After Jesus\u2019 resurrection, He appeared to his disciples (John 20:21-23 NET):<\/p>\n

So Jesus said to them again, \u201cPeace be with you.\u00a0 Just as the Father has sent me, I also send you.\u201d \u00a0And after he said this, he breathed on them and said, \u201cReceive the Holy Spirit<\/a>. \u00a0If you forgive (\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) <\/em>anyone\u2019s sins (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, they are forgiven (\u1f00\u03c6\u03ad\u03c9\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em>; if you retain (\u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>anyone\u2019s sins, they are retained (\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u03ac\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In John 20:23 (NET)<\/a> Jesus contrasted forgiving (\u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) sins to retaining (\u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9) them.\u00a0 The contrast in Matthew 4:11 (NET)<\/a> is that the devil left<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) [Jesus], and angels came<\/em> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u1fc6\u03bb\u03b8\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03ad\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) and began ministering to his needs<\/em>.\u00a0 In Matthew 4:20 (NET)<\/a> Simon (called Peter) and Andrew left<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c6\u03ad\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) their nets immediately and followed<\/em> (\u1f20\u03ba\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03cd\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) [Jesus].\u00a0 In Matthew 9:25 (NET)<\/a> krate\u014d<\/em>, (\u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9) is contrasted to ekball\u014d<\/em> (\u1f10\u03ba\u03b2\u03ac\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>):\u00a0 But when the crowd had been put outside<\/em> (\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03b2\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03b2\u03ac\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9), he went in and gently took<\/em> (\u1f10\u03ba\u03c1\u03ac\u03c4\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9) her by the hand, and the girl got up<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I get the point that to forgive<\/em> another\u2019s sins, I send those sins away from that person, creating a distance, rather than holding them close.\u00a0 This is something I do in my mind, not recalling a sin as I recall the forgiven person.\u00a0 But John 20:21-23 seems to indicate that the consequence of doing (or not doing) so is farther-reaching than my mind.<\/p>\n

Jesus taught his followers to pray (Matthew 6:12 NET), forgive<\/em> (\u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) us our debts, as we ourselves have forgiven<\/em>1<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f00\u03c6\u03ae\u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)\u00a0our debtors<\/em>.\u00a0 How easily such prayer could become a self-invoked curse (Matthew 6:14, 15 NET): For if you forgive<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) others their sins<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>), your heavenly Father will also forgive<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c6\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) you. \u00a0But if you do not forgive<\/em> (\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5, a form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) others,<\/em>2<\/sup><\/a> your Father will not forgive <\/em>(\u1f00\u03c6\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)\u00a0you your sins<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1, a form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1).<\/p>\n

Jesus\u2019 teaching recorded in Matthew 18:15-20 (NET) offers a counter example to 1 John 1:9 and 10<\/a>, and aligns with his teaching recorded in John 20:21-23:<\/p>\n

If your brother sins (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ae\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>,3<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>go and4<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>show him his fault (\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03b3\u03be\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b3\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>when the two of you are alone. \u00a0If he listens (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>to you, you have regained (\u1f10\u03ba\u03ad\u03c1\u03b4\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03b4\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>your brother. \u00a0But if he does not listen (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c3\u1fc3, a form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em>, take one or two others with you, so that at the testimony of two or three witnesses every matter may be established<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0If he refuses to listen (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>to them, tell it to the church (\u1f10\u03ba\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03af\u1fb3<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0If he refuses to listen (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c3\u1fc3, a form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em> to the church (\u1f10\u03ba\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03af\u03b1)<\/em>, treat him like a Gentile or a tax collector. \u00a0I tell you the truth, whatever you bind (\u03b4\u03ae\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>on earth will have been bound (\u03b4\u03b5\u03b4\u03b5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> in heaven,5<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and whatever you release (\u03bb\u03cd\u03c3\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>on earth will have been released (\u03bb\u03b5\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u03bb\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em> in heaven. \u00a0Again, I tell you the truth6<\/sup><\/a><\/em>, if two of7<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>you on earth agree about whatever you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. \u00a0For where two or three are assembled in my name, I am there among them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This passage begins with instruction how to handle a person who will not confess (\u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) sin (1 John 1:9, 10 NET).<\/p>\n

But if we confess (\u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd, a form of \u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> our sins (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1)<\/em>, he is faithful (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>and righteous (\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, forgiving (\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc7, another form of \u00a0\u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> us our sins (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\u03c2,\u00a0a form of\u00a0\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> and cleansing (\u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>us from all unrighteousness (\u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0If we say we have not sinned (\u1f21\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ae\u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9)<\/em>, we make (\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>him a liar and his word (\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <\/em>is not in us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To confess (\u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) sin is to acknowledge the word (\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) of Jesus concerning sin, to agree with Him that the thing in question is sin.\u00a0 The purpose is not to humiliate the sinner but to regain (\u1f10\u03ba\u03ad\u03c1\u03b4\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form \u03ba\u03b5\u03c1\u03b4\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) a brother (as opposed to winning an argument).\u00a0 That purpose remains throughout, up to and including shunning.\u00a0 Forgiveness is not given out of the fear of Matthew 6:14 and 15<\/a>, but on the basis of God\u2019s own forgiveness through Jesus Christ.\u00a0 It is also important that the \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2 of Jesus is truly the basis for determining sin as opposed to some distinctive<\/em> of a religious sect.<\/p>\n

The binding<\/em> and releasing<\/em> of Matthew 18:18 seem to correspond to forgiving<\/em> and retaining<\/em> sins in John 20:23.\u00a0 There is apparently an ongoing debate whether the binding and releasing will have been<\/em> or will be<\/em> bound or released in heaven.\u00a0 The point seems moot.\u00a0 In either case the agreement of two on earth as to what is to be bound or released, forgiven or retained, carries the imprimatur of heaven.\u00a0 It\u2019s a sobering thought.\u00a0 But the scale tips toward releasing and forgiving because of the character of God.<\/p>\n

The passage continues (Matthew 18:21, 22 NET):<\/p>\n

Then Peter came to him and said, \u201cLord, how many times must I forgive (\u1f00\u03c6\u03ae\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>,\u00a0another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> my brother who sins against me?\u00a0 As many as seven times?\u201d \u00a0Jesus said to him, \u201cNot seven times, I tell you, but seventy-seven times!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then Jesus told a parable that might shed some light on how literal<\/a> one should be about seventy-seven times<\/em> (Matthew 18:23-35 NET).<\/p>\n

\u201cFor this reason, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his slaves. \u00a0As he began settling his accounts, a man who owed ten thousand talents was brought to him. \u00a0Because he was not able to repay it, the8<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>lord ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, children, and whatever he possessed,9<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and repayment to be made. \u00a0Then the slave threw himself to the ground before him, saying,10<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u2018Be patient with me, and I will repay you everything.\u2019 \u00a0The lord had compassion on that slave and released (\u1f00\u03c0\u03ad\u03bb\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>him, and forgave (\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03ba\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> him the debt. \u00a0After he went out, that same slave found one of his fellow slaves who owed him one hundred silver coins.\u00a0 So he grabbed him by the throat and started to choke him, saying, \u2018Pay back11<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>what12<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>you owe me!\u2019 \u00a0Then his fellow slave threw himself down13<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and begged (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b5\u03ba\u03ac\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>him, \u2018Be patient with me, and I will repay14<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>you.\u2019 \u00a0But he refused.\u00a0 Instead, he went out and threw him in prison until15<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>he repaid the debt. \u00a0When16<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were very upset and went and told their17<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>lord everything that had taken place. \u00a0Then his lord called the first slave and said to him, \u2018Evil slave!\u00a0 I forgave (\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03ba\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> you all that debt because you begged (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b5\u03ba\u03ac\u03bb\u03b5\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> me! \u00a0Should you not have shown mercy (\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u1fc6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>to your fellow slave, just as I18<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>showed (\u1f20\u03bb\u03ad\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em>\u00a0it to you?\u2019 \u00a0And in anger his lord turned him over to the prison guards to torture him until he repaid all he owed.19<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u00a0So also my heavenly Father will do to you, if each of you does not forgive (\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5, a form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> your brother from your heart.\u201d20<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Have faith <\/em>(\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) in God<\/em>, Jesus told his disciples.21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For this reason I tell you, whatever<\/em>22<\/sup><\/a> you pray<\/em>23<\/sup><\/a> and<\/em>24<\/sup><\/a> ask for,<\/em>25<\/sup><\/a> believe<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) that you have received<\/em>26<\/sup><\/a> it, and it will be yours<\/em>.27<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The topic here is not forgiveness <\/em>but faith<\/em> in God and believing<\/em> what one asks for in prayer.\u00a0 Yet the connection between faith in God and forgiveness is so strong in Jesus\u2019 mind that I find his thumb on the scale again (Mark 11:25 NET):<\/p>\n

Whenever you stand28<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive (\u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive (\u1f00\u03c6\u1fc7<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9)<\/em> you your sins (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Watch yourselves!<\/em> Jesus said.\u00a0 If<\/em>29<\/sup><\/a> your brother sins<\/em> (\u1f01\u03bc\u03ac\u03c1\u03c4\u1fc3<\/a>, another form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9),30<\/sup><\/a> rebuke <\/em>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c4\u03af\u03bc\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) him. If he repents<\/em> (\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03ae\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>), forgive<\/em> (\u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) him. \u00a0Even if he sins<\/em> (\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ae\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, another form of \u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9)31<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0against you seven times in a day, and seven times<\/em>32<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0returns to<\/em>33<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0you saying, \u201cI repent <\/em>(\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u1ff6<\/a>, another form of \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03ad\u03c9),\u201d you must forgive <\/em><\/em>(\u1f00\u03c6\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c6\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9) him<\/em>.34<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is worth noting that the sinner\u2019s repentance\u00a0did not mean that the sinner\u2019s sin had ceased.\u00a0 On the contrary, Jesus\u2019 thumb is most heavy on the scale, tipping it toward release and forgiveness, when sin against God was arguably at its zenith (Luke 23:33 NET):<\/p>\n

So when they came35<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>to the place that is called \u201cThe Skull,\u201d they crucified [Jesus]<\/em> there, along with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It was then and there that\u00a0Jesus interceded for all humanity (Luke 23:34a NET):<\/p>\n

Father, forgive them (\u03b1\u03c6\u03b5\u03c2<\/a> \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, for they don\u2019t know (\u03bf\u1f34\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>what they are doing (\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
