href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/09\/romans-part-10\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This all sounds like pretty good stuff to me.\u00a0 Since I\u2019ve read Paul so many times before I\u2019m a bit suspicious of <em>relying<\/em> or <em>resting<\/em> (\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u1f7b\u1fc3) <em>on the law<\/em>.\u00a0 I have encountered the word \u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 enough to know that <em>boast of your relationship to God<\/em> was the translators\u2019 choice.\u00a0 It might have been translated <em>rejoice<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/09\/romans-part-10\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 All in all this sounds like a description of one who would <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/08\/romans-part-9\/\"><em>do<\/em> <\/a>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poiwsi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poiew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/09\/romans-part-10\/#_Addendum\">Addendum<\/a> below) <em>the law<\/em> (\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5, another form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2).\u00a0 Since I know the proverb\u2014<em>Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/09\/romans-part-10\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a>\u2014and have a feel for its use in storytelling, I get more suspicious as Paul continued (Romans 2:19, 20 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;and if you are convinced <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pep.html#pepoiqas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u1f73\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b8\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peiqw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an educator of the senseless, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law <em>(\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u1ff3, a form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em> the essential features of knowledge <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gn.html#gnwsews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u03bd\u1f7d\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gn.html#gnwsis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03b3\u03bd\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>and of the truth <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/alh.html#alhqeias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/alh.html#alhqeia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>)\u2026<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Without ever using the word <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upok.html#upokriths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2<\/a> (<em>actor<\/em>) Paul presented a classic definition: <em>therefore you who teach someone else, do you not teach yourself?\u00a0 You who preach against stealing, do you steal? \u00a0You who tell others not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery?\u00a0 You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/09\/romans-part-10\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0I think Paul singled out the Jews here because he knew himself and his own people best.\u00a0 He hadn\u2019t been to Rome to meet the Romans yet.\u00a0 Sometimes I feel like there are really only two types of people in the world, hypocrites and those who don\u2019t even try.<\/p>\n<p>When I think like that, however, I am defining <em>hypocrite<\/em> as a person <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/01\/31\/hypocrisy\/\">who does not fully practice<\/a> what he preaches or believes or aspires to.\u00a0 Obviously I have just described everyone who preaches, believes or aspires to anything.\u00a0 Paul was more specific.\u00a0 His definition was one who <em>relies<\/em> or <em>rests<\/em>\u00a0on God\u2019s law, perhaps more to the point, one who relies or rests on his own ability to keep God\u2019s law and then does not fully practice the law he preaches, believes and aspires to.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_promise\"><\/a><em>You who boast<\/em> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u1fb6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9) <em>in the law<\/em> (\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u1ff3, a form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2), Paul continued, <em>dishonor<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/at.html#atimazeis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/at.html#atimazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <em>God by transgressing<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parab.html#parabasews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b2\u1f71\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parab.html#parabasis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <em>the law<\/em> (\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5, another form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2)! \u00a0<em>For just as it is written,<\/em> \u201c<strong><em>the name of God is being blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/09\/romans-part-10\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/09\/pauls-ot-quotes-romans-2\/#_Addendum\">quotation<\/a> here from <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Isaiah+52:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah 52:5<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/09\/pauls-ot-quotes-romans-2\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>] is not simply a matter of piling on, of kicking the Jews who relied on, and didn\u2019t fully live up to, the law when they were down.\u00a0 It\u2019s a flashing beacon of the mind of Christ and a portent where Paul\u2019s thoughts, and letter, were headed.<\/p>\n<p>This boasting in the law, this dishonoring of God by transgressing the law, was known.\u00a0 It was prophesied. \u00a0It is part of God\u2019s Holy Word. \u00a0It was like <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/\">Jesus prophesying to Peter<\/a>, <em>I tell you the truth, on this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times<\/em>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/09\/romans-part-10\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> but on a grander scale.\u00a0 Here is the promise that follows Isaiah 52:5 (Isaiah 52:6-12 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For this reason my people will know my name, for this reason they will know at that time that I am the one who says, \u201cHere I am.\u201d \u00a0How delightful it is to see approaching over the mountains the feet of a messenger who announces peace, a messenger who brings good news, who announces deliverance, who says to Zion, \u201cYour God reigns!\u201d \u00a0Listen, your watchmen shout; in unison they shout for joy, for they see with their very own eyes the Lord\u2019s return to Zion. \u00a0In unison give a joyful shout, O ruins of Jerusalem!\u00a0 For the Lord consoles his people; he protects Jerusalem. \u00a0The Lord reveals his royal power in the sight of all the nations; the entire earth sees our God deliver. \u00a0Leave!\u00a0 Leave!\u00a0 Get out of there! Don\u2019t touch anything unclean!\u00a0 Get out of it!\u00a0 Stay pure, you who carry the Lord\u2019s holy items! \u00a0Yet do not depart quickly or leave in a panic.\u00a0 For the Lord goes before you; the God of Israel is your rear guard.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_Addendum\"><\/a><strong>Addendum:<\/strong> November 1, 2020<br \/>\nIn the second paragraph I had indicated that <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poiwsi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> was a form of <a
