\u201cJews\u201d and the right column \u201cGreeks\u201d or \u201cGentiles.\u201d\u00a0 We might want to do something similar with \u201cChurch Folk\u201d and \u201cUnchurched Folk\u201d or \u201cReligious\u201d and \u201cIrreligious.\u201d\u00a0 But Paul was quite careful to label the columns himself: \u00a0<em>For it is not those who hear <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/akr.html#akroatai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u1f76<\/a>, a form of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/akr.html#akroaths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b1\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2<\/a>) <em><a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eq.html#eqnh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>, a form of <a (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) <em>of the law<\/em> (\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5, a form of\u00a0\u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2) <em>is written in their hearts, as their conscience bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or else defend them, on the day when God will judge<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krinei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krinw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the secrets<\/em> (<a gospel through Christ Jesus<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_poet\"><\/a>The word translated <em>do<\/em> in <em>those who do<\/em> <em>the law<\/em> <em>will be declared righteous<\/em> is the Greek word for <em>poet<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>For in him we live and move about and exist, as even some of your own poets<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b7\u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd, another form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b7\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2) <em>have said, \u201cFor we too are his offspring,\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> Paul preached in Athens.\u00a0 It is derived from \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9, <em>to make<\/em>, <em>to do<\/em>.\u00a0 Our word <em>poet<\/em> bears no trace of a relationship to <em>making<\/em> or <em>doing<\/em>.\u00a0 A <em>poet of the law<\/em> might be indistinguishable to me from a <em>hearer<\/em> <em>of the law<\/em>.\u00a0 I might imagine that a poet of the law, rather than <em>doing<\/em> the law, writes pretty sonnets about the law, or worse, writes his own laws to establish his own righteousness.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_hypocrite\"><\/a>If I recall how often Jesus called the Pharisees <em>hypocrites<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upok.html#upokritai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b1\u1f76<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upok.html#upokriths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2<\/a>, <em>actor<\/em>) and assume that Paul was very sensitive to this, his choice of words becomes clearer.\u00a0 It relates to the Greek theater.\u00a0 The actor wore a mask, with a megaphone built in to artificially amplify his voice.\u00a0 He played a part and spoke lines written for him by a poet.\u00a0 But when a poet performed on stage, he wore no mask.\u00a0 He spoke his own lines with his own voice from his own heart.<\/p>\n<p>I believe it is important, especially in the how-to portion of Romans, to keep it straight that fulfilling the law, becoming a <em>doer<\/em> or <em>poet<\/em> of the law, was Paul\u2019s point.\u00a0 This focus can protect me from stumbling over the things he wrote that <em>are hard to understand, things the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they also do to the rest of the scriptures<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_obey\"><\/a>One of the things that made it more difficult for me to fully embrace Paul\u2019s teaching was that I never heard anyone quote Paul\u2019s concept\u2014<em>you are not under law but under grace<\/em>\u2014as a means to an end of fulfilling the law or becoming a doer of the law, not even as a reason why <em>sin will have no mastery over you<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It was always quoted as justification for some sin the speaker wished to continue indulging.\u00a0 <a id=\"_motives\"><\/a>Whenever I asked my elders about the things I thought I was learning from Paul, they assumed I wanted to indulge some secret sin and responded with something like, \u201cNo, you really have to do it!\u201d\u00a0 They had no way of knowing, I suppose, that they were encouraging me to keep on trying to <em>have my own righteousness derived from the law<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though Paul and James may not have <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/16\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-1\/\">agreed fully<\/a> on all aspects of the law and its relationship to believers in Jesus Christ, on these two things\u2014becoming a doer rather than a hearer, and not judging\u2014they were in complete agreement.\u00a0 And I quote James to demonstrate these two points and conclude this essay.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>By his sovereign plan he gave us birth through the message <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u1ff3<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/lo.html#logos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>of truth, that we would be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.\u00a0 Understand this,<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>my dear brothers and sisters!\u00a0 Let every<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>
