href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/02\/07\/forgiven-or-passed-over-part-4\/#_ftn9\">yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s<\/a> <\/em>fearful pronouncement:\u00a0<em>I punish\u00a0<\/em>(<em>p\u00e2qad<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_p\u00e2qad\">\u05e4\u05e7\u05d3<\/a>)\u00a0<em>the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons for the sin of the fathers who reject me<\/em>\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/12\/fear-deuteronomy-part-12\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 By way of review, I didn\u2019t find anything about the Hebrew word itself that would compel anyone to translate \u05e4\u05e7\u05d3 (<em>p\u00e2qad<\/em>) <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_punish\">I punish<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 While I don\u2019t have any particular quarrel with calling the <em>plague <\/em>of <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Exodus+32:35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exodus 32:35<\/a> a punishment, I\u2019m not convinced it justifies translating <em>p\u00e2qad I punish<\/em> (\u05e4\u05e7\u05d3\u05d9) and <em>I will indeed punish<\/em> (\u05d5\u05e4\u05e7\u05d3\u05ea\u05d9) beyond this limited context.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/12\/fear-deuteronomy-part-12\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_experiment\">thought experiment<\/a> I concluded that the translation of \u05e4\u05e7\u05d3 (<em>p\u00e2qad<\/em>) as <em>I punish<\/em> in Deuteronomy 5:9 was a perpetuation of an erroneous <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/09\/fear-deuteronomy-part-9\/#_notion\">popular notion<\/a> of religious minds that was clearly corrected in <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Ezekiel+18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ezekiel 18<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/12\/fear-deuteronomy-part-12\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0\u00a0Though the fixation on punishment in <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Leviticus+18:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leviticus 18:25<\/a> is difficult for me to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/12\/30\/fear-deuteronomy-part-11\/\">unravel<\/a>, it hasn\u2019t really dissuaded me from the idea that <em>y<sup>e<\/sup>h\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/10\/25\/fear-deuteronomy-part-10\/#_visitation\">visits iniquity<\/a> itself upon descendants to consign all to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/12\/30\/fear-deuteronomy-part-11\/#_disobedience\">disobedience<\/a>, <em>so that he may show mercy to them all<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/12\/fear-deuteronomy-part-12\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here I\u2019ll focus on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/hebrew-dictionary\/#_\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n\">\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n<\/a> <\/em>in Exodus, and though I\u2019ve already <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_Table2\">considered<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Exodus+20:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exodus 20:5<\/a> I want to start there again from a slightly different perspective.\u00a0 I\u2019m comparing\/contrasting the NET and Tanakh as relatively contemporary translations of the Hebrew from Christian and Jewish perspectives respectively, and the Septuagint as a more ancient Jewish perspective.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for the sins of the father in the ten commandments.\u00a0 Though one might argue that\u2014<em>responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing<\/em>\u2014is scarcely different if one already has that idea in mind, it is a move away from:\u00a0<em>punishing the children for the sin of the parents<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/niv\/exodus\/20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NIV<\/a>), <em>punishing the children for the fathers&#8217; iniquity<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/csb\/exodus\/20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CSB<\/a>), <em>I will punish your families<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/cev\/exodus\/20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CEV<\/a>), <em>I bring punishment on those who hate me and on their descendants<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/gnt\/exodus\/20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GNT<\/a>), <em>punishing the children for the fathers&#8217; sin<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/hcsb\/exodus\/20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HCSB<\/a>), <em>punishing the children for the iniquity of the parents <\/em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/isv\/exodus\/20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ISV<\/a>) or <em>I punish children for their parents&#8217; sins<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/gwt\/exodus\/20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GWT<\/a>).<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/12\/fear-deuteronomy-part-12\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0All of these translations follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/12\/30\/fear-deuteronomy-part-11\/#_disobedient\">idea<\/a> in the Septuagint that <em>visiting <\/em>(\u05e4\u05e7\u05d3) <em>iniquity <\/em>(\u05e2\u05d5\u05df) is equivalent to \u201crepaying\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apod.html#apodidwmi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-2\/#_\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) I\u2019m way too snobby to cite it as support.\u00a0 The next occurrence of <em>\u02bd\u00e2v\u00f4n <\/em>includes an occurrence of <em><a
