.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Friedrich_Nietzsche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Friedrich Nietzsche<\/a>, The Anti-Christ (1888), 55.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"_Gericke\"><\/a>An article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/1494226\/The_Hebrew_Bible_in_Nietzsches_philosophy_of_religion?auto=download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Hebrew Bible in Nietzsche&#8217;s philosophy of religion<\/a>,\u201d by Jaco Gericke offers an interesting overview on this subject.\u00a0 My <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/27\/davids-forgiveness-part-2\/#_Nietzsche\">affection<\/a> for Nietzsche comes from long hours spent with him and Jesus.\u00a0 Nietzsche, of course, is dead and had no opportunity for rebuttal.\u00a0 It\u2019s difficult to say how much that difference alone encouraged and maintained my faith in Jesus.\u00a0 Still I hesitate either to censor Nietzsche\u2019s writings or to promote them as a test of spiritual manhood.\u00a0\u00a0Consider Jaco Gericke.<\/p>\n<p>In \u201cConfessions of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pointofinquiry.org\/jaco_gericke_confessions_of_a_died-again_christian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Died-Again Christian<\/a>,\u201d an interview hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_M._Price\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert M. Price<\/a> online, Professor Gericke gave his testimony, a born-again Christian who became first a \u201cdied-again\u201d Christian then an atheist while studying to become a missionary.\u00a0 After I listened to it I spent the rest of the day pouting.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I do now rather than throwing a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/#_angry\">hissy fit<\/a> or trying to muscle on in my own strength.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEither one of these men,\u201d I prayed, \u201ccould have been better at this than I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Gericke never described the Bible as the product of lying priests (or preachers, as the case may be).\u00a0 He described &#8220;the system&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The system has everything covered.\u00a0 So whatever your problem is, there\u2019s an answer for that somewhere out there\u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And you recognize how religion, how the system has controlled you and told you stories about the way things work, and you see the system for what it is\u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<em> You also understand how the system, with apologetics, has everything covered.\u00a0 So to get out is really as close to a miracle as you can get.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He went to the university originally \u201cto become a missionary to share the joy I found [after a conversion experience] with other people.\u201d\u00a0 Over time that desire was replaced by another, to be \u201cacademically respectable.\u201d\u00a0 Eventually he read\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Beyond-Fundamentalism-Foundations-Evangelical-Christianity\/dp\/B01FIZZ4KC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beyond Fundamentalism<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Barr_(biblical_scholar)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Barr<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cIt focuses so much on the Bible and the text,\u201d he described the experience of reading Barr, \u201cthat in the end what happens is that your Christian ethics destroys your Christian dogma because you just follow the truth and you do introspection.\u201d\u00a0 Mr. Price concurred:\u00a0\u201cThe all important personal relationship with Jesus, the sole point of the Bible according to most of these guys [e.g., top notch evangelical&#8230;scholars], never occurs in the Bible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>True enough, the words\u00a0<em>personal relationship with Jesus<\/em> do not occur in the Bible.\u00a0 The hope and promise of the new covenant reads (Jeremiah 31:34 NET <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/02\/romans-part-6\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPeople will no longer need to teach their neighbors and relatives to know me.\u00a0 For all of them, from the least important to the most important, will know me,\u201d says the Lord <em>(<\/em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4)<\/em>.\u00a0 \u201cFor I will forgive their sin and will no longer call to mind the wrong they have done.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Judas (not Iscariot) said to <\/em>[Jesus] (John14:22-24 NASB):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?\u201d\u00a0 Jesus answered and said to him, \u201cIf anyone loves Me, he will keep <em>(\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.\u00a0 He who does not love Me does not keep <em>(\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6, another form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father\u2019s who sent Me.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Professor Gericke\u2019s testimony wasn\u2019t a tale of following Yahweh\/Jesus through the scriptures to know Him and his Father.\u00a0 Rather, it was a proxy war he conducted in his own mind between his favorite fundamentalist apologists and the writings of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julius_Wellhausen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julius Wellhausen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Strauss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Strauss<\/a>, biblical criticism, the philosophy of religion and the history of Yahweh, along with James Barr.\u00a0 His fundamentalist champions didn\u2019t measure up, so the \u201ctruth\u201d set him free (John 8:31, 32 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then Jesus said to those Judeans who had believed him, \u201cIf you continue to follow my teaching, you are really my disciples and you will know the truth <em>(\u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\">\u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, and the truth <em>(\u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1)<\/em> will set you free.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even if Jesus alluded to a stoic maxim (as Mr. Price asserted) <em>truth <\/em>was not an abstract concept to Him, certainly not the writings of Julius Wellhausen, David Strauss, biblical criticism, the philosophy of religion and the history of Yahweh, along with James Barr.\u00a0 <em>Set them apart in the truth<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u03af\u1fb3, another form of \u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1), He prayed to his Father, <em>your word is truth<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 By <em>word <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2\">\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) Jesus may have alluded to Himself\u2014<em>I am the way, and the truth<\/em> (\u1f00\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2, another form of \u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1), <em>and the life<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u2014but He was born a human baby and socialized into all of the rabbinic lore of his time.\u00a0 He grew to become the person I know and love by preferring a collection of writings <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2015\/07\/18\/study-luke-418-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remarkably similar<\/a> to the Old Testament I read today, which He called \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6 (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Matthew+15:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew 15:6<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Mark+7:13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark 7:13<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Luke+8:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke 8:21<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Luke+11:28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke 11:28<\/a>) or \u1f41 \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6 (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Luke+8:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke 8:11<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+10:34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 10:35<\/a>).\u00a0 Both were translated <em>the word of God<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>After his resurrection He said to his disciples (Luke 24:44-49 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese are <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote1sym\">my<\/a> words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote2sym\">Moses<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote3sym\">the<\/a> prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. Then he opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures, and said to them, \u201cThus it stands <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote4sym\">written<\/a> that the Christ would suffer and would rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all nations, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote5sym\">beginning<\/a> from Jerusalem.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote6sym\">You<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote7sym\">are<\/a> witnesses of these things.\u00a0 And look, I am sending you what my Father promised.\u00a0 But stay in the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#sdfootnote8sym\">city<\/a> until you have been clothed with power from on high\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/more-than-the-minimum\/#_Table2\">Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>His devotion to the truth of those writings was so fierce it terrified <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/01\/12\/pauls-religious-mind-revisited-part-5\/#_cowardice\">Peter<\/a> and the other disciples (Matthew 26:52-56 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then Jesus said to him, \u201cPut your sword back in its place! \u00a0For all who take hold of the sword will die by the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote8sym\">sword<\/a> <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Or do you think that I cannot call on my Father, and that he would send me <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote9sym\">more than<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote10sym\">twelve<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/15\/forgiveness-and-denial-of-christ\/#sdfootnote11sym\">legions<\/a> of angels right now? \u00a0How then would the scriptures that say it must happen this way be fulfilled?\u201d \u00a0At that moment Jesus said to the crowd, \u201cHave you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me like you would an outlaw? \u00a0Day after day I sat teaching in the temple courts, yet you did not arrest me. \u00a0But this has happened so that the scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled.\u201d \u00a0Then all the disciples left him and fled.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unqualified or not I will get up each morning, take whatever <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">faithfulness<\/a> <\/em>I am given and follow Jesus through the scriptures.\u00a0 I desire to do this to know Him and his Father.\u00a0 He has given me a hunger and thirst for his righteousness.\u00a0 And I need to do this lest the sin in my flesh overtake me.\u00a0 Who would have thought of my sinfulness, my utter inability to do righteousness apart from the fruit of the Spirit, as my advantage over Jaco Gericke or Robert Price? <em>I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus answered <em>the <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Luke+5:30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pharisees<\/a> and their experts in the law<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, it takes some faith to find any coherent knowledge of God in his seemingly disparate judgments of Achan and David, but I think they are consistent with Jesus\u2019 command: <em>Do not judge so that you will not be judged. \u00a0For by the standard you judge you will be judged, and the measure you use <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/10\/introduction-2\/#sdfootnote2sym\">will be the measure<\/a> you receive<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/08\/23\/who-am-i-part-7\/#_mercy\">Achan<\/a> was part of the army that had judged\/condemned <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/02\/21\/fear-deuteronomy-part-6\/#_mercy\">Jericho<\/a>: <em>They annihilated with the sword everything that breathed in the city, including men and women, young and old, as well as cattle, sheep, and donkeys<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>David sent out Joab with his officers and the entire Israelite army.\u00a0 They defeated the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah.\u00a0 But David stayed behind in Jerusalem<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Both were judged accordingly.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis is what the Lord <\/em>(<em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4) <em>says<\/em>,\u201d Nathan said to David, <em>\u201c\u2018I am about to bring disaster on you from inside your own household! \u00a0Right before your eyes I will take your wives and hand them over to your companion. \u00a0He will have sexual relations with your wives in broad daylight! \u00a0Although you have acted in secret, I will do this thing before all Israel, and in broad daylight.\u2019\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite Nathan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/16\/davids-forgiveness-part-7\/#_contrast\">warning<\/a> David was merciful to his sons Amnon (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/2+Samuel+13:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Samuel 13:1-21<\/a>) and Absalom (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/2+Samuel+14:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Samuel 14:21-33<\/a>), though that mercy was perhaps the most immediate cause<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a> of the prophecy\u2019s fulfillment.\u00a0 Absalom parlayed Amnon\u2019s death (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/2+Samuel+13:23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Samuel 13:23-37<\/a>) into a credible political argument that he was the law and order choice for king (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/2+Samuel+15:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Samuel 15:1-6<\/a>).\u00a0 I have thought at times that David\u2014the chief law enforcement official in Israel\u2014if he had been strict with his sons, if he had at least left Absalom in self-imposed exile, may have avoided the consequence of Nathan\u2019s prophecy.\u00a0 But Jesus said in a parable (Matthew 18:<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#_Table7\">32-35<\/a> NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThen his lord called the first slave and said to him, \u2018Evil slave! \u00a0I forgave <em>(\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03ba\u03b1, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9\">\u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> you all that debt because you begged me! \u00a0Should you not have shown mercy to your fellow slave, just as <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote18sym\">I<\/a> showed it to you?\u2019 \u00a0And in anger his lord turned him over to the prison guards to torture him until he repaid all he <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote19sym\">owed<\/a>. \u00a0So also my heavenly Father will do to you, if each of you does not forgive <em>(\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> your brother from your <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote20sym\">heart<\/a>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul quoted David from the Septuagint: <em>Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered<\/em>&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The original word in Hebrew was not <em>k\u00e2phar <\/em>or <em>k\u00f4pher <\/em>from Genesis 6:14, <em>and cover it with pitch<\/em>.\u00a0 David chose <em>k\u00e2s\u00e2h <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_k\u00e2s\u00e2h\">\u05db\u05e1\u05d5\u05d9<\/a>): <em>The waters completely inundated the earth so that even all the high mountains under the entire sky were covered<\/em> (<em>k\u00e2s\u00e2h<\/em>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/20\/atonement-part-1\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Two forms of <em>k\u00e2s\u00e2h <\/em>occur in this Psalm (32:1-6 Tanakh):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered <em>(<\/em>k\u00e2s\u00e2h<em>, \u05db\u05e1\u05d5\u05d9) [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u00a0 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/07\/davids-forgiveness-part-4\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u00a0 When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.\u00a0 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer.\u00a0 Selah.<\/p>\n<p>I acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid <em>(<\/em>k\u00e2s\u00e2h<em>, \u05db\u05e1\u05d9\u05ea\u05d9).<\/em>\u00a0 I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.\u00a0 Selah.<\/p>\n<p>For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Therefore you are without excuse<\/em>, Paul wrote believers in Rome, <em>whoever you are, when you judge someone else<\/em> (Romans 2:1-8 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For on whatever grounds you judge another, you condemn yourself, because you who judge practice the same things. \u00a0Now we know that God\u2019s judgment is in accordance with truth <em>(\u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1)<\/em> against those who practice such things. \u00a0And do you think, whoever you are, when you judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself, that you will escape God\u2019s judgment? \u00a0Or do you have contempt for the wealth of his kindness, forbearance, and patience, and yet do not know that God\u2019s kindness leads you to repentance? \u00a0But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath for yourselves in the day of wrath, when God\u2019s righteous judgment is revealed! \u00a0He <strong><em>will reward each one according to his works<\/em><\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+17:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eternal life<\/a> to those who by perseverance in good works seek glory and honor and immortality, but wrath and anger to those who live in selfish ambition and do not obey <em>(\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> the truth <em>(\u1f00\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u03af\u1fb3, another form of \u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1)<\/em> but follow unrighteousness.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Near the end of the interview with Jaco Gericke, Robert Price described what he called\u00a0\u201cPracticing the Absence of God\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>What you use to say was the leading of the Holy Spirit, this internal voice\u2014\u201cOh, don&#8217;t you want to come back?
