href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/poi.html#poihths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b7\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2<\/a>) the law.\u00a0 <em>For circumcision has its value<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/wf.html#wfelei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f60\u03c6\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/wf.html#wfelew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f60\u03c6\u03b5\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em>if you practice<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pra.html#prasshs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03c1\u1f71\u03c3\u03c3\u1fc3\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pra.html#prassw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>) <em>the law<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/no.html#nomon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/parab.html#parabaths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b2\u03ac\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>) <em>the law<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/no.html#nomou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, another form of \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2), <em>your circumcision has become uncircumcision<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t going to delve into <em>circumcision<\/em> here, but I can\u2019t resist the first occurrence in John 7.\u00a0 Perhaps an appreciation of Jesus\u2019 frustration will do more to distinguish the \u1f00\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b1\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2 from the \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b7\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2 of the law.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_signs\"><\/a>Jesus was staying in Galilee, avoiding Judea <em>because the Jewish leaders wanted to kill him<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This stemmed from an incident when He healed a man <em>who had been disabled<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <em>for thirty-eight<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> <em>years<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>So the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, \u201cIt is the Sabbath, and<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> <em>you are not permitted to carry your<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> <em>mat.\u201d \u00a0But<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> <em>he answered them, \u201cThe man who made me well said to me, \u2018Pick up your mat and walk.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 They asked<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> <em>him, \u201cWho is the man who said to you, \u2018Pick up your mat<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> <em>and walk\u2019?\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><em> \u00a0<\/em>The healed man didn\u2019t know who made him well.<\/p>\n<p>Later Jesus found the man in the temple and said, <em>Look, you have become well.\u00a0 Don\u2019t sin any more, lest anything worse happen to you<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Sad to say I understand this man perfectly.\u00a0 For thirty-eight years, fifty-two times each year, he kept the Sabbath by not standing up, picking up his mat or walking.\u00a0 One Sabbath Jesus came up to him and said, <em>Stand up!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <em>Pick up your mat and walk<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For some reason, inexplicable except for the grace of God, the man believed this stranger and tried to stand up, pick up his mat and walk.\u00a0 <em>Immediately the man was healed, and he picked up his mat and started walking<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 When Jesus told him, <em>Don\u2019t sin any more<\/em>, the healed man was conscience stricken that he had stood up, picked up his mat and walked on the Sabbath.\u00a0 So he trotted back <em>and informed the Jewish leaders that Jesus was the one who had made him well<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Now because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began persecuting him<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_blindness\"><\/a>Before I get too carried away with the blindness of ancient Jewish leaders I\u2019ll relate a fairly contemporary tale.\u00a0 I was standing just inside the doorway with the Pastor of a small Bible church one Sunday before the evening service.\u00a0 A car pulled up in the parking lot.\u00a0 A visiting couple got out and made their way toward the door.\u00a0 The Pastor opened the door and extended his hand to help the woman up the stair.\u00a0 She refused his hand and stopped in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore I come in here, I just want to know one thing,\u201d she said belligerently.\u00a0 \u201cDid Jesus turn water into wine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d never experienced anything like this, but reasoned quickly that this was a Bible church, the woman wanted to make sure that we believed the fundamentals of the faith, including Jesus\u2019 miracles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d the Pastor said.<\/p>\n<p>I was stunned.\u00a0 But that was nothing compared to my confusion when the woman smiled, took the Pastor\u2019s hand and entered the church.\u00a0 Later, when I got him alone, I asked, \u201cHow did you know that <em>no<\/em> was the right answer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then it was his turn to be stunned that I would impugn his sincerity.\u00a0 \u201cBecause it is the right answer,\u201d he said defensively.\u00a0 I argued fairly ineffectively for the distinction between Jesus and John the Baptist,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a> but he was having none of it.\u00a0 \u201cWine <em>is<\/em> a mocker, Strong drink <em>is<\/em> a brawler,\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> he quoted the Proverb. \u00a0Though he never pressed me on it, I got the message that because of this Proverb Jesus would not make, serve or encourage anyone to drink alcohol\u2014no matter what the Bible seemed to be saying to me.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously I have been blinder than this many times.\u00a0 It\u2019s not fair to judge the Pastor or the woman by this one idiosyncrasy, though I do think she was looking for a Pastor who would dance to her flute.\u00a0 She obviously didn\u2019t return.\u00a0 I wonder at times why I stayed so long.\u00a0 But the people there were nice to me. \u00a0Some said the church would close if I left.\u00a0 The church closed sometime after I finally left.\u00a0 I don\u2019t really think there is any cause and effect there.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Remember the Sabbath day to set it apart as holy <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u00a0 For six days you may labor and do all your work <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; on it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your cattle, or the resident foreigner who is in your gates <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_Table7\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/12\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-4\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As far as the Jewish leaders were concerned no man of God would heal a disabled man on the Sabbath and tell him to <em>Stand up!\u00a0 Pick up your mat and walk<\/em>.\u00a0 Jesus told them, <em>\u201cMy Father is working until now, and I too am working.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But that didn\u2019t help at all.\u00a0 <em>For this reason the Jewish leaders were trying even harder to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was also calling God his own Father, thus making himself equal with God<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Frankly, the way I\u2019ve presented the story so far puts the Jewish leaders on a lot firmer ground scripturally than my Pastor.\u00a0 But if I bring in a similar story from Luke\u2019s Gospel, the picture gets a bit more nuanced.\u00a0 Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath.\u00a0 <em>A woman<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> <em>was there who had been disabled by a spirit for eighteen<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a> <em>years.\u00a0 She was bent over and could not straighten herself up completely<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Jesus healed her (Luke 13:14-17 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But the president of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the crowd, \u201cThere are six<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>days on which work should be done!\u00a0 So come and be healed on those days,<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote27sym\" name=\"sdfootnote27anc\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>and not on the Sabbath day.\u201d \u00a0Then<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote28sym\" name=\"sdfootnote28anc\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>the Lord answered him, \u201cYou hypocrites<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote29sym\" name=\"sdfootnote29anc\"><sup>29<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upok.html#upokritai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b1\u1f77<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upok.html#upokriths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2<\/a>)!\u00a0<\/em> Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from its stall, and lead it to water?\u201d\u00a0 Then shouldn\u2019t this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be released from this imprisonment on the Sabbath day?\u201d \u00a0When he said this all his adversaries were humiliated, but the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things he was doing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Humiliated Jewish leaders were not Jesus\u2019 only adversaries.\u00a0 While He was staying out of Judea because they wanted to kill him, as the beginning of the feast of Tabernacles approached, his <em>brothers advised him, \u201cLeave here and go to Judea so your disciples may see your miracles that you are performing. \u00a0For no one who seeks to make a reputation for himself does anything in secret. \u00a0If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.\u201d \u00a0(For not even his own brothers believed in him.)<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote30sym\" name=\"sdfootnote30anc\"><sup>30<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_family\"><\/a>Mark\u2019s Gospel account gives me the impression that it was Jesus\u2019 persistence in healing on the Sabbath even after the Pharisees <em>began plotting<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote31sym\" name=\"sdfootnote31anc\"><sup>31<\/sup><\/a> <em>with the Herodians, as to how they could assassinate him<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote32sym\" name=\"sdfootnote32anc\"><sup>32<\/sup><\/a> over it that alarmed his mother and his brothers.\u00a0 On one homecoming (probably to Peter\u2019s house) <em>they went out to restrain him, for they said, \u201cHe is out of his mind.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote33sym\" name=\"sdfootnote33anc\"><sup>33<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 While the <em>experts in the law who came down from Jerusalem said, \u201cHe is possessed by Beelzebul,\u201d and, \u201cBy the ruler of demons he casts out demons.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote34sym\" name=\"sdfootnote34anc\"><sup>34<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the context for Jesus\u2019 saying, <em>\u201cWho are my mother and<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote35sym\" name=\"sdfootnote35anc\"><sup>35<\/sup><\/a> <em>my brothers?\u201d \u00a0And looking at those who were sitting around him in a circle, he said, \u201cHere are my mother and my brothers! \u00a0For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.\u201d<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote36sym\" name=\"sdfootnote36anc\"><sup>36<\/sup><\/a><em>\u00a0 <\/em>It is also probably a better context to consider\u2014<em>Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/11\/romans-part-11\/#sdfootnote37sym\" name=\"sdfootnote37anc\"><sup>37<\/sup><\/a>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/03\/davids-forgiveness-part-3\/\">than Jephthah&#8217;s sacrifice of his daughter.<\/a>\u00a0 <em>Indeed, such a thing never even entered my mind!<\/em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\"
