Make Holy, Part 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The next form of \u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 I want to consider is found in Jesus\u2019 prayer to his Father: <em>Set them apart<\/em> (\u1f01\u03b3\u1f77\u03b1\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agi.html#agiazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u1f01\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) <em>in the truth; your word is truth<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But I\u2019m making a slow pilgrimage through his prayer because I believe I can <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+17:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">know<\/a> his <em>holiness <\/em>here.\u00a0 <em>I have revealed your name<\/em>, Jesus prayed, <em>to the <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/01\/14\/to-make-holy-part-4\/#_people\">people<\/a>]<em> you gave me out of the world.\u00a0 They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have obeyed <\/em>(\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u1f75\u03c1\u03b7\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) <em>your word<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus came into the world to be <em>despised and rejected by people<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And though the Greek word \u03ba\u1f79\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5 (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u03ba\u03cc\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2\">\u03ba\u03cc\u03c3\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), translated <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+17:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">of the world<\/a><\/em>, does not exclude the larger Gentile world necessarily, at this particular time He <em>was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> rather than <em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+2:15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gentile sinners<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 <em>You people are from your father the devil<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus said of Israel\u2019s religious leaders. \u00a0<em>A disciple is not greater than his teacher, but everyone when fully trained will be like his teacher<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> serves as a fair assessment of those who followed Israel\u2019s teachers.\u00a0 <em>You cross land and sea to make one convert, and when you get one, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> is certainly more explicit. \u00a0This gives me some context, how precious the people <em>you gave me out of the world <\/em>were to Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><em>He came to what was his own<\/em> (\u1f34\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f34\u03b4\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f34\u03b4\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), <em>but his own people<\/em> (\u1f34\u03b4\u03b9\u03bf\u03b9, another form of \u1f34\u03b4\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2) <em>did not receive him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0He knew this would happen.\u00a0 Isaiah prophesied it: <em>He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And in a very real sense their rejection was part of the plan and purpose of salvation (Romans 11:11-33 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I ask then, they did not stumble into an irrevocable fall, did they? \u00a0Absolutely not! \u00a0But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles <em>(\u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, to make Israel jealous. \u00a0Now if their transgression means riches for the world and their defeat means riches for the Gentiles <em>(\u1f10\u03b8\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd, another form of \u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em>, how much more will their full restoration bring?<\/p>\n<p>Now I am speaking to you Gentiles <em>(\u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd, a form of \u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em>. \u00a0Seeing that I am an apostle to the Gentiles <em>(\u1f10\u03b8\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd, another form of \u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em>, I magnify my ministry, if somehow I could provoke my people to jealousy and save some of them. \u00a0For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? \u00a0If the first portion of the dough offered is holy <em>(\u1f01\u03b3\u1f77\u03b1, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f05\u03b3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2\">\u1f05\u03b3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, then the whole batch is holy, and if the root is holy <em>(\u1f01\u03b3\u1f77\u03b1, a form of \u1f05\u03b3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em>, so too are the branches.<\/p>\n<p>Now if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among them and participated in the richness of the olive root, do not boast over the branches. \u00a0But if you boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. \u00a0Then you will say, \u201cThe branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.\u201d \u00a0Granted! \u00a0They were broken off because of their unbelief <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03af\u03b1\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1f77\u1fb3<\/a>)<\/em>, but you stand by faith <em>(\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0Do not be arrogant, but fear! \u00a0For if God did not spare the natural branches, perhaps he will not spare you. \u00a0Notice therefore the kindness and harshness of God \u2013 harshness toward those who have fallen, but God\u2019s kindness toward you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. \u00a0And even they \u2013 if they do not continue in their unbelief <em>(\u1f00\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1f77\u1fb3)<\/em>\u2013 will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. \u00a0For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural branches be grafted back into their own olive tree?<\/p>\n<p>For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: A partial hardening has happened to Israel until the full number of the Gentiles <em>(\u1f10\u03b8\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd, another form of \u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2)<\/em> has come in. \u00a0And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: <strong><em>\u201cThe Deliverer will come out of Zion; he will remove ungodliness from Jacob<\/em><\/strong><em>. <\/em>\u00a0<strong><em>And this is my covenant with them<\/em><\/strong><em>, <strong>when I take away their sins.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In regard to the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but in regard to election they are dearly loved for the sake of the fathers. \u00a0For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. \u00a0Just as you were formerly disobedient <em>(\u1f20\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> to God, but have now received mercy due to their disobedience <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b5\u1f77\u1fb3<\/a>)<\/em>, so they too have now been disobedient <em>(\u1f20\u03c0\u03b5\u1f77\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9)<\/em> in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. \u00a0For God has consigned all people to disobedience <em>(\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u1f77\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1)<\/em> so that he may show mercy to them all.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! \u00a0How unsearchable are his judgments and how fathomless his ways!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m ignoring for the moment the more traditional <a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/commentaries\/john\/17-6.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interpretation<\/a> of this verse, the importance and instrumentality of the eleven apostles carrying on Jesus\u2019 message and building the church, in favor of the comfort God the Father gave to Jesus on a mission of rejection. \u00a0My current focus is <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+11:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mary<\/a>, the sister of <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Luke+10:38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martha<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+12:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lazarus<\/a>.\u00a0 She comforted Him in a way the apostles could not.<\/p>\n<p><em>She has kept it for the day of my burial<\/em>,<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a> Jesus said of the <em>three quarters of a pound of expensive aromatic oil from pure nard<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> she had \u201cwasted\u201d on his feet. \u00a0She had <em>sat at the Lord\u2019s feet and listened to what he said<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/23\/the-righteousness-of-god\/#_discount\">apparently<\/a> believed Him while the eleven (all twelve, in fact) were still full of their own understanding, hoping for (or <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+11:48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fearing<\/a>) the overthrow of the Roman government and their own <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Acts+1:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">domination<\/a> of the world.\u00a0 Taking Jesus at his word is still a great comfort in a world full of rejection as He <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+12:32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">draws all<\/a> to Himself.<\/p>\n<p><em>They belonged to you <\/em>(KJV: <em>thine they were<\/em>), Jesus\u2019 prayer continued.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to speculate too much about this beyond Jesus\u2019 own words: <em>No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Most <a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/john\/17-6.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">translators<\/a> have understood the next clause \u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03bf\u1f76 \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u1f14\u03b4\u03c9\u03ba\u03b1\u03c2 as a reiteration of people the Father gave to Jesus.\u00a0 But consider the following table:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td me&#8230;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Here it sounds reciprocal: the Father also gave Jesus to them.\u00a0 But I admit it is possible, probably likely, that this is just King James\u2019 English for a reiteration of the Father gave them to Jesus.\u00a0 <em>You gave them to Me<\/em>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+17%3A6&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NKJV<\/a> reads. \u00a0The Greek word <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03ba\u1f00\u03b3\u03ce\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03bf\u1f76<\/a> (<em>and me<\/em>, <em>me also<\/em>) is a dative pronoun according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kag.html#kagw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#moi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-dictionary-3\/#_\u03bc\u03bf\u03af\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> (<em>me<\/em>) in the phrase <em>you gave me out of the world<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/nouns1.htm#DATIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dative Case<\/a><\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em>The dative is the case of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/terms.htm#IO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">indirect object<\/a>, or may also indicate the\u00a0means\u00a0by which something is done. The dative case also has a wide variety of uses, with the root idea being that of &#8220;personal interest&#8221; or &#8220;reference&#8221;. It is used most often in one of three general categories:\u00a0<\/em>Indirect object<em>,\u00a0<\/em>Instrument\u00a0<em>(means), or\u00a0<\/em>Location<em>. Most commonly it is used as the indirect object of a sentence. It may also indicate the means by which something is done or accomplished. Used as a dative of location, it can show the &#8220;place&#8221;, &#8220;time&#8221;, or &#8220;sphere&#8221; in which something may happen.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>For example: (<\/em>Indirect object<em>): &#8220;Jesus said\u00a0<\/em>to them<em>&#8220;, or &#8220;he will give the Holy Spirit\u00a0<\/em>to those\u00a0<em>who ask&#8221; (Luke 11:13).\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>(<\/em>Instrument\u00a0<em>or\u00a0<\/em>Means<em>): &#8220;Be anxious for nothing, but in everything\u00a0by (<\/em>by means of<em>) prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God&#8221; (Philippians 4:6). In this sentence, there is a single Greek word translated into the phrase &#8220;by prayer&#8221; showing the means by which to let our requests be made known to God.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>(<\/em>Location<em>): &#8220;&#8230; and\u00a0<\/em>on the third day\u00a0<em>He will be raised up&#8221; (Matt 20:19). The phrase &#8220;the third day&#8221; is in the dative case, showing the time in which Jesus will be raised. In this sentence, there is no Greek word present that is translated into the English word &#8220;on&#8221;; it is added to show the meaning of the dative of location.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Greek word <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2\">\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> (<em>them<\/em>) is an <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aut.html#autous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accusative<\/a> pronoun as <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ou.html#ous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/greek-concordance\/#_\u1f45\u03c2\">\u03bf\u1f53\u03c2<\/a> the untranslated relative pronoun which precedes <em>you gave<\/em> in the prior phrase:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/nouns1.htm#ACCUSATIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Accusative Case<\/a><\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em>The accusative case is the case of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/terms.htm#DO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">direct object<\/a>, receiving the action of the\u00a0verb. Like the other cases, the accusative has a wide variety of uses, but its main function is as the direct object of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/terms.htm#TRANSITIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transitive verb<\/a>. The direct object will most often be in the accusative case.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>For example: &#8220;As newborn babes, long for the guiless\u00a0<\/em>milk\u00a0<em>of the word&#8221; (1 Peter 2:2). The word &#8220;milk&#8221; is in the accusative case and is functioning as the direct object of the transitive verb &#8220;long for&#8221; (or &#8220;desire&#8221;).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The only reason I want this giving to be reciprocal is to make it clearer that God the Father gave them Jesus and thus <em>they have <\/em>kept<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> his<em> word<\/em>, rather than too appear as if they obeyed his word so God the Father gave them to Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><em>Now they understand<\/em>, Jesus\u2019 continued, <em>that everything you have given me comes from you<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In other words, Jesus relied on his Father\u2019s supply, not his own godliness. \u00a0And those who had been given to Him knew (\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd, a form of <a noreferrer\">perfect tense<\/a>: \u201cThe basic thought of the perfect tense is that the progress of an action has been completed and the results of the action are continuing on, in full effect. \u00a0In other words, the progress of the action has reached its culmination and the finished results are now in existence.\u201d<a didn\u2019t utilize his own godliness, but trusted the Holy Spirit that descended\u00a0<em>like a dove from heaven, and\u2026remained on him<\/em>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/11\/23\/the-righteousness-of-god\/#_ftn11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup> Otherwise, Jesus\u2019 invitation and command,\u00a0<em><a from the Holy Spirit that descended\u00a0<em>like a dove from heaven, and\u2026remained on him<\/em>.<sup><a his command and invitation,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/quicksearch\/?search=+jesus+said+follow+me&amp;searchtype=all&amp;version1=31&amp;spanbegin=1&amp;spanend=73\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Follow me<\/a><\/em>, would be meaningless to sinful human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I acknowledged that my axiom in the beginning was little more than a confidence that \u201cJesus wasn\u2019t commanding us to follow Him somewhere we couldn\u2019t go\u2026Over time,\u201d I confessed, \u201cmy \u2018axiom\u2019 has come to mean so much more: When I am anything less than Christlike I no longer think: \u2018Oh, He is God and I am not.\u2019\u00a0 Instead, I know that I am living\u00a0<em>according to the flesh<\/em>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+8:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Romans 8:5-11<\/a>), that I\u2019ve\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Galatians+5:4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fallen away from grace<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 One would think I would know better by now but apparently I do not.\u00a0 It alerts me that it is time to stop relying on myself and get back to trusting Jesus, relying on his Spirit.\u00a0 But that weight deserves something weightier than an axiom.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But when did it become axiomatic?\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t axiomatic when I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/08\/05\/my-deeds-part-1\/#_turn\">turned again<\/a> to obey his rules in my own strength.<\/p>\n<p>I asked a friend I knew from church to sing this prayer as a demo after I had set it to music.\u00a0 It was beyond his vocal ability.\u00a0 Twice in the piece Jesus strikes a dissonant pedal tone until the rest of the music resolves and conforms to that note.\u00a0 My friend recommended a better trained singer, a younger man nearer my age.\u00a0 And he did this without criticizing my <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/08\/05\/my-deeds-part-1\/#_turn\">living arrangements<\/a> or commenting on my unworthiness to write an opera about Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>As this younger more skilful singer and I rehearsed we talked.\u00a0 I acknowledged the trouble I was having not sinning.\u00a0 He said that whatever was too difficult for him became easy when he \u201cturned it over to the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 It was apparent to me that he was describing actual experience, but I failed to ask what he meant by turning it over to the Lord. \u00a0I assumed he meant prayer.\u00a0 When I prayed for Jesus\u2019 help to overcome my sin I got nothing.\u00a0 (Or I got everything one reads about in these essays.) \u00a0At the time I assumed I wasn\u2019t holy enough to merit God\u2019s help.<\/p>\n<p>So I strove with all my might to make myself holy enough to earn his blessing, by which I meant becoming a famous (and hopefully rich) composer.\u00a0 I clearly didn\u2019t grasp that since Jesus is holy everyone who abides (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/John+15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 15:1-8<\/a>) in Him is holy (<a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/#!bible\/Romans+11:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Romans 11:16-24<\/a>).\u00a0 I saw my task as one of becoming holy rather than one of allowing Jesus\u2019 holiness to shine through me; namely, the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control that is the fruit of his Holy Spirit.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And I didn\u2019t understand that Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>In my ignorance I attempted to use Him as my personal <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daemon_(classical_mythology)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">demon<\/a> to achieve my own purposes.\u00a0 I was a lot like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_NcD2k_QmgQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikolai<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adam_Brody\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Brody<\/a>), the lead singer of the band Low Shoulder, in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jason_Reitman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Reitman\u2019s<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diablo_Cody\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diablo Cody\u2019s<\/a> movie <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jennifer%27s_Body\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jennifer\u2019s Body<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cDo you know how hard it is to make it as an indie band these days?\u201d he asked Jennifer (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Megan_Fox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Megan Fox<\/a>).\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s so many of us, and we\u2019re all so cute, and it\u2019s like, if you don\u2019t get on Letterman or some retarded soundtrack, you\u2019re screwed, okay?\u00a0 Satan is our only hope.\u00a0 We\u2019re in league with the beast now, and we have to make a really big impression on him.\u00a0 And to do that, we\u2019re going to have to butcher you and bleed you.\u201d\u00a0 And he does.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, I tried to make an impression on Jesus by attempting to obey his laws in my own strength, laws that included not butchering or bleeding young women.\u00a0 So what would I say to myself now about overcoming sin by turning it over to the Lord?<\/p>\n<p>It was a bit like being caught in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jUBrovExQQU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Devil\u2019s Snare<\/a> from the movie <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harry_Potter_and_the_Philosopher%27s_Stone_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harry Potter and the Sorcerer\u2019s Stone<\/a>.\u00a0 Hermione (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emma_Watson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emma Watson<\/a>), who \u201cpays attention in Herbology\u201d at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry, recognizes the plant and knows how to escape it.\u00a0 \u201cStop moving, both of you,\u201d she yells to Ron (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rupert_Grint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rupert Grint<\/a>) and Harry (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daniel_Radcliffe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Radcliffe<\/a>).\u00a0 \u201cYou have to relax.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t, it will only kill you faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>For when we were in the flesh<\/em>, (as opposed to being led by the Holy Spirit) Paul wrote believers in Rome, <em>the sinful desires, aroused by the law, were active in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. \u00a0But now we have been released from the law, because we have died to what controlled us, so that we may serve in the new life of the Spirit and not under the old written code<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 My striving to obey rules only strengthened sin\u2019s hold on me: <em>the power of sin is the law<\/em>.<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/06\/26\/to-make-holy-part-5\/#_ftn20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Rather than living in the flesh, striving to obey laws, I should have given more heed to Paul\u2019s explanation: <em>So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you could be joined to another, to the one who was raised from the dead, to bear fruit to God<\/em>.<a
